March 5, 2012 (San Diego)--It was with these sentiments that I joined so many other authors at this 46th Annual Local Authors Exhibit on February 3, 2012, many of whom have been profiled in the East County Magazine. I visited with such illustrious writers and authors as Joshua Graham, Linda Loegel, Anat Tour, Sam Warren and Zohreh Ghahremani.
March 5, 2012 (San Diego) -- Cleveland National Forest officials will submit a cooperative grant application to the California Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division for 2011/2012 "Green Sticker" grants. Beginning March 5, 2012, the application can be viewed by clicking on the "Grants" tab on the California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation website at http://www.ohv.parks.ca.gov. Comments on the application must be received by April 2, 2012.
February 29, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)--The US Ninth Circuit Court has invalidated an unpopular U.S. Forest Service Program called the “Adventure Pass”. This scam charged U.S. citizens to drive, park, or hike in their own public lands and fined them if they did not buy an “Adventure Pass.”
Four hikers in Arizona challenged the Mount Lemmon Pass program and the court issued a scathing criticism of the double taxation of the Adventure Pass.
March 4, 2012 (Washington D.C)--FluMist Quadrivalent, a vaccine to prevent seasonal influenza in people ages 2 years through 49 years, has been approved today by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). FluMist Quadrivalent is the first influenza vaccine to contain four strains of the influenza virus, two influenza A strains and two influenza B strains.
Like the already approved FluMist (trivalent), the quadrivalent vaccine contains weakened forms of the virus strains and is administered as a spray into the nose.
March 4, 2012 (Jacumba) --On February 14, U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Boulevard Station collaborated with San Diego Sector Air Mobile Unit to conduct anti-smuggling operations in Jacumba.
At approximately 2:00 p.m., agents observed a suspicious vehicle traveling along Old Highway 80. Agents stopped the vehicle and questioned the driver and occupants. A field investigation revealed that both subjects were United States citizens in the area attempting to smuggle illegal aliens.

March 3, 2012 (Jacumba) -- Members of the Boulevard Border Patrol Station Abatement Team (BLV SAT) executed a Federal Arrest Warrant on February 19 for the notorious alien smuggler Steven Virgin Zavala. Zavala, the last member of his family residing in the town of Jacumba, was the leader of Zavala Transnational Criminal Organization.
March 3, 2012 (Alpine) – On February 21 at the Alpine Fire District Board meeting, long-time Alpine Fire Protection District Board member Ron Fuller resigned his position due to health issues. The District is currently seeking interested individuals to fill out Mr. Fuller's term which runs through November of this year. Interested individuals must be at least 18 years of age, a resident of the District and a registered voter. Applications can be picked up at the Fire Station at 1364 Tavern Road or down loaded from the Districts website at: http://www.alpinefire.org. The AFPD Board will review all applications at its March 20 Board meeting.

Both teams shook hands before the San Diego State women’s basketball team rushed to midcourt to join the rejoicing mob that had formed.

March 2, 2012 (El Cajon) -- A man acting "irrationally" who refused to put down knives when asked was shot in the arm by an El Cajon Police Sergeant, Lt. J.D. Arvan reports. The incident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday in the area of Villa Crest and Pepper Hill, after police received calls reporting a suspicious person in the area. Callers believed he might be casing homes in the neighborhood.
New complex to offer students state-of-the-art facilities
March 2, 2012 (La Mesa)--Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) and Helix Charter High School officials celebrated the groundbreaking of the school’s new performing arts complex on Wednesday, Feb. 29. The 34,000-square-foot complex will feature a 410-seat theatre, a Black Box for theater in the round, dance studio, recital rooms, costume shop and scene shop for performing arts students. The renovations also include new digital music labs, and classrooms for band and choir students.
March 2, 2012 (Lemon Grove) -- Sheriffs from the Lemon Grove Substation responded to a call yesterday afternoon from a woman in the 7900 block of Mt. Vernon Street. The caller told the dispatcher that her son had a gun and was threatening to hurt himself. After making the call, the woman left the house with her adult daughter.
