March 17, 2012 (San Diego’s East County ) – The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for East County’s mountain areas, where snowfall could dip as low as 2500 feet by tomorrow night.   Higher peaks could have snow levels of two feet or more.

Areas likely to receive snow include Boulevared, Campo, Cuyamaca, Descanso, Julian, Morena Village, Mount Laguna, Pine Valley, Ranchita, Santa Ysabel, and Warner Springs.  Travel may be impacted along Interstate 8 through the mountains.

Precipitation is expected to increase throughout the afternoon today and this evening, diminishing Sunday. Visibility will be near zero at times in the snow. In addition, a wind warning has been issued for ridge tops and desert slopes, where west winds of 25-35 mph and gusts up to 75 mph are forecast.

If you are traveling in the mountain areas during the storm, be prepared for winter weather conditions and possible road closures. Carry chains, extra food and water, the National Weather Service advises.
