March 28, 2021 (San Diego) - The San Diego women’s tennis team earned their first conference win of the 2021 season Sunday, topping the University of Nevada Wolf Pack 4-2 at Aztec Tennis Center.

For the third consecutive match and due to health and safety precautions, the Aztecs played with five student-athletes and were forced to forfeit their No. 3 doubles match and their No. 6 singles match.

With a 1-0 advantage in doubles play due to the Aztecs’ forfeit, the Wolf Pack took home the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court two as Cristina Moll Alles and Milka Genkova bested Nnena Nadozie and Abbie Mulbarger. On court one, the duo of Regina Pitts and Cécile Morin topped Anastasia Luneva and Carla Del Barrio, 6-3.

The Aztecs stormed back in singles play, earning wins on courts one through four to secure the dual-match victory. Pitts topped Luneva 6-2, 6-2 on court one while Nadozie fought back from a first-set loss to top Genkova 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. On court three, Morin earned a victory over Moll Alles 6-3, 6-3 and Mulbarger collected a 6-4, 6-4 win over Del Barrio.

THE STAT

With their doubles win on court one, Pitts and Morin are the lone Aztecs with flawless doubles record in conference play. Pitts, Morin, and Nadozie each have only one doubles loss on the 2021 season (through six matches).

THE QUOTE

“We earned a really good, hard-fought, well-deserved win today to start the conference season 1-1,” head coach Peter Mattera stated proudly. “We were playing short-handed once again, but my student-athletes showed a lot of heart and soul to pull the win out today against a good Nevada team. We are looking forward to getting back to full strength and carrying on with our conference season as we travel to Boise next weekend.”

UP NEXT

The Aztecs leave the friendly confines of Aztec Tennis Center for the first time in the 2021 season next weekend, traveling to Boise, Idaho for dual matches on April 2 and 3. The Scarlet and Black will take on Utah State in a neutral site match on April 2 and Boise State in a true away dual match on April 3. Doubles play for both matches is set to begin at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT.
