WILDFIRE IN LAKE MORENA

Update 8:55 p.m. - the fire is at 47 acres and 50% contained per Cleveland National Forest on X.

Update 7 p.m. --Old Highway 80 has reopened.

Update 4 p.m.--Boulder Oaks Campground is being evacuated as a precaution.

Update 2:12 p.m.--Eastbound I-8 exit at Kitchen Creek is closed, per CHP site. The fire is now 43 acres and 5% contained, per Cleveland National Forest.

Update 11:53 p.m.  CHP is closing down Old Highway 80 between Kitchen Creek and Buckman Springs Road.

June 30, 2024 (Lake Morena) -- The #Kitchen Fire reported 15 minutes ago has grown to 25 acres, with no containment. The fire startedon Kitchen Creek Road near Old Highway 80 in Campo's Lake Morena community.

SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER SWAT STANDOFF IN POWAY

June 30, 2024 (Poway) –Travis Bradley Miller, 34,is in custody following a six-hour SWAT standoff at his home in the 13000 block of York Avenue in Poway

His roommate called 9-1-1 around 1:30 p.m. yesterday o report that Miller attacked him with a box cutter.The roommate had abrasions during the altercation with the suspect.

June 26, 2024 (Rancho San Diego) -- Many factors can cause a fire. As temperatures begin to climb and vegetation dries out, the risk of wildfire is all too real to rural San Diegans. A recent vegetation fire was reported along Jamacha Blvd. and Campo Rd. just outside Rancho San Diego on Wednesday, June 19.

The fire was dispatched as a small vegetation fire in medium to heavy fuels with a moderate rate of spread. San Miguel fire was first on scene and confirmed an active brush fire. Units from neighboring agencies including Cal Fire and air support from San Diego Sheriff's ASTREA and Romona Air Attack base were dispatched to the scene. 

As ground crews battled the flames the investigative division of Cal-Fire was focusing on the cause of the fire.

DEL MAR BRUSH FIRE: 2500 EVACUATED, FAIRGROUNDS OPENED AS TEMPORARY EVACUATION CENTER

June 25, 2024 (Del Mar) -- A fire in Del Mar has burned 19 acres, resulting in mandatory evacuations for 2500 people, though firefighters have halted the fire's forward spread. Evacuees are being directed to the Del Mar Fairgrounds, where the San Diego County Fair is underway.

If you are going to the Fair, be aware that traffic and air quality have also been negatively impacted. Del Mar Heights and Carmel Valley Rd. exits are both closed due to the fire. Air quality is impacted as far east as Poway.

FIREFIGHTERS MAKE QUICK WORK OF FIRE IN PALA, STILL FIGHTING IN OTAY MESA

Update: As of 6:52 p.m. 6/23 the #border58fire on Otay Mountain is still at 137 acres and 80% contained.

June 22, 2024 (San Diego) -- Cal-fire is making full use of air resources today in remote hard to reach areas first in Pala, in North County, and then in South Bay approximately five miles southeast of Otay Lakes, the latter of which is still only partially contained. 

The #Border58Fire approximately near Otay Truck Trail that burned 137 acres as of 5:55 p.m., but most of that burned within the first two and a half hours of the fire and rotor wing aircraft making significant progress before the blaze was able to get out of control. The fire is 5% contained as of 7:19 p.m. per Cal-Fire on X.

EXTREME HEAT FORECAST FRIDAY THROUGH NEXT WEEK

June 20, 2024 (San Diego’s East County)  --The National Weather Service is warning of a prolonged heat wave starting Friday and extending to late next week. But before you think about going to the beach to cool off, be aware that potentially dangerous lightning storms and rip currents are forecast for coastal areas Saturday and Sunday. 

Temperatures could reach up to 114 degrees by this weekend in the low deserts and up to 105 degrees in the high deserts.   San Diego County valleys and mountains could reach 98 degrees.  The high heat poses risks of heat-related illness for people, pets and livestock without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration.

June 19, 2024 (Spring Valley)-- A brush fire has burned 1 to 1.5 acres nearJamacha Blvd. and Campo Rd. in Spring Valley.  This fire is burning under power lines, so air resources are unable to suppress the fire with a drop. The fire is burning in medium fuels at a slow rate of speed, per Watch Command.

CHP has shut down Jamacha Blvd. in both directions

June 18, 2024 (Sacramento) -- California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara unveiled Wednesday an effort to force insurers to resume writing policies in high-fire-risk areas — part of an overall plan to address the state’s insurance crisis. 
 
It consists of three different ways insurers can meet minimum requirements for writing policies in areas deemed “high risk” or “very high risk” by the department, which aligns with Cal Fire’s identification of hazard zones. Insurance Department regulators said this hybrid approach takes into account the state’s complex geography as well as the different risk levels that big and small insurers can afford to assume. Lara said this should help homeowners who have lost coverage or been forced to turn to the last-resort FAIR Plan.

