March 26, 2021 (San Diego) - Chloe Frisch and Anna Toohey scored second half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and sent the San Diego State women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Fresno State on Friday night at the SDSU Sports Deck.

The Aztecs outshot Fresno State 6-5 in the first half and 14-9 for the game, but found themselves down 1-0 on Kassandra Ceja’s goal at the 15:22 mark. The goal would be just one of two shots from Fresno State (3-2-1) which would reach SDSU keeper Alexa Madueno’s line.

With San Diego State (5-1-0) down 1-0 heading into the second half the team began to apply the pressure to the Fresno State defense and saw the first result in the 64th minute.

Phoebe Leitch played a ball from the right side across the box. It went off a Bulldog defender right to Toohey who one-timed it into the belly of Fresno State keeper Briana O’Dell. O’Dell didn’t control the ball and Frisch pounced on it right at the six-yard box. She flipped it over the keeper, who was down on the ground, and past a defender for the equalizer at 63:20.

Just over two minutes later, at the 65:41 mark, Toohey got what would turn out to be the game winner.

Taylor Moorehead picked up a ball at midfield and played a perfect throughball to Toohey, who was racing down the left side.  Toohey ran right onto it and drove it into the box.  She stopped at 15 yards out, on the left side, let the defender who was with her overrun the play and then slotted a shot just inside the far post and past a diving O’Dell for a 2-1 Aztecs lead.

From there, San Diego State controlled the run of play. Madueno ended any hope for a Bulldogs comeback when she made a diving save in the 87th minute to secure the 2-1 victory.

Frisch led the offensive attack with five shots, two on frame and one goal, her fourth of the season.  Toohey took three shots, all on goal and had a goal, her third of the campaign, and an assist. Lauren Dicus attempted two shots and Jordan Girman, Kiera Utush, Leach and Moorehead all took one shot, with Moorehead getting an assist on Toohey’s goal.

Madueno earned her fifth win of the year, improving to 5-1-0, and had one save.

Ceja led Fresno State with three shots and the team’s lone goal. O’Dell (1-2-0) played the second half, made three saves, but gave up two goals and took the loss.
