LIGHTING STRIKE CAUSES POWER OUTAGE IN LAKESIDE

September 30, 2010 (Lakeside) – Lightning struck a transformer on a power pole on Main Street in Lakeside, causing a power outage. Moments later, a second strike ignited a palm tree in the area, an eyewitness has told East County Magazine. Power is now out to about 2,000 customers in Lakeside.

MISSING WOMAN IN BONITA

 

September 29, 2010 (Bonita) – Last night at about 9:05 p.m. Christina Green left on foot, without her shoes, from the 2900 Block Sylvia Street Bonita. The missing person is at risk, and her mindset fluctuates from that of a five-year-old child to her current age of 30, San Diego's Sheriff Department reports. She has disappeared three times in the last year, and the last time she was located on Briarwood Road, Bonita.

September 28, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) –San Diego’s inland areas sweltered yesterday, with record temperatures in some areas. The mercury hit 112 in San Pasqual, 111 in Santee, 110 in Rancho Bernardo and Poway, 109 in El Cajon, 108 in Borrego, 106 in La Mesa, and 104 in Alpine.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook, warning of a chance of thunderstorms and lightning strikes Tuesday through Friday, with chances higher in the mountain areas.  Temperatures, however, are predicted to be cooler.

CANDIDATES FOR GOVERNOR FACE OFF IN DEBATE: BROWN VS. WHITMAN TUESDAY AT 6 P.M.


September 27, 2010 (San Diego) – The first of three televised debates between California gubernatorial candidates Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman will be aired Tuesday night at 6 p.m. on Channel 7/39 KNSD locally.

 

Whitman, former CEO of E-Bay, has spent over $119 million of her own money, breaking the nation’s record for most funds poured into a race by any candidate. Brown, California's former Governor and current Attorney General, has relied on grassroots support but has been outspent by his wealthy opponent.

 

Now voters will have an opportunity to hear directly from both candidates—without the filtering of political advisors or scripted TV ads. The Sacramento Bee has provided a pre-debate analysis of each candidate’s strengths and weaknesses.

BOMB THREAT PUTS STEELE CANYON HIGH SCHOOL IN LOCKDOWN

 

Updated 1:15 p.m. - The package has been determined to contain party supplies, Sheriff's officials have told ECM news partner 10 News.  Sheriff's representative Jan Caldwell says it is too early to determine if this is related to the pipe bomb that injured Connie Hoagland in Rancho San Diego or the pipe bomb left in the family's Rolando neighborhood earlier this month.

September 27, 2010 (Rancho San Diego) - Steele Canyon High School has been placed in lockdown due to a suspicious package delivered this morning, ECM has learned.  The package was delivered via Federal Express.  According to 10 News and an ECM source close to the investigation, the package was addressed to a child of Connie Hoagland, the woman injured in last week's pipe bomb explosion outside a Rancho San Diego daycare center where she worked.

CORONER RULES SHOOTING DEATH A SUICIDE; BODY FOUND INSIDE BURNED HOME

September 29, 2010 (Poway) – Firefighters battling a fire at the home of Valentine Derkach in Poway on September 23rd found his body inside the residence. Following an autopsy, the San Diego County Coroner has concluded that gunshot wounds to Derkach’s head and chest were self-inflicted and ruled the death a suicide.

TRUCK ACCIDENT SHUTS DOWN HIGHWAY 67

September 27, 2010 (Poway) – All lanes of Highway 67 are now shut down due to a rollover accident involving a dumptruck and three vehicles. A SigAlert has been issued. According to the SigAlert, CHP is turning traffic around at Mt. Woodson and Archie Moore. Northbound lanes are shut down at Poway Road as of 9:01 a.m. Northbound motorists are advised to use Poway Road as an alternate route. Southbound traffic is being diverted onto Archie Moore to Highland Valley.

FIRES IN MEXICO

 

Update 4:30 p.m. The Mexico fire has crossed the border into the U.S. and has burned about a half acre. CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire Authority has moved resources to the Tecate point of entry. Air Attack 330 is now equipped with a camera and downlink system that the ground incident commander can view real time to see how the fire is burning across the border. “This is the first Air Attack to have this system and it has proved itself as a major tool in the firefighting arsenal,” Cal Fire’s Mike Mohler said. Smoke is visible across a broad swath of East County.

September 26, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) 8:30 a.m. – Three fires in Mexico that began yesterday are generating smoke visible from East County. “We are monitoring them and we have a lookout out there.,” Cal Fire spokesman Mike Mohler told East County Magazine this morning. The U.S. Forest Service is also keeping watch, he added.

DISABLED VETERANS' PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION BILL SIGNED BY GOVERNOR

September 24, 2010 (Sacramento) --Assemblymember Marty Block (D-Lemon Grove) announced that his AB 2314 has been signed by the Governor. A bipartisan measure overwhelmingly approved by the Legislature, this legislation makes it easier for disabled veterans to receive a special property tax exemption available to them by extending the time frame for filing a claim.

