November 12, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team hosted the final day of the SDSU Fall Classic II on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs finished off play with seven total wins on the day with two victories in doubles matches and five in singles action.

In doubles play, sophomore Berta Acero and freshman Abbie Mulbarger faced off against Saltzen/Bacharach of Cal Poly in the red consolation draw, downing the Mustangs 6-2, while seniors Jana Buth and Paola Diaz were served a tough 6-1 loss in the black championship match against B. Turley/Pletcher of Utah.

To avoid team play in the championship, sophomore Mia Smith and junior Jenny Moinard closed out the blue draw against Anderson/Kukaras (USD) with a 6-2 victory, but freshman Nnena Nadozie and junior Magda Aubets were unable to pass Soares/Medina (LU), falling 6-2 in their championship match.

In singles action, Buth bounced back following her doubles loss for a sweet 6-1, 6-4 victory over Daniela Morales (USD) in the red championship draw, but her doubles partner Diaz was unable to overcome Liberty’s Ashley Bongart after three sets, dropping a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 match.

The Scarlet and Black split in the championship matches of the black draw as Mulbarger dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to USD’s Carolin Nonnenmacher, but teammate Smith was able to edge out Rebekah Anderson (LU) 6-4, 7-5 to capture her third singles victory this weekend. Aubets was the only Aztec to play in the silver draw and put up a fight against Elizabeth Barnickel (AFA), but was ultimately unable to walk away with a win, falling 6-1, 7-5.

SDSU finished things off with a trio of wins, as Acero maintained a flawless singles record for the tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over AFA’s Camryn Deames in the round robin draw. Moinard also finished the weekend with no singles losses, downing Katharina Kukaras (USD) 7-5, 6-2 in the championship match of the gold bracket. The last Aztec off the courts was Nadozie, who topped Utah’s Victoria Robertson 6-3, 6-2 in the gold consolation final.

With fall action wrapped up, the Aztecs will continue to prepare for their regular season debut in spring of 2018. The team is set to host UC Riverside on Jan. 21, 2018 at noon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
