A SMASHING SUCCESS: LEMON GROVE WINS FIREFIGHTERS DEMOLITION DERBY

June 17, 2012 (Lemon Grove)—It was a sweet victory for Lemon Grove Firefighters Saturday night, when driver Joe Lavigne climbed out of his smashed-up vehicle to claim his department’s trophy.  Lemon Grove entered two cars in the Firefighters’ Demolition Derby at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar—and both made it into the final round.

The Foundation is raising funds to support the Arts and enhance Technology instruction in the schools.

June 18, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Grossmont College women’s basketball coach Karen Caires will host a summer basketball camp for boys and girls, grades 1 through 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 25 to 28, at the Grossmont College gymnasium. Coach Caires’ camp, called C.A.M.P (Caring About Motivating People), is designed to teach the game of basketball to today’s youth, as well as incorporate valuable life skills, including hard work, determination, attitude and a passion to achieve.

3RD ANNUAL LAKESIDE RELAY FOR LIFE 2012 JUNE 9-10

May 18, 2012 (Lakeside) – The 3rd annual Lakeside Relay for Life will be held June 9-10. This is a 24 hour, free family fun event open to the public to raise funds and awareness for The American Cancer Society while having a great time together.

Teams of people camp out and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event, which represents the reality that cancer never sleeps and neither do we. By participating, you honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives we've lost to the disease, and raise money to help fight cancer in your community.

USA'S LAURA BENNETT RACES TO OLYMPIC BERTH AT ITU WORLD TRIATHLON SAN DIEGO

 
Boulder, Colo., standout places third to earn second straight Games appearance
 
May 13, 2012 (San Diego) --Laura Bennett claimed the third and final spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team with a third-place finish Friday at the inaugural ITU World Triathlon San Diego. Bennett (Boulder, Colo.) will head to her second straight Olympic Games in August thanks to a time of 2 hours, 11 seconds on the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10-kilometer run course throughout Mission Beach. She was fourth in Beijing in 2008.

STEPHEN WATSON OF EL CAJON WINS NCAA PACWEST DIV II MEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

May 7, 2012 (El Cajon) – Stephen Watson, a Christian High Grad, won the NCAA PacWest Div II Men’s Golf championship April 24.  He was honored with PacWest Co-Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and is a member of the All-Conference First Team.

Watson captured the individual title by recording a five-under-par 211.  On the final day of the tournament he carded his second 69 of the tournament, finishing (69-73-69) after entering the day in a four-way tie for second place. Watson wins the tournament in the Lancers' first season as a member of the conference. He was one of just two players to shoot under par in the final round.

16TH ANNUAL HAWAIIANAIRES POLICE GOLF TOURNAMENT MAY 11

May 5, 2012 (El Cajon) – The 16th Annual Hawaiianaires Golf Tournament is May 11 at the Cottonwood Rancho San Diego Golf Course, 3121 Willow Glen Road, El Cajon.  The event benefits the El Cajon Police Officers’ Memorial Fund is sponsored by the El Cajon Police Officers Association.

The entry fee is $120 per person and limited to the first 144 people.  Registration will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a 12:00 p.m. shotgun start.  Dinner will follow the tournament.  Tickets may be purchased by calling 619-442-9891.

Flowers, banner at Junior Seau Sports Complex in La Mesa pay tribute to football legend

May 2, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) –East County and San Diego leaders reacted with shock and sadness to news that former Chargers star Junior Seau, 43, was found dead at his Oceanside home today of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.  

A former resident of Mt. Helix and supporter of local charities, Seau also frequently visited the Junior Seau Sports Complex at La Mesita Park in La Mesa that was named in his honor.

“He was always here for us,” La Mesa Art Madrid said, La Mesa Today reported.  “He was part of the family in this town.”

The former is where USD senior first baseman Bryan Haar made a name for himself as one of best high school baseball players in San Diego County; the latter is where Haar is making a name for himself by helping lead the 19th-ranked college baseball team in the nation to what many hope is a berth in the College World Series.

April 10, 2012 (San Diego)--It may not have been the prettiest, but as they say in sports, “a win is a win.”

Behind two fourth-quarter goals by senior Leanne Ford, No. 9 SDSU defeated No. 19 Cal Baptist on Friday afternoon, April 6 at the Aztec Aquaplex. With the 4-2 win, the Aztecs improved to 18-9 on the season, while the Lancers fell to 17-8.

March 21, 2012 (San Diego)--It didn’t just rain, it poured. Yet, even the dreadful weather was not enough to stop the San Diego State women’s water polo team from earning an 11-5 victory over Bucknell University at the Aztec Invitational presented by Courtyard Marriott on Saturday morning, March 17 at the Aztec Aquaplex on the campus of SDSU.

The win improved SDSU’s record to 13-6, while the loss dropped Bucknell to 10-15 on the season.
