LA MESA HOSTS OUTREACH SESSION ON OUTDOOR DINING SEPT. 19

September 16, 2024 (La Mesa) – Many restaurants have set up outdoor dining sites since the pandemic. While some cities, such as San Diego, have since imposed barriers to outdoor dining that forced many to shut down, La Mesa aims to streamline the process for new outdoor dining sites to open, while retaining clear paths of travel to businesses. 

On Thursday, Sept. 19 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the city will host an outreach session on outdoor dining at the La  Mesa Community Center in the Arbor Room, 4975  Memorial Drive, La Mesa.

TRUMP SAFE AFTER SECRET SERVICE FIRES AT GUNMAN ON FLORIDA GOLF COURSE

September 16, 2024 (Palm Beach, Florida) – While former President Donald Trump was playing golf at his golf courses in Palm Beach, Florida yesterday afternoon, Secret Service agents posted a few holes away spotted a man pointing a rifle through shrubbery at the perimeter of the course.  An agent opened fire and the man fled, dropping a semi-automatic rifle and backpack. He was later apprehended.

Trump, the Republican nominee in the November presidential election, is safe. On his media outlet, he praised the Secret Service and law enforcement, writing,”THE JOB WAS ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING.”  In a later fundraising email, he pledged, “Nothing will slow me down.”

A witness took a photo of the would-be assassin’s vehicle, enabling authorities to arrest Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, a short time later. Routh was charged with being a felon in possession of a weapon and possessing a weapon without a serial number. He faces up to 20 years in prison.

Routh was previously convicted of possessing a machine gun in 2022, among other prior offenses.  His social media posts indicate he voted for Trump in 2016 but came to regret that choice, criticizing Trump on foreign policy, particularly Russia's invasion of Ukraine.  Routh has stated that he intended to volunteer to fight for Ukraine.

In addition, an arsonist has been arrested in connection with the devastating Line Fire in San Bernadino County. The federal government has approved resources to help fight all three large Southern California fires.

RAMONA SCHOOL THREAT UNFOUNDED, SHERIFF SAYS

September 13, 2024 (Ramona) –Yesterday morning before 9 a.m., the Ramona Sheriff's Substation was notified by Olive Pierce Middle School about a threat of a possible school shooting. After an investigation, authorities have concluded the threat was unfounded.

Deputies arrived at the school within minutes. For the safety of students and staff, school administrators made the decision to place the school on a limited lockdown while deputies investigated the incident.    

After a thorough search of the entire campus, deputies did not find anything suspicious at Olive Pierce Middle School. No one was hurt.

Out of an abundance of caution, deputies also conducted security sweeps at Ramona High School and Ramona Community Montessori School and provided extra patrols at all three campuses until the end of the school day.

NEW PRESCRIPTION DRUG CAP FOR MEDICARE MEANS BIG SAVINGS FOR CALIFORNIA SENIORS

September 12, 2024 (Sacramento) --Hundreds of thousands of older Californians will see huge savings on prescription drugs starting in January, according to a new report from AARP.

That's because the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act caps prescription drug costs at $2,000 per year for people on Medicare, starting in 2025.

An estimated 271,000 people in the Golden State will hit the out-of-pocket maximum next year, Nina Weiler-Harwell, associate director of advocacy and community engagement for AARP California, said.

"Medicare drug plan enrollees nationwide who reach the new out-of-pocket cap will see an average savings of roughly $1,500," said Weiler-Harwell, "or 56% in 2025 for new prescription drugs."

On average, 40% of people on Medicare who reach the cap will save at $1,000 a year. And 12% will see savings of more than $3,000.

September 11, 2024 (Valley Center) – This morning,  State Senator Brian Jones (40-SD) joined with the Valley Center Fire Protection District for a September 11 remembrance ceremony commemorating the worst terrorism attack on U.S. soil.

“We gather 23 years later to remember the events that occurred on September 11, 2001 and to pay tribute to Firefighters, EMS, Police Officers, Military Personnel, and civilians who paid the ultimate sacrifice to save those who were trapped in the Twin Towers, and in the Pentagon after a cowardly act of terrorism against the United States of America,” says Jones.

We also remember the American and United Airlines Flight Crew Members and the passengers who perished on the hijacked flights that crashed into the Pentagon and into a rural field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.”

MAJOR FIRES BURNING IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA: SMOKE IMPACTING SAN DIEGO’S NORTH COUNTY

September 10, 2024 (San Diego) – Several major wildfires have burned tens of thousand of acres, collectively threatening thousands of homes across southern California including San Bernadino, Riverside, Orange and Los Angeles Counties.

