March 27, 2021 (San Diego) - The Aztec rowing team competed in the annual San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay Saturday morning.

The racing was contested over two 1,500-meter legs, going in opposite directions in the Sea World Channel. GPS was used to determine each boat’s best average time. The Aztecs rowed head-to-head against USD and competed against No. 18 USC virtually in the second varsity eight with the Trojans racing on their home waters in the Port of Los Angeles and facing different conditions than the Aztecs and Toreros.

The Aztecs’ first varsity eight jumped out to a lead and maintained it until the end of the first stretch when the Toreros pulled ahead using their inside position to their advantage. SDSU’s final time was 10:38.4 and USD’s was 10:26.4.

“It was a very positive improvement for our first varsity eight after last week’s competition at USC,” head coach Bill Zack said.

SDSU’s second varsity eight also had an early lead and consistently held an edge of a couple seats but it was determined that USD’s best average time (10:37.5) was faster than SDSU’s (11:23.8). No. 18 USC finished in 10:14.3.
