April 13, 2023 (San Diego) -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department is holding a community engagement meeting about military equipment on Monday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the County Operations Center (5520 Overland Ave., San Diego).

Sheriff’s representatives will answer questions, as well as listen to feedback and concerns regarding the Sheriff's Department's 2022 annual military equipment report and the Sheriff's Department's funding, acquisition, or use of military equipment.

AB-481 became state law in January 2022. It was passed to increase transparency and accountability for the funding, acquisition and use of military equipment used by state and local law enforcement agencies.

It requires law enforcement agencies to post an annual military equipment report detailing specific information, including inventory, cost and usage for the previous year.

As mandated, the Sheriff's Department submitted a 2022 report of existing inventory to the County Board of Supervisors on April 4, 2023. The County Board of Supervisors approved the equipment report on April 4, 2023.

The law also requires posting of the report on the agency's website and holding a public meeting.

“We are committed to transparency, public trust, community partnerships and compliance with the law. To ensure your voice is heard, we urge the community to take the opportunity to speak on this issue,” a press release states.
