QUEEN FIRE BURNING NEAR JULIAN AND BANNER

Update: The fire is 75% contained, reports Cal Fire San Diego shortly before 5 p.m.

August 1, 2021 (Julian) - The #QueenFire has burned 15 acres near the Desert Queen Mine, approximately 2 miles east of Banner and 5 miles east of Julian near State Route 78.

The fire is burning in difficult terrain for ground crews. Cal Fire reported at approximately 3:18 p.m. that "[f]irefighters continue to make great progress from the air and ground."

RAMONA MAN AND CHILD KILLED IN CHRISTMAS EVE COLLSION; THREE OTHERS INJURED

Update: The driver of the Toyota has also died. He has been identified as Gonzalo Rodriguez.

The child who perished has been identified as Christian Diaz, per the San DIego County Medical Examiner.

December 24, 2018 (Ramona) – A small boy was killed in a two vehicle collision in Ramona late this morning on State Route 78 east of Haverford Rd. near Ramona. Four other people were injured in the Christmas Eve crash, including a second child who has been life-flighted to a hospital.

According to Officer Travis Garrow with the California Highway Patrol, a 44-year-old Ramona man was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry westbound, with three passengers, when his vehicle veered off the road onto the shoulder. According to witnesses, he over-corrected and crossed the center lines into the path of an eastbound 2014 Dodge Ram SUV driven by a 77-year-old man from Falls City, Oregon. The vehicles collided head-on.

June 4, 2017 (Ramona) -- State Route 78 will be closed for 10 days between Weekend Villa Road to Indian Oak Road between Escondido and Ramona, starting on Friday, June 9th at 6 a.m. through Monday, June19th.

MOTORCYCLIST STRUCK BY CAR ON HIGHWAY 78 SUSTAINS MAJOR INJURIES

 

March 18, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – Shirley Frantum, 51, of Upland was riding her Harley Davidson east on Highway 78 on March 16 when she entered a curve east of San Felipe Road. She was struck by a Hyundai Sonata driven by Matthew Hon, 20, from Murrieta.

“According to witness statements, the Hyundai and the motorcycle entered the curve at approximately the same time.  The driver of the motorcycle was traveling on the double yellow lines," said Officer Brian Pennings with the California Highway Patrol. “ The Hyundai was driving close to the yellow lines, but still within the westbound lane.”

78 CLOSED IN RAMONA DUE TO FATALITY

January 3, 2012 (Ramona) – Highway 78 westbound is closed in both directions between Ash and Haverford Road in Ramona due to a fatality accident which occurred at 3:48 p.m.  

Larry Landeros at the CHP confirmed that the collision involved a red scooter and a red car.  There is no word yet on the identity of the victim.

HIGHWAY 78 CLOSED IN RAMONA


September 12, 2011 (Ramona) –A semi-truck hauling a fully loaded grain trailer has overturned on Highway 78 and Rancho Sante Fe Court. A SIG alert has been issued. As of 3:31 p.m., the CHP website reports Highway 78 will be shut down for at least two hours between Julian Road and 3 Road to cleanup the roadway.

 

There are no reported injuries in the accident.

BORREGO SPRINGS WOMAN KILLED IN HIGHWAY 78 CRASH

January 24, 2011 (Borrego Springs) –Bambi Lynn Woodson, 53, was killed Saturday, January 22 at 8:45 a.m. in a rollover accident on Highway 78 in Borrego Springs, the San Diego Medical Examiner reports.

HIGHWAY 78 CLOSED

September 11, 2010 (San Pasqual) – Highway 78 is closed in both directions on the east side of the San Diego Wild Animal Park and is expected to remain closed until at last 12:30 p.m. , according to the California Highway Patrol. Traffic is being diverted to Bandy Canyon and Haverford while emergency crews search for the driver of a vehicle involved in a serious accident who left a trail of blood leading into a nearby canyon, the Union-Tribune reports.

BRUSH FIRES IN ESCONDIDO ON HIGHWAY 78 CONTAINED

July 3, 2010  (Escondido) Four separate brush fires along eastbound Highway 78 are now contained, East County Magazine has learned.  Causes of the blazes are under investigation.

April 4, 2010 (Ramona) 11:17 a.m. -- Highway 78 is closed in both directions at Ramona Highlands Road, Cal-Fire has informed East County Magazine.  A vehicle struck a four-foot boulder and emergency/rescue workers are now working to extricate at least one victim in the crash.  A sig alert has been issued.  No further details are available at this time.

ROCKY ROADS: 78 BLOCKED BY BOULDER: + ROLLOVER SHUTS DOWN I-5

February 23, 2010 (Julian) - A 20,000 boulder has rolled off a mountain and is blocking Highway 78 east of Wynola Road and is blocking the highway, CHP reports. In addition, I-5 is blocked at B Street with traffic diversion in place due to a fatality rollover which occurred at 8:40 a.m.

January 31, 2010 (Julian) – Carl K. Davis Jr., 28, of San Diego died in a head-on collision shortly after noon yesterday on Highway 78 at Payson Drive, Julian.

NEW HAZARDS TONIGHT: BOULDERS BLOCK ROADWAYS, FREEWAY RAMPS FLOOD

 

January 20, 2010 (San Diego County) 9:10 p.m. – Shortly after we issued an earlier alert about hazardous traffic conditions, CHP posted updates of several new hazards.

EAST COUNTY UPDATE:

Boulders are reported in the roadway at the junction of Sunrise Highway and Interstate 8. There are also large rocks in the roadway on Highway 78 near Sentenac Canyon in El Cajon, where a vehicle has struck the rocks and emergency responders are en route. I-15 northbound is flooded at the SR 75 offramp. The Carmel Mt. Road onramp to I-15 northbound is also flooded and now blocked. In Borrego Springs, boulders are in the road at SR 78 and Borrego Springs Road. In Santee, Gorge Road is flooded in the 9200 block after a flood channel overflowed.
