Aztecs battle for a solid win over the Rainbow Wahine

February 18, 2019 (San Diego) - San Diego State women's tennis earned a hard-fought victory Monday over Hawai’i, 5-2. The Aztecs captured a win in doubles and went on to swipe four matches in singles action.

The Aztecs went into Monday’s dual with great energy in doubles play, capturing their seventh point of the season against Hawai’i. Freshmen Agustina Rimoldi Godoy and Aesha Patel let a 6-2 decision slip away against Michelle Pits and Alzbeta Houbova on the third court, but sophomore Nnena Nadozie and freshman Alicia Melosch strung together a 7-5 win over Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma in the top seed. The doubles decision came down to senior Jenny Moinard and junior Mia Smith on court two, where the pair came out on top in their seven-point tie break with a 7-6 (3) finish over Maayan Sela and Nikola Dolakova.

SDSU held onto much of its momentum from the doubles win going into singles play, but Moinard wasn’t able to come back against Melounova in the top seed, dropping a 6-3, 6-1 decision. Freshman Abbie Mulbarger battled for a 6-4, 6-3 win over Resma in the fifth seed, while Nadozie finished off Dolakova 6-2, 6-3, on court three to boost the Aztecs’ point total to three.

On court two, freshman Shakhnoza Khatamova fought through three sets but couldn’t put away Sela, falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the matchup, but Melosch completed her three-set match at 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (1) over Pits to clinch the win for the Aztecs. With Rimoldi Godoy remaining on court six, the freshman captured a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 decision against Houbova to wrap up the dual.

THE NOTE

SDSU picks up its seventh doubles point of the season in its win over Hawai’i.

The 6-3 Aztecs get set to play at USD on Saturday, Feb. 23 in an 11 a.m. match.
