SDSU won three of four singles matches on Sunday to finish the ITA Southwest Regional Championships

October 22, 2023 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women’s tennis team finished up the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Sunday at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Aztecs played four singles matches and two doubles matches. Continuing their singles success from earlier in the tournament, they won three of the singles matches and sent the fourth one to a third set tiebreaker.

Zoe Olmos faced USC’s Isabelle Lee. The match was close, but Olmos ended up on top in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.

Looking to build off yesterday’s singles win, Myah Petchey went up against Natalie Duffy, of Cal State Fullerton. Petchey claimed an early lead thanks to a 6-4 first set victory but was blanked 6-0 in the second. She fought to win 10-6 in the deciding tiebreaker.

In her singles match, Andreea Velcea drew Hawai’i’s Joelle Lanz. Velcea cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Rainbow Wahine.

A transfer from North Texas, Gloria Alogo went up against Hawai’i’s Ana Vilcek. Alogo forced a tiebreaker in the first set but fell just short, 7-6 (7-5). She bounced back to take the second 6-3 to send the match to a third set tiebreaker but ran out of steam, falling 10-5.

In doubles, Velcea partnered with Andjela Skrobonja. The duo opposed Arizona’s Reece Carter and Martyna Ostrzygalo but were bested 6-1.

In the other doubles match, Alogo and Olmos played together against Hawai’i’s Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova. Like the other Aztec doubles pair, they were downed 6-1.

San Diego State concludes its fall slate with the SDSU Fall Classic II at the Aztec Tennis Center from Friday, Nov. 3, through Sunday, Nov. 5.
