The Spirit of a Winner: Guided Journal, by Marilyn D. Fitzgerald (M.D.F. Communications Inc., Matteson, Illinois, 2007, 201 pages.)

Book Review by Dennis Moore

“The life which is not examined is not worth living.” – Plato

November 24, 2019 (San Diego) - Having known Marilyn D. Fitzgerald, the author of this insightful book and spiritual guide, I feel honored to write the review of this book. Knowing her and spending time with her over the many years actually gives me the requisite vision and insight to share with others.

The Spirit of a Winner, written by this talented author and visionary, is actually a life-changing tool. It is a guided journal that will help give structure and meaning to your life, something that I for one sorely need. Fitzgerald states that this guided journal will assist you in tracking the important information you need to create an extraordinary life and body. She indicates that millions of people have formed the habit of journaling and enjoy the benefits of it, including Oprah Winfrey.

A particular passage in this book/journal resonates with me; “It is God’s will that we live healthy, happy, and prosperous lives. If your life does not reflect these experiences, then you need to find out what is going on inside your mind. Using this guided journal will help you gain insight to the causes of the effects that you are experiencing.”

Fitzgerald, a seasoned tri-athlete, competing in sports for over two decades, combines the discipline of this Spirit of a Winner: Guide Journal, for a healthy and wholesome body and mind, to go along with a sound spirit. Now the author wants to share these principles with the readers of this book.

The author, pictured here with the daughter of the late heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, specifically states in this well written book (Journal): “The journal is designed to help you become aware of the Spirit-Mind-Body connection. It is my hope that once you make this connection, you will create a wellness lifestyle. In order to make the connection, you have to track many aspects of your life that influence the connection. The first step in your journey toward developing a winning Spirit is knowing what defines the Spirit of a Winner. See the poem on the preceding page. Read it daily in the morning when you wake up and before bedtime – and whenever you feel like giving up on your journey to creating your desires and positive experiences. The second step is goal-setting. The word ‘goal’ is often-mentioned; however, less than eight percent of people set them. There are many reasons why. One reason is they are not clear on the purpose and how to set them. ‘Goal’ is defined as an aim, something that somebody wants to achieve.”

This journal by Fitzgerald is designed by her to be a 31-day tool to document on a daily basis your experiences and perceptions, such as; “What Have I Done Today To Make Someone Feel Proud?” and “Release……Things I Need To Release and Let Go!” This book teaches discipline and reflection, attributes that I and all readers of this book/journal can benefit from. Marilyn Fitzgerald is an inspiration. I admire her attitude and her spirit. I enjoyed the poem, and I plan on saying it every day, as she suggests. Where do you find these interesting people, Mr. Moore? I enjoyed the review.
