April 22, 2018 (Fresno) - The San Diego State softball team dropped the series finale at Fresno State by a 4-2 score Sunday afternoon at Margie Wright Diamond in Fresno, Calif. The Aztecs are now 14-28 on the season (5-10 in Mountain West play), while the Bulldogs are 29-16 overall and remain in first play in the league standings at 12-3.

SDSU had a 2-0 lead, but FS scored three runs in the fourth and tacked on a run in the sixth to capture the series.

The Aztecs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, when Shelby Thompson hit a one-out triple off the right-field wall in the top of the first inning and scored on a Katie Byrd double on the very next pitch. Kelsey Munoz followed with a single to put runners on the corners, but FS starting pitcher Danielle East struck out Taylor Stewart swinging and got Taylor Adams to ground out to end the inning.

San Diego State added to its lead in the fourth as Taylor Adams drew a four-pitch walk, stole second, moved to third on a groundout by Molly Sturdivant and scored one batter later on a Zaria Meshack single up the middle.

Fresno State, however, scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead of the game. Schuylar Broussard first was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. After Aztec reliever Alex Formby struck out Dominique Jackson looking, Kaitlyn Jennings singled to center field to score a pair of runs and take a 3-2 lead.

Sturdivant ripped a two-out double in the sixth and was replaced by Jordyn Fick, but Janina Jusay’s tweener in right-center field was tracked down nicely by Bulldog second baseman Miranda Rohleder to keep the score at 3-2.

FS added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with three consecutive two-out singles, the latter by Jennings which scored pinch runner Brooke Coates.

Byrd and Munoz each had two hits apiece for SDSU, while Sturdivant doubled and walked.

Formby (8-11) took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings of relief, striking out two. Marissa Moreno started for San Diego State and yielded two runs on three hits and two walks over 2 2/3 innings, while recording two strikeouts.
