LA MESA HONORS OUR VETERANS

 

 

June 1, 2011 (La Mesa) --On June 3rd at 10:00 a.m., La Mesa’s portion of Fletcher Parkway will be designated as "Veterans Memorial Parkway” during a festive ceremony to be held at EDCO Football Field at Parkway Middle School, 9009 Park Plaza Street. In honoring Veterans, the City has added an entry monument sign on the east side of La Mesa, a new vehicular sign on the parkway and modified the existing city entry monument sign at Baltimore and Fletcher Parkway. The project does not change the name of Fletcher Parkway, but adds signage along the roadway.

FAA, MARINES AND LOCAL VINTAGE AVIATORS APPROVE FLYOVERS FOR THE DEDICATION OF WALL OF HONOR

 

 

 

May 18, 2011 (Alpine) -- The FAA, US Marine Corp and local aviators have all approved flyovers to mark the dedication of the Veterans Wall of Honor, planned for May 30, 2011, at 1 p.m. on the grounds of the Alpine Community Center.

 

The ceremony is called "Mission Honored: Dream Achieved." It marks the dedication of the Wall of Honor, and unveil a tile with the name of Lt. John Flinn, our own Medal of Honor recipient whose name is the first to be placed on the Wall of Honor. Hundreds of other tiles will be mounted in honor of veterans who sacrificed to serve our country.

A Community Celebration for the Dedication of the Veterans Wall of Honor

 

 

May 18, 2011 (Alpine) -- Fernando Gonzalez volunteered to be the general contractor for the Veterans Wall of Honor, and couldn't be happier with the results. "This is a beautiful symbol of respect and honor for those who have sacrificed for our country in the armed services. The vision is perfect ,the commitment of the community is fantastic, and I am so proud to contribute a small part. It's my best project ever!"

The wall of honor will be dedicated on May 30, 2011 at the Alpine Community Center.

LA MESA TO HONOR VIETNAM WAR VETERANS APRIL 26

 

April 13, 2011 (La Mesa)-- La Mesa residents who are Vietnam War Veterans are invited to attend the La Mesa City Council meeting at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26th at the City Council Chambers, 8130 Allison Avenue.

 

The City Council will honor these military personnel for their service during the meeting as part of its ongoing effort to recognize local veterans. Last month, the Council recognized Korean War Veterans, in February the WWII Veterans, and in January the Council honored the Pearl Harbor Survivors for their valor.

REP. SUSAN DAVIS INTRODUCES BILL TO HELP VETERANS WITH COLLEGE EXPENSES

 

April 12, 2011 (Washington D.C.) – Congresswoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) introduced legislation to restore cuts made to education aid for veterans going to college. The Post 9/11 GI Bill Payment Restoration Act (H.R. 1451) would reinstate living expense stipends during school breaks.

 

“Our service members earned and deserve their educational benefits,” said Davis, a member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee. “We have a responsibility to keep these benefits worthy of their dedication and sacrifices to the nation.”

GIVE A HOMELESS PERSON IN SAN DIEGO A WARM SLEEPING BAG, A PONCHO AND A STUFF SACK FOR $35

March 27, 2011 (San Diego)  There are now about 4,000 homeless folks in San Diego County, with many of them located downtown on the streets. Many of them are the "newly homeless" and have nothing other than the clothes that they are wearing. The nights can be very cold and wet.

BLOCK BILL TO HELP WIDOWS & WIDOWERS OF DISABLED VETERANS PASSES KEY COMMITTEE

 

March 8, 2011 (Sacramento)-- Assemblymember Marty Block (D-Lemon Grove) announced today that his legislation to provide a tax exemption benefit to widows or widowers of disabled veterans has cleared the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee by a unanimous vote.

 

“AB 188 would correct an error that currently prevents surviving spouses of disabled veterans who move to assisted living facilities for health reasons from qualifying for a property tax exemption afforded to their spouse,” said Block, who represents the 78th Assembly District.

POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS STUDY FINDS HIGH RATE OF SUICIDAL THOUGHTS AMONG SOLDIERS WHO DON'T GET MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING


Shocking numbers could be even higher if veterans were included

 

January 25, 2011 – Results of a new study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry have found that 93 percent of soldiers contemplated suicide when they went without aggressive mental counseling in a controlled group.