Horse grazing in the CSNM was instrumental in helping CALFIRE's suppression of the 2018 Klamathon Fire, which threatened to destroy Ashland, Oregon. Unlike ruminant grazers (cattle, sheep, goats and deer) that digest seeds of native plants and grasses, ending their life-cycles, horses pass a majority of seeds they consume in their dung, which completes the life-cycles of the flora, and benefits all of the fauna in the ecosystem, including pollinators.

GUSTY WINDS FUEL FIRE IN IN-KO-PAH

June 16, 2024 (Jacumba Hot Springs) -- A brush fire in the In-Ko-Pah area has burned 30 acres at the boundary of Jacumba and Ocotillo, near the San Diego and Imperial County lines this afternoon. The #Inkopah5Fire is 20 percent contained and forward spread has been halted, per Cal Fire. On westbound I-8 just east of In-Ko-Pah, one lane is closed due to the fire.

Ben Schultz, owner of the Desert View Tower roadside landmark and Boulder Park on In-Ko-Pah, both on the National Registry of Historic Places, says he was told to evacuate after the fire started close to his home and businesses on In-Ko-Pah Road, but stayed trying to roundup his dogs and cats.

“High winds still making the fire out here seem rather scary,” he posted. Schultz said an RV brought to In-Ko-Pah Towing caught fire, igniting dry brush between I-8 and In-Ko-Pah Road.

June 10, 2024 (Washington, D.C.) — The U.S. Senate Budget Committee debated the cause of the insurance crisis plaguing homeowners around the country at a Wednesday hearing, with Democrats identifying climate change as the ultimate driving force of rising premiums and Republicans pointing to high government spending and inflation.
 
Homeowners insurance premiums have skyrocketed in recent years, following billions in damages, which has led many insurance companies to drop coverage. An uptick in extreme weather events has been a factor in rising costs.

SWIFT RESPONSE SAVES HOMES IN SPRING VALLEY BRUSH FIRE

June 8, 2024 (Spring Valley) – A multi-agency response prevented a wind-driven brush fire in Spring Valley yesterday from destroying multiple homes threatened by the flames. The fire was originally dispatched as a residential structure fire near the 9800 block of Ivanho Street.  The first units on scene reported the blaze had extended to the vegetation on the back side of the residence.

As the fire grew, spreading across a grassy field, structures were threatened. The Incident Commander ordered additional engines and helicopter support. An evacuation order for zone SDC-2151 was broadcast as the fire came within a few feet of homes in the area.  Smoke was visible and could be smelled across Rancho San Diego, Spring Valley and parts of La Mesa.

EVACUATIONS ORDERED IN SPRING VALLEY DUE TO FIRE

Update 3:35 p.m.: Evacuation orders have been lifted.

 

June 7, 2024 -- Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued in Spring Valley due to a structure fire that spread into brush.  The evacuations are ordered for the area that is:

North of Omega St., Jamacha Blvd. and Ivanho St.

South of Citrus Tree Lane

East of Galopago St., Lemon Ave., and Maya St.

West of Sweetwater Springs Blvd.

 

San Miguel Fire Department officials told ABC 10News that a structure fire first erupted in the 9800 block of Ivanho Street. Strong winds then blew embers towards a field about a half-mile away and ignited the brush fire.More homes are immediately threatened. Residents are urged to leave now due to an immediate threat to life. The area is closed to public access.

June 6, 2024 (San Diego) – Last Thursday, the San Diego Regional Fire Foundation announced it will be funding 24 Fire Safe Councils (FSCs) with grants totaling $250,000 to aid in wildfire prevention and preparedness, including community education to make their neighborhoods safer.  The announcement was made during the Fire Safe Council of San Diego County’s 17th Annual Volunteer Awards Ceremony, which recognized several outstanding individuals and agencies for their significant contributions to fostering fire-safe and resilient communities.

CONTEST GETS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS THINKING ABOUT FIRE SAFETY

 
June 4, 2024 (Borrego Springs) -- Students at a local middle school are helping their families prepare for an emergency by creating home fire safety escape plans.
 
Borrego Springs Middle School students created the plans as part of a contest and shared them at a recent safety resource fair. It’s for a pilot program created by San Diego County Fire using state emergency preparedness grant funding.

BRUSH FIRE IN POTRERO

Update 5:40 p.m.  -- Forward rate of spread has been stopped at 2 acres with bo damage to any structure. Firefighters will no continue to put out hotspots and strengthen control lines. Cal Fire praises homeowners for having defensible space, which helped save their residences.