Although the Roblar Fire on Camp Pendleton has charred  1,000 acres on Camp Pendleton and an unnamed fire is burning two miles south of the international border near Boulevard, none of these fires currently pose threats to lives or property in San Diego County, according to Cal Fire. However, drifting smoke from fires to the north has resulted in ash on vehicles and air quality concerns in North County.

HARRIS, TRUMP IN FIRST DEBATE TONIGHT

September 10, 2024 (San Diego) – The first presidential candidate debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will take place tonight, Tuesday Sept.10, at 6 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. This marks the first time the two candidates will meet in person, and the first opportunity for voters to view a debate featuring Harris as the Democratic nominee, after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.

The much-anticipated debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia will  air live on ABC TV and stream on ABC News Live, Disney and Hulu.  Some other networks including NBC and CNN also plan to air the debate,  with many beginning pre-debate commentary ahead of time.

The race pits Harris, a seasoned prosecutor and former California Attorney General with strong courtroom speaking skills, against Trump, a prominent businessman convicted on 36 counts of fraud. Hot campaign topics include the economy, women’s reproductive health, immigration, inflation, climate change, foreign policy including the Ukraine and Israel-Gaza wars, the future of our democracy, Project 2025, personal freedoms, and more.

SANTANA SHOOTER HAS FIRST PAROLE HEARING TUESDAY

Update September 11, 2024 -- Parole has been denied for Williams. At yesterday's hearing, Board of Parole Hearings Commissioner Kevin Chappell stated that Williams still poses a threat to public safety, telling Williams "“By your testimony today, it is really unclear if you understand why you committed this horrendous act of violence.”  Testimony was overwhelmingly against Williams' release, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

September 9, 2024 (Santee, CA) – It’s been 23 years since 15-year-old Charles Andrew “Andy” Williams took his father’s revolver to school and repeatedly opened fire, killing two students and injured 13 other people at Santana High School in Santee.

Tomorrow, as the result of a new law regarding youthful offenders, he will have his first parole hearing—drawing a strong response from community members, many stilll traumatized by loss and grief.

EXTREME HEAT CAUSES POWER OUTAGES TO OVER 14,000 SDG&E CUSTOMERS

September 9, 2024 (San Diego) – At least 14,000 SDG&E customers across San Diego had power outages yesterday afternoon, left sweltering in triple-digit heat.

The majority of those outages were due to a problem at a substation in Rancho San Diego, which was likely caused by the extreme weather conditions, according to SDG&E communications manager Alex Welling,Times of San Diego reports.

Extreme heat causes wear and tear on infrastructure equipment and the power grid.  A key issue yesterday may have been numerous households running air conditioning overnight, since low temperatures remained uncomfortably hot in many areas.

Fortunately, power to most customers was restored within a few hours, as SDG&E crews toiled through the heat to make repairs.

HEAT BREAKS ALL-TIME RECORDS

September 9, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) – Yesterday’s sweltering temperatures broke numerous all-time temperatures across our region, as the heat wave continues today with triple-digit  temperatures. New high temperature records for September 8 were set in several local communities, including some that have been keeping track of weather records for over a century:

MAN ARRESTED FOR SETTING FIRE TO HIS RENTED HOME IN EL CAJON

September 7, 2024 (El Cajon) – San Diego Police have arrested Jose Orozco, 53, for arson, after a landlord-tenant dispute. After the bedroom in his El Cajon residence on Coker Way was set on fire Friday night, detectives from El Cajon Police Dept. found   plastic bottle filled with gasoline and a rag on top in his vehicle. 

Orozco was later found by San Diego Police Department and arrested. He is charged with arson and possession of a destructive device.

September 7, 2024 (Campo) -- Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for a brush fire burning at Church Road south of the Golden Acorn Casino near Old Hwy 80. The #ChurchFire has potential for 1,000 acres; it has burned 65 acres so far, per Cal Fire.

September 6, 2024 (Ramona) -- Users of State Route 67 (SR-67) can now enjoy the benefits of the completed Pavement Rehabilitation Project, which stretches 18 miles within the San Vicente Corridor from Lakeside to the community of Ramona. The goals of the project were to repair distressed pavement and improve ride quality, restore the roadway to a state of good repair, reduce maintenance, extend the life of the existing pavement, and add safety improvements.

HELIX FRESHMAN FOOTBALL PLAYER RUN OVER BY TRASH TRUCK

September 6, 2024 (La Mesa) – Caleb Carvalho, 14, was riding his bicycle to school yesterday morning when he was struck and seriously injured by a garbage truck at the intersection of University Avenue and La Mesa Blvd. 

A Go Fund Me site has been set up to help the teen, a freshman and football player at Helix Charter High School, with his medical bills as he faces long road to recovery.

