HELEN STODDARD, A POWERFUL WOMAN IN EAST COUNTY'S PAST

April 8, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) –April is Women’s History Month.   It’s an appropriate time to share a story about a remarkable woman from East County’s past. Helen Gerrells Stoddard, a former resident of La Mesa , Lemon Grove and Ramona, was a prominent leader in the fight to win women the right to vote,  as well as a leader efforts that led to La Mesa becoming a city. She even earned a place in history at the national political level.

LEMON GROVE ANNOUNCES FIRST ANNUAL PHOTO CONTEST

April 5, 2015 (Lemon Grove) – The City of Lemon Grove is calling on all photographers – amateurs, professionals, adults and youths—to enter the city’s first annual photo contest.  All photos must contain an image of a lemon or lemon related object (such as a blossom or tree) and be submitted by the April 30th deadline.

The application states:  “Lemon Grove is embedded with a rich history built around rows plentiful with citrus trees and lemon growing the town’s largest industry. Help us celebrate the culture of Lemon Grove by entering your best image based around the iconic symbol of the `lemon.’”

LEMON GROVE COUNCIL AGENDA FOR APRIL 7

 

April 5, 2015 (Lemon Grove) –The Lemon Grove Council will meet on Tuesday, April 7 at 6 p.m. in the Lemon Grove Community Center (3146 School Lane). 

This week, Council will consider  an agreement with San Diego Unified School District to house and staff a mass decontamination unit. Council will also review goals and priorities from its Strategic Planning workshop and hear a motion to reject all bids received on a sewer upsizing project.

RELAY FOR LIFE SET TO RUN IN LEMON GROVE MAY 16

April 5, 2015 (Lemon Grove) – The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is the world’s largest fundraising event to end cancer. The Lemon Grove Relay for Life event will be held on Sunday, May 16th starting at 9 a.m. at Lemon Grove Middle School, 7866 Lincoln Avenue.

This occasion unites communities around the world to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. The family-friendly event features food, entertainment, games and activities. Organized teams have members from their teams walk around the track during the entire 24 hours of the event, symbolizing that “cancer never sleeps.”

LEMON GROVE SCHOOL EMPLOYEE ARRESTED FOR CHILD ENDANGERMENT

March 28, 2015 (Lemon Grove) – An after-school assistant at Lemon Grove Academy was arrested Wednesday after she began acting bizarrely and barricaded herself in a classroom along with several children from 1st through 7th grade.

LEMON GROVE MURAL WINS AWARD FROM GOVERNOR BROWN

October 2, 2014 (Lemon Grove)—An elaborate five-panel mural depicting the history of Lemon Grove has been awarded the Governor’s Historic Preservation Award for 2014.  A letter from the Governor’s office sent to the Lemon Grove Historical Society, which commissioned the project, called it “an exceptional example of historic preservation efforts on behalf of California’s cultural heritage.”