June 4, 2024 (Potrero, CA) -- The #RanchFire has burned two acres after starting this afternoon in the 1000 block of Harris Ranch Road in Potrero's Bell Valley.  The fire is burning at a moderate rate of spread and has potential for 40 acres, per Cal Fire.

Structures are threatened, but firefighters are making good progress, according to the incident commander.

FIRE ON OTAY MOUNTAIN CHARS 400 ACRES

June 3, 2024 (Otay) – The #Border53Fire is burning on both sides of the international border.  The fire has charred 400 acres, including 250 acres in the U.S. and150 in Mexico. The wildfire is 60% contained, with no structures threatened and no evacuations, per Cal Fire.

The blaze began June 1 in Buttewig Canyon on the south slope of Otay Mountain.

CAL FIRE SUSPENDS BURN PERMITS IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY

May 30, 2024 (El Cajon) – After another wet winter, warming temperatures and winds are quickly drying out the abundant annual grass crop. The increasing fire danger posed by the high volume of dead grass and hotter, drier conditions in the region is prompting CAL FIRE to suspend all burn permits for outdoor residential burning within the State Responsibility Area of San Diego County. This suspension takes effect 8:00 am on June 1, 2024 and suspends all residential outdoor burning of landscape debris such as branches and leaves. 
 
"Due to increased fire risk, we are suspending all burn permits effective June 1st. This measure is essential to safeguard our communities and resources during this heightened period of danger," said Unit and Fire Chief Tony Mecham.

BRUSH FIRE IN AGUA CALIENTE

Update May 31,2024 9 a.m.-- The #GreatFire has burned 187 acres and is 50% contained.No structures have been lost and none are threatened.  One civilian injury is reported,  per Cal Fire.

Update 4 p.m.: The fire is now 50 acres and 5% contained.

May 30, 2024 (Agua Caliente) -- A brush fire is burning along S-2 in the Agua Caliente community.  Two acres have burned as of 2 p.m., with potential for extended attack.

Cal Fire/San Diego is at the scene with air and ground resources; additional resources have been requested by the Incident commander #GreatIC.

FLOOD VICTIMS REMINDER ABOUT MAY 31 DEADLINE TO RECEIVE A SHARE OF $1 MILLION AVAILABLE FOR HOUSING EXPENSES

May 26, 2024 (El Cajon) – Two of San Diego’s largest realtor trade associations, the Pacific Southwest Association of Realtors (PSAR), with an office in El Cajon, and the San Diego Association of Realtors (SDAR), are reminding San Diego flood victims that Friday, May 31 is the deadline to apply for the opportunity to receive financial assistance.
 
The two realtor trade associations were jointly awarded in March a $1.16 million grant from the Realtors Relief Foundation (RRF) to assist flood survivors. RRF is affiliated with the National Association of Realtors (NAR).
 
Since then, officials with the two realtor associations said they have been meeting to review applications and reach out to community leaders and organizations about the RRF grant. Applications for more than 100 families are on schedule for approval, but the realtor groups are hoping to double this before the May 31 deadline.

FIRE AT SANTEE’S ADVANCED WATER PURIFICATION PLANT EXTINGUISHED

May 23, 2024 (Santee)-- A fire that sent large plumes of smoke across East County yesterday was caused when workers at the Advanced Water Purification (AWP) project in Santee were joining together two large pieces of plastic pipe.

Santee Fire Chief Justin Matsushita said while workers were fusing two large pipes that are 42 inches in diameter, the plastic material, called HDPE, caught fire and quickly overwhelmed the workers, prompting their 911 call.

FIRE AT OTAY BATTERY STORAGE FACILITY PROMPTS EVACUATION WARNINGS, SHELTER-IN-PLACE ORDER FOR DONOVAN PRISON

Update May 28, 2024 -- All evacuation orders have been lifted, though firefighters remain on scene.

Update 9:30 p.m. --The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department has issued an Evacuation Order. An Evacuation Order requires immediate movement out of the affected area due to an imminent threat to life. All persons in the impacted area should prepare to evacuate. Evacuation Order means there is extreme danger in your area.  You must leave now; do not wait. Contact your neighbors and share information.

May 17, 2024 (Otay Mesa) – The #CaminoFire at Gateway Energy Storage, a lithium battery storage facility  in Otay Mesa, flared up overnight and prompted county officials to issue an evacuation warning for businesses in the surrounding area due to the potential for release of toxic gasses.

The fire has also resulted in a shelter-in-place order for nearby Donovan State Prison. A road closure is in effect at Camino de la Fuente and Paseo de la Fuente.

According to Cal Fire’s incident update this morning, firefighters continue to battle the  thermal runaway fire involving lithium ion batteries.

The harmful gasses are “making access an issue for firefighters,” Cal Fire advises.”The building’s sprinkler system is currently being supplemented with the use of the existing standpipe system and the fire is still contained to the building of origin."
