December 20, 2010 (Lake Morena) – Firefighters at the Lake Morena Fire Station heard an explosion at 8:45 p.m. last night. “They went outside and saw the house next door was on fire,” Cal-Fire Captain Mike Mohler told East County Magazine. Fire was through the roof, swiftly engulfing the small modular home.

Four engines, a rescue unit and a battalion chief were swiftly dispatched to the residence, located at the intersection of Sage and Oak, but were unable to save the home. “Firefighters did pull one dog out of the residence,” Mohler said. The dog, which had burned hair on its face, was transported to an animal hospital and survived, he added. A second dog ran off during the fire.

The owner was not at home when the fire began and the cause remains under investigation. “The Battalion Chief, Cal-Fire and law enforcement are on the scene investigating,” Mohler said this morning.

Explosion Of House In Lake Morena

My husband and I live right next to the house that caught fire, Sunday night. We have a little over 2 1/2 acres and we have horses and other animals. When that HUGE EXPLOSION blew, we were in the house watching television, and my husband ran out - seeing that our horses were totally distressed running around in their stalls/corrals. And, all of our other animals were upset with all the Flames shooting into the air, along with the flashing lights from the fire trucks.

The fire seemed to be very heavy at the back of the house, whereas the entire back porch/deck was burning, along with the entire house. The smoke was the worst to the back of this home, as all the smoke came filtering into our home, etc.

Knew that there were two large dogs, and I was so worried about them... Didn't know about the one dog getting burnt, but the other dog was hiding in the far corner of the yard, by the cedar fence... and was so FRIGHTENED. People tried to get it out, but all it wanted to do was stay there, in that corner of the yard - watching as the fire crew was there fighting the flames.

Very thankful for our Cal Fire crew, along with our Campo Fire Department crew.... they are FANTASTIC fire fighters, as they have been also so very great during the times of the fires we have had up here - during 2006, 2007 - and all of them.

Would really like to know more about what happened. And, would like to know if they located the owner, and what happened to the dogs.

Thank you,

Pat & Bill Holtwick