ELDERLY WOMAN KILLED IN RANCHO BERNARDO ACCIDENT

 

September 24, 2010 (Rancho Bernardo) – An 82-year-old driver crossed four lanes on Rancho Bernardo Road after leaving a shopping center shortly before noon yesterday, landing in a drainage ditch. According to San Diego Police, the woman appeared to have a medical issue.

CAR EXPLOSION VICTIM IDENTIFIED; AREA REMAINS ON LOCKDOWN

September 23, 2010 (10:15 p.m.) – Connie Hoagland, a day care worker and wife of Larry Hoagland,, is the woman injured in tonight’s car explosion in Rancho San Diego, according to an e-mail sent by Pastor Jim Garlow of Skyline Church. “Connie was rushed to an area burn center and is going into the operating room,” he wrote at 7 p.m.

“Based on reports we have heard at this time, both legs are broken and her left foot has injuries as well.” Her injuries are not life threatening, he said, then asked for prayers for the Hoaglands, both parishioners at Skyline.

"AGGRESSIVE DOG” SHOT IN LAKESIDE, BY SHERIFF DEPUTY

 

September 20, 2010 (Lakeside) – A San Diego Sheriff’’s deputy shot a 100-pound dog that reportedly charged at him, growling with teeth bared. The shooting occurred on a driveway of a residence across the street from Lakeview Elementary School at 7:40 a.m., about an hour before classes began.

September 16, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) 1:00 p.m.– A white van implicated in the assault on a teen jogger in Blossom Valley on September 5th may have been involved in multiple stalkings of women in East County neighborhoods during the past couple of weeks. Other women have reported that they were stalked by a white van in the Cottonwood, Monarch Ridge and Rancho San Diego areas, East County Magazine has learned.

6 TEENS HOSPITALIZED AFTER ROLLOVER ACCIDENT IN PINE VALLEY

September 15, 2010 (Pine Valley) – An under-age teen driver took his grandmother’s Chevy Tahoe without permission, then picked up several friends at Mountain Empire in Pine Valley, ECM news partner 10 News reports. The joy ride ended tragically. Traveling at a high rate of speed, the driver missed a curve and the vehicle rolled over three times, according to the California Highway Patrol.

I-8 LANE & RAMP CLOSURES ANNOUNCED FOR EAST COUNTY

 

September 14, 2010 (San Diego's East County)--Motorists can expect lane and ramp closures along east and westbound Interstate 8 from the Viejas Creek Bridge in Alpine to the Horsethief Creek undercrossing Sundays through Thursdays between 7 p.m.and 5 a.m., beginning tonight and continuing through mid November. The on- and off-ramps at Willow Road and State Route-79 (Japatul Road) will also be subject to closure, but will not be closed at the same time.

DOG SHOT BY DEPUTY AFTER ATTACK IN CAMPO

 

September 14, 2010 (Campo) 12:35 p.m. Updated September 16th – A San Diego Sheriff’s deputy was attacked by a pit bull at 30031 Quail Road in Campo, sustaining moderate injuries. The deputy shot the dog in self defense, according to the Sheriff's Department.The deputy was attempting to serve a warrant on a juvenile when the dog attacked and bit his arm. The officer was knocked to the ground and fired one shot, striking the dog in the mouth.

MOTORCYCLIST INJURED AFTER HITTING TRUCK

 

September 14, 2010 (Kensington) – A motorcyclist rear-ended a truck on Fairmont Avenue in Kensington yesterday afternoon, then slid 100 yards. The 40-year-old driver of the motorcycled suffered serious injuries including a brain bleed. According to San Diego Police, the man was intoxicated and is expected to face drunk driving charges.

September 13, 2010 (City Heights) –Robert Michael Clampitt, 48, of City Heights was found submerged and unresponsive after failing to return from a diving excursion. Clampitt was among 14 patrons aboard a Waterhouse Charter when he made a solo dive at the site of the Yukon wreckage, the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office reports.

RAMONA CYCLIST IN FATAL ACCIDENT IDENTIFIED; DRIVER ARRESTED

September 13, 2010 (Ramona) – David Bruce Menea, 54, was struck and killed on Main Street Saturday night while illegally crossing the road, CHP reports. He was struck by a 4-Runner SUV, which went on to strike a parked Volkswagen, pushing the VW into Mike’s Liquor Store. Three other people were injured from the collision and flying glass.

ECM news partner Channel 10 News has dramatic video of the crash viewed from inside and outside the store, as well as an interview with eyewitness Terri Linnell. Linnell, who ran for Congress on a T.E.A. party platform during the June primary, tried to assist the fatally wounded bicyclist. “He died in my arms,” she told 10 news.