His father, David Carvalho, told NBC 7 that Caleb’s pelvis was broken on both front and back. Currently hospitalized, Caleb will need rehabilitation and costly medical treatments. 

Caleb was in the bicycle lane but the trash truck driver didn’t see him, running over Caleb as the truck pulled into a driveway.

September 5, 2024 (San Diego) – The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for nearly all of San Diego County, due to dangerously hot conditions with high temperatures of up to 116 degrees in the desert and 102 degrees in inland cities and 104 in East County’s mountain communities.

Nights will stay warm, with temperatures mostly in the 70s even after dark.

EVACUATIONS ORDERED IN ESCONDIDO DUE TO LITHIUM ION BATTERY STORAGE FIRE, POTENTIAL FOR TOXIC FUMES

Update September 6, 2024:  The Escondido Union School District closed multilpe schools today.  Businesses in the area remained closed and evacuation orders continue. According to SDG&E, lithium ion battery storage fires must burn themselves out.

September 5, 2024 (Escondido) -- Evacuations have been ordered and road closures are in effect in Escondido, just west of I-15 and south of state route 78, due to a fire at a battery storage facility. Such fires have the potential to release toxic fumes.  Enterprise Street is closed between Mission Road and Auto Park Way.

There is an immediate threat to life, so residents are urged to leave immediately. The area is closed for the public to enter. View map of evacuation zones.

Evacuees should go to Pala Casino, or to Pueblo Bank and Trust Company, 11154 Highway 76,Pala,CA.

September 4, 2024 (Washington D.C.) – Attorney General Merrick Garland today announced criminal indictments against two Russian nationals in a scheme to spread disinformation across social media under covert identities posing as U.S.-based media outlets. Their aim was to illegally influence the 2024 election, sow division among Americans, and spread propaganda favorable to Russia regarding its invasion of Ukraine. 

The defendants, Kostiantyn “Kostya” Kalashnikov and Elena “Lena”Afanasyeva, are both employees of Russia’s state-controlled media outlet in Moscow,  RT, formerly known as Russia Today.

MAYOR BILL WELLS BAND AND SAN DIEGO RESCUE MISSION SHINE A LIGHT ON MENTAL HEALTH AT OCT. 12 CONCERT

Annual concert is free this year, focusing on mental health awareness with screenings and information to the public

September 4, 2024 (El Cajon) -- El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells and his 14-piece band are partnering with the San Diego Rescue Mission this year on his acclaimed annual concert. This year’s event, “Shine a Light on Mental Health” will be held Saturday, October 12 at the Magnolia Theater,210 East Main St.,El Cajon.

The event begins with a health fair at 6:30 featuring nearly 15 local mental health and wellness providers in the courtyard providing free screening and information, followed by the concert at 8 p.m. Free tickets are available here.

Mayor Wells' 14-piece band plays Rock, Pop, R&B, and Blues from across a few decades by artists including Ray Charles, the B-52s, Santana, Stevie Wonder, Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire, Joe Walsh, and, as Wells noted, "a few songs you love but have no idea who sang them." The band is made up of friends he's played with over the years, and they are coming in from all over the country for this great cause.

MEASLES EXPOSURE AT RADY CHILDREN’S PEDIATRIC UNIT AT GROSSMONT HOSPITAL IN LA MESA AND AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

September 3, 2024 (La Mesa)  - If you or your children visited Rady Grossmont Pediatric Unit in La Mesa on August 20,  or Rady Children’s Hospital Emergency Room in San Diego on August 25, you may have been exposed to measles. 

A 13-month-old unvaccinated infant who contracted measles while traveling overseas was seen at these locations. The child is the fourth case of measles locally this year.  Measles is a serious illness that spreads easily, so anyone with symptoms is urged to contact their healthcare provider.

She spoke of domestic and foreign policy priorities, sharply contrasting her goals with those of her opponent.

“My entire career, I have only had one  client. The People,” said Harris, former California Attorney General and a former district attorney.  “With this election, our nation has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness, cynicism and divisive battles of the past. A chance to chart a New Way Forward.”

Pledging to be a President for all Americans, she added, “You can always trust me to put country above party and self. To hold sacred America’s fundamental principals—from the rule of law to free and fair elections, to the peaceful transfer of power,” alluding to her opponent, former President Donald Trump, convicted of felony fraud and facing numerous pending charges related to his efforts to overthrow the 2020 election results.

Harris said that if elected, she would strive to unite Americans around “our highest aspirations” and be a President “who leads and listens, who is realistic, practical, and has common sense. And always fights for the American people.”