 

Results of the study, conducted by the Army on 20,000 soldiers in Iraq, shows that 54 percent fewer soldiers contemplated suicide and the number of soldiers who needed to be sent home with mental health problems dropped by nearly 70 percent with more aggressive counseling in the field.

VETERANS FOR PEACE SEEKS HELP FOR HOMELESS

 

January 2, 2010 (San Diego) – As winter temperatures locally dip below freezing, San Diego Veterans For Peace is distributing sleeping bags and ponchos to the homeless.

“So far we have distributed 145 sets, and are seeking donations to continue,” said Ramona resident Dave Patterson, Veterans for Peace spokesman.  The group seeks donations of cash, sleeping bags and ponchos to help protect local veterans from winter storms and cold.  Last year, more than 60 homeless people died on the streets of San Diego, many from exposure to harsh winter weather.

MILITARY AND VETERANS: DEC. 3 IS DEADLINE TO SUBMIT RETROACTIVE STOP LOSS SPECIAL PAY CLAIMS

 

November 12, 2010 (San Diego) – Congressman Bob Filner wants to make sure all active duty and veterans who were forced to involuntarily extend their service know that the deadline to submit a claim for retroactive “Stop Loss” pay is approaching.

 

All claims must be submitted by December 3, 2010.

October 15, 2010 (Washington, D.C). – House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner (D-San Diego) announced yesterday that President Obama signed H.R. 3219 into law. The Veterans’ Benefits Act of 2010, authored by Filner, improves and modernizes certain benefits administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for veterans and their families.

If signed into law, AB 1925 will allow returning veterans a greater chance for succeeding in civilian life in the aftermath of combat.

November 1, 2009 (El Cajon) -- Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine) will sponsor a Veterans Resource Fair for San Diego-area veterans on November 12, 2009, in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2275. The event is set for 2 PM to 4 PM at VFW Post 2275, located at 136 Chambers Street  in El Cajon.  Counselors from Veterans Affairs will be on hand to offer assistance to veterans.

HOUSE PASSES FILNER'S BILL TO SECURE TIMELY FUNDING FOR VETERANS’ HEALTH CARE

 

2ND BILL TO BUILD MORE V.A. CLINICS ALSO APPROVED

 

October 11, 2009 (Washington D.C.)– On Thursday, the House of Representatives approved an amendment to H.R. 1016, a bill to secure timely funding for veterans’ health care delivered through the Veterans Health Administration (VHA).

“Today, the House of Representatives took action to respond to years of chronic underfunding of VA medical care,” said Congressman Bob Filner (D-San Diego), Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs and author of the bill. “Over the last 23 years, 20 VA budgets have been passed late – and our veterans pay the price with fewer doctors, longer waiting times, and more restricted access for the 6 million veterans using VA health care."

NEW VETERANS' CEMETERY APPROVED AT MIRAMAR, MAY OPEN BY LATE 2010

May 29, 2009 (San Diego) – Congressman Bob Filner, Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, announced today that the Department of Veterans Affairs has chosen a San Diego firm, Van Dyke Landscape Associates, to design a newly-approved Miramar Satellite Cemetery.

"Progress at last!” said Congressman Filner, who chairs the House Committee on Veterans Affairs. “We need to move this along as quickly as possible. Veterans’ families should not be required to travel to the Riverside National Cemetery to pay respect to their loved ones.”

ANDERSON PROPOSES TAX BREAKS FOR VETERANS

May 28, 2009 (San Diego's East County)--“I spent 26 years serving my country in the US Navy, and I would do it again,” said Arthur Armagost, an Alpine resident and veteran. “But it pains me to see men and women I served with leaving California when they retire. They spent their entire careers stationed in California but can’t afford to live here anymore.”

State Assemblyman Joel Anderson (R-El Cajon) agrees with Armagost and is leading an effort to make California friendly to veterans and military retirees.

May 26, 2009 (San Diego)--Tomorrow, Congressman Bob Filner is hosting a Veterans Town Hall at San Diego State University (SDSU) to publicly discuss the impact of the new Post-9/11 GI Bill on our veterans. Congress passed legislation to significantly expand the educational benefits for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The Department of Veterans Affairs recently began accepting applications for these benefits.
