October 16, 2015 (La Mesa) – A woman who recently moved into a rental home at 7000 Colony Drive in La Mesa with her children got a big surprise on Saturday. Walking out of the family’s bedroom, she found a huge snake in the kitchen.

The startled mother called 9-1-1 and barricaded herself in the bedroom with her children while waiting for help to arrive. Heartland Fire & Rescue in La Mesa, along with La Mesa Police and the El Cajon Animal Control soon came to the rescue.

Firefighters took control of the reptile, an 8-foot Columbian Red Tail Boa, and handed it over to El Cajon Animal Control.  Due to its size, Animal Control contacted Pet Kingdom at 3191 Sports Arena Boulevard in San Diego and they agreed to take the snake.

According to the Pet Kingdom's reptile manager, the Boa is female and about 8 years old.  It is currently quarantined to make sure it's healthy, and once cleared, will be available for sale.

“The landlord stated that the previous renters mentioned something about a lost snake but didn't seem concerned,” said Monica Zech, public information officer with Heartland Fire & Rescue.