EAST COUNTY ADVANCED WATER PROGRAM JOINT POWERS AUTHORITY ISSUES GREEN BONDS: $433 MILLION IN TAX-EXEMPT INTERIM NOTES

August 28, 2024 (Santee) – The East County Advanced Water Purification Joint Powers Authority (Authority) plans to issue approximately $433,235,000 in tax exempt, fixed rate notes on September 4, 2024. The Notes are being issued to finance, on an interim basis, a portion of the design, construction, and development costs of the East County Advanced Water Purification (AWP) Project. The Notes are special, limited obligations of the Authority payable solely from Net Revenues of the Authority, and, if needed, other funds held by the Authority.

GRAND OPENING OF CAL COAST CREDIT UNION STUDENT FINANCIAL CENTER AT SDSU

August 28, 2024 (San Diego) --  San Diego State University and California Coast Credit Union leaders held a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 21 commemorating the grand opening of the new Cal Coast Credit Union Student Financial Center. 

In 2023, California Coast Credit Union pledged $3 million to establish a financial center that would help students gain financial literacy and wellness skills. The Cal Coast Credit Union Student Financial Center, located on the second floor of SDSU’s Student Services West, has undergone renovations and expansions over the past year while remaining open to students. It serves as a hub for financial education, offering resources for financial aid, bill paying, budgeting, and more.

“I worked full time while I attended SDSU and I didn’t know where to turn on campus for personal financial advice,” said Cal Coast President & CEO Todd Lane (class of ’86). “I didn’t want students to experience that today. That is why it’s been a passion of mine to help develop a variety of free resources on campus to assist students with their personal finances, and make sure students are aware of them. I’m proud to know that through these efforts, we’ve helped students by setting them on a path to thrive financially in the long term.”

August 28, 2024 (Lemon Grove) – In her 2024 State of the City address delivered August 14, Lemon Grove Mayor Racquel Vasquez said,  “We are gathered tonight to celebrate our remarkable accomplishments and to embrace the exciting opportunities that are before us, and to report a shared vision for the future of our city.”

That progress includes strengthening the city’s finances, enhancing infrastructure and elevating the quality of life, according to the Mayor.

SDPD OFFICER KILLED, SECOND OFFICER SERIOUSLY INJURED AFTER SUSPECT STRUCK VEHICLE

August 28, 2024 (San Diego) –  A San Diego Police officer is dead and a second officer hospitalized in critical condition after their patrol vehicle was struck by a suspect following a high-speed chase. The suspect also died at the scene on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. west of I-805 around 11:30 p.m. on Monday.

Ironically, the chase initiated by other officers had been called off to protect public safety, shortly before the suspect slammed into the vehicle driven by Officer Austin Machitar, who was responding to a call to assist with the pursuit. A field training officer who appeared in SDPD recruitment flyers and videos, Officer Machitar had just celebrated his 30th birthday when the deadly crash occurred. He died at the scene.

Officer Zach Martinez, 27, a Navy reservist trained by Machitar, was in the patrol vehicle’s passenger seat during the crash. As of yesterday, he remained hospitalized at Sharp Memorial with serious injuries.

The suspect has been identified as Edgar Giovanny Oviedo, 16, of San Diego.

FOUR CANDIDATES VIE FOR TWO LEMON GROVE CITY COUNCIL SEATS

August 27, 2024 (Lemon Grove) – Four candidates are running for two City Council seats in Lemon Grove.  Councilman George Gastil seeks reelection. The other candidates are Sitivi “Steve” Faiai, Jessyka Heredia, and Seth Andrew Smith.  Depending on the outcomes in the Council and mayoral races, Lemon Grove will have at least one new face on its City Council, and could have as many as three. 

That’s because Councilmembers Liana LeBaron and Alysson Snow are challenging incumbent Racquel Vasquez in the mayoral race. LeBaron’s Council term is up this year, meaning if she loses her mayoral bid, she will be off the Council.  Snow’s term isn’t up until 2026, meaning she will stay on the Council if she loses her mayoral bid. If Snow wins, this would create a new open seat, which the new City Council could fill by appointment or special election.  Read ECM’s article on the mayoral race.

Lemon Grove’s City Council meetings have often been contentious, with clashes among some Councilmembers as well as pushback from some members of the public on issues including homelessness, housing, business development, street repairs and flooded storm drains. The city has a smaller budget than other East County cities, making it a daunting challenge to meet the many priorities voiced by residents.

SANTEE ELECTIONS INCLUDE MAYOR, TWO COUNCIL SEATS AND SALES TAX HIKE

August 27, 2024 (Santee)-- This November, Santee voters are facing several choices on their ballots, one for mayor and one for District Four Council representative, as well as whether to enact a half cent increase to their sales tax.

In the 4th District, incumbent Councilman Dustin Trotter is being challenged by Augie Scalzitti. Development is emerging as a key issue in this race.
