March 5, 2023 (Peoria, Ariz.) - Today, the Padres are back in Peoria hosting the Athletics.  Ken Waldichuk started for Oakland against Blake Snell getting his first start of the season.

Kevin Smith kicked things off with a solo homer for the As in the first, but Austin Nola saved the day in the home half of the first with a liner to right that scored Trent Grisham and we were tied at one after one.

Jose Azocar hit a sac fly to left in the second to score Rangel Ravelo and the Padres took a 2-1 lead after two.

With the bases loaded in the fourth, Esteury Ruiz walked, allowing Yohel Pozo to score from third, but thanks to an inning of blunders by the As in the bottom of the fourth (a bobbled ball at second and a missed catch at first), Azocar beat out a throw to first on a sac bunt that scored Ravelo and Jackson Merrill scored from third on a wild pitch, Grisham hit a sac fly to score Azocar and the Padres led 5-2 after four.

Merrill extended the lead in the fifth with a falling single to left that scored Preston Tucker.  Grisham hit a deep RBI single to right that scored Nola and Luis Liberato capped it off with a deep three-run bomb to left and the Padres piled on the runs to win 10-3 after the As tacked on one more run in the ninth.
