June 16, 2019 (San Diego's East County) - Here are this week's top headlines for East County alumni in baseball.

June 9

Grossmont High alum Ben Brault started for the Pittsburgh Pirates as he pitched 6.1 innings and gave up five hits, two runs (two earned), three walks and struck out five as the Bucs fell to the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2. 
 
Two East County ballplayers made headlines in San Diego as West Hills alum Steven Strasburg improves his record at 7-3 for the Washington Nationals as he pitched seven innings and gave up six hits, one run (one earned) and struck out six.  Former Vahalla Norseman Greg Garcia went 1 for 4 with a single.

ASC MEN BACK IN PLAYOFF CONTENTION AFTER STUNNING 6-0 VICTORY OVER CITY OF ANGELS FC

June 10, 2019 (San Diego) - This past Saturday night, Mission Bay Stadium was host to an epic match between ASC San Diego and NPSL newcomers City of Angels FC. It ended with a stunning 6-0 victory for ASC along with three very necessary points in conference standings. Throughout the 2019 season the same four teams (ASC, OCFC, FCAZ, FCGS)  have been battling for seat in the top three positions of the Southwest Conference. With only the smallest of margins separating them there is zero room for error in the few remaining weeks. The race for the NPSL postseason is at critical mass.

June 6, 2019 (Austin) - Aztec pole vaulter Bonnie Draxler earned the silver medal at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Austin, Texas Thursday evening. The senior from Wrightstown, Wisc. tied her own school record by clearing 14-09.50 (4.51m). This was the second time this year Draxler has finished as the NCAA runner-up, both times to an Arkansas vaulter.

June 6, 2019 (San Diego) - San Diego State, in conjunction with the Mountain West, has announced the women's basketball conference schedule for the 2019-20 season.

The conference format will remain the same with each team playing eight of the other 10 teams twice and playing two opponents once with games on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This season, the Aztecs will not play San Jose State at home and will not travel to play at Air Force. This is the seventh season the conference has been organized in this layout.

June 6, 2019 (San Diego) - San Diego State men’s basketball released the initial version of its Mountain West Conference schedule for the 2019-20 campaign on Thursday; the first phase in the 2019-20 schedule process. For the seventh consecutive year, the format will include 18-games (nine home and nine road games) with each team playing eight opponents twice (home-and-home) and two opponents once.  MW games begin on Dec. 4 and wrap up on Feb. 29.

June 6, 2019 (San Diego’s East County) – Former Grossmont Foothiller Joe Musgrove helped lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to victory as the starting pitcher.  He pitched eight innings and gave up five hits, three runs (three earned, one walk) and six strikeouts, moving his record to 4-6 for the season as the Pirates plundered the Atlanta Braves 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

May 29, 2019 (San Diego) - San Diego State has been selected to host the 2020 Mountain West Championships for the fifth time and the second time in the last three years, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

Tony Gwynn Stadium will host the conference's top four regular-season finishers in a double elimination tournament running from May 21-24, 2020. The Aztecs have previously hosted the event in 2001, 2010, 2011, and 2018.

May 28, 2019 (San Diego) -  ASC’s Marlene Avalos blasted in a 30-yard free kick in the 90th-minute in an attempt to equalize the match but came up short with a near miss.  Despite a dominant second half with the majority of ball possession, the home team was unable to find the back of the net and earn their first WPSL victory.

May 28, 2019 (San Diego) -  ASC San Diego continued their superb form with a shutout win Saturday, May 25th against Southwestern Conference opponents A.S. Los Angeles. The 3-0 victory bolstered ASC’s stats to 6 clean sheets on the season and a 6th win in their last 7 matches played. With just 4 matches remaining in the regular season, Saturday’s victory grants ASC 3 valuable points which pushes them further forward in their quest to see NPSL postseason play.

May 24, 2019 (Sacramento) - Bonnie Draxler qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships after finishing eighth in the pole vault Friday evening at the NCAA West Prelims in Sacramento, Calif.

Draxler cleared 14-02.00, which tied for the best height. This will be her fourth career appearance at the NCAA Championships (2nd outdoor). She was the national runner-up three months ago at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

May 24, 2019 (Reno) - The San Diego State baseball team fell to Nevada, 6-4, to finish the Mountain West Championships on Friday afternoon at Peccole Park. The Aztecs finish their season with a 32-25 record.

SDSU, which entered the game with a 19-6 record when scoring first, jumped out to a 4-1 lead in thanks to a 2-RBI single by Casey Schmitt in the first inning, a Jacob Maekawa run on a throwing error while stealing third in the fourth, and an Angelo Armenta single to left field scoring Matt Rudick in the fourth.

BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT IN LEMON GROVE JUNE 1 TO BENEFIT SCHOLARSHIPS HONORING TREVON HARRIS, 13-YEAR-OLD KILLED BY VEHICLE

May 24, 2019 (Lemon Grove) – Trevon Harris, 13, dreamed of becoming an NBA player and played basketball with the Young Bulls, a recreational team in Lemon Grove.  But on May 3, he slipped on gravel outside his home in Lemon Grove and fell into the path of a vehicle, suffering a fatal head injury.

On June 1st, the Lemon Grove Improvement Council and Coach Mark Horton will hold the first annual Trevon Harris 3-on-3 basketball tournament for players ages 10-14 at the Lemon Grove Rec Center, 3131 School Lane.  Teams are encouraged to sign up at Trevon-Harris.eventbrite.com. There will also be music, food, games and more.

“This charity event will memorialize Trevon who was taken too soon from his family and from our community,” says Teresa Rosiak-Proffit with the Lemon Grove Improvement Council. “The funds raised will allow us to award prizes to the players and we are going to set-up a scholarship/endowment fund so that we can help the youth of our community with the sports needs they may have. If a youth cannot afford to join in on a sport or needs sports equipment they can contact us and we will assist."

May 24, 2019 (Sacramento) - Sophomore Callista Fletcher advanced to the 100-meter dash quarterfinals of the NCAA West Prelims Thursday evening after finishing with the 13th best time (11.49). Nyjari McNeil (800m) and Maya Brosch (400m hurdles) also competed Thursday evening, but did not qualify for Friday’s quarterfinals.

May 24, 2019 (Reno) -  San Diego State suffered a 9-3 loss to UNLV in its first-round Mountain West Championships contest at Peccole Park on Thursday afternoon. SDSU, now 32-24 on the season, will face the loser of No. 1 seed Fresno State and No. 4 seed Nevada at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow in an elimination game.

May 20, 2019 (Riverside) - ASC San Diego took all three points on the road this past Sunday after securing a comfortable 2-0 victory against NPSL rivals, the Riverside Coras. ASC, who have now won 5 out of their last 6 matches, played with dominance of possession throughout most of the 90 minutes. From the start, ASC played with an organized approach to control the midfield, allowing for simple offensive distribution and positive build up play on the counter.

ASC WOMEN CREATE LATE CHANCES, BUT FALL AGAIN

May 20, 2019 (San Diego) - LA Galaxy SD’s near point-blank goal scored in the 65th minute proved to be the winner Saturday night in ASC San Diego Women’s second WPSL match of the 2019 season.

LA Galaxy SD were first on the board when a 30th minute cross in from the right wing found the LA Galaxy SD #10 streaking into the middle of the box to put the ball home for a 1-0 lead. Later, in stoppage time of the 1st half, an Anna Gomez Vila pass found Monica Navarro, near the top of the box, who fired a shot into the top right corner to make it 1-1 going into the break. Most of the first 45 minutes saw ASC San Diego on the front foot, but not many chances were created.
