February 19, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Heavy snowfall is making travel hazardous on East County roadways in mountain areas, resulting in numerous accidents and traffic delays tonight.

“The Cuyamaca area has received between 6 to 8 inches of snow and Mt. Laguna more than that,” Cal Fire’s Mike Mohler informed ECM in an e-mail. He advised people to avoid visiting these areas unless prepared.

Chains are required on the Sunrise Highway on Mount Laguna. Snowfall is reported on I-8 in Pine Valley east to the Kitchen Creek area. There is also snow on Tecate Peak.

A vehicle has gone over the side of Highway 79 just south of Cuyamaca a short time ago. Earlier this evening, a multi-car pile-up occurred on I-8 at Pine Valley.
