April 12, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – San Diego Sheriff detectives, following an extensive theft and fraud investigation, have made several arrests related to vehicle burglaries at local hiking trails including the El Capitan Preserve in Lakeside, Blue Sky Open Space Trail in Santee, and trailheads at Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego.

TEEN GIRL SEXUALLY ASSAULTED IN RAMONA

April 12, 2011 (Ramona) – A 17-year-old girl was sexually assaulted between 11 p.m. and midnight Friday night while walking in an alley in Ramona, behind businesses located between Main and B Streets, the San Diego Sheriff’s office reports today. The male assailant wore a dark, hooded sweatshirt; no other description is available at this time.

According to Lt. James Bolwerk, the teen is a Ramona resident. “The Sheriff’s Department reminds the public to always travel in pairs, stay in well lit areas, and be aware of their surroundings,” a release from the Sheriff’s office states.

MAN IN DRESS ARRESTED FOR ASSAULTING TEEN GIRL

 

 

April 10, 2011 (San Diego)—A 17-year-old girl walking in the 6000 block of University (about 10 blocks west of La Mesa in the El Cerrito area) was attacked tonight by a Hispanic male who wore a dress and brandished a knife. According to San Diego Police, the suspect grabbed the victim’s breasts and tried to pull her into some bushes.

PAROLEE AIRLIFTED OUT OF SPRING VALLEY CANYON

 

April 8, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Jack Messina, a parolee described by Sheriff’s officials as a “person of interest” in a 1995 cold-case killing in Texas was airlifted out of an East County canyon Friday.

 

Messina failed to report to his parole agent, according to a press release issued by the Sheriff. He was found in an intersection at Sweetwater Springs Blvd. and Jamacha Blvd. with a GPS tracking device running low on battery. Deputies found him “very drunk” with his foot in a soft cast on a trail muddy from the recent rain.

COUNTY, LAW ENFORCEMENT BACK BLOCK’S BILL TO COMBAT GANGS ENGAGED IN HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND SEXUAL EXPLOITATION


Pimping and other exploitative crimes are now second biggest revenue source for gangs in San Diego County

 

April 8, 2011 (San Diego) – To help law enforcement tackle the growing problem of gang-related criminal sexual exploitation and human trafficking, Assemblymember Marty Block (AD-78) today was joined by San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore to support AB 918

 

The bill, authored by Block and sponsored by San Diego County, would give law enforcement better tools to combat criminal street gangs that commit the crimes of pimping, pandering or human trafficking--the second biggest income source for local gangs.

SHOOTINGS OF TWO MOTORISTS ON 163 PUT POLICE ON ALERT, DRIVERS ON EDGE

 

April 7, 2011 (San Diego) – California Highway Patrol officers are on heightened alert after two shootings around 7:10 a.m. this morning on Highway 163 in Kearny Mesa. One shot wounded a USD student and another bullet lodged in a vehicle owned by a Rancho Bernardo man.

 

Police shut down the freeway and found about 10 shell casings from a small-caliber gun along the side of the freeway between the Clairment Mesa and Balboa exits. There is no evidence to indicate that either victim was targeted.

TEEN BEATEN, ROBBED ON TROLLEY IN LA MESA

 

 

April 5, 2011 (La Mesa)  At 8:30 a.m. today, a 14-year-old boy was punched in the face three times and his necklace and hat were taken by two suspects aboard a trolley in La Mesa. The robbery occurred while the victim and suspects were riding eastbound on the MTS Trolley between the Spring Street and La Mesa Boulevard stations.

SUSPECT KILLED IN APPLE STORE ROBBERY IDENTIFIED

April 5, 2011 (Otay) -- The suspect killed in yesterday's early morning robbery and shootout at the Apple store in the Otay Ranch Mall  has been identified at Alex Somphonh Choulamontry, age 23. According to Chula Vista Police, Choulamontry was a documented gang member and on active California State parole. Choulamontry had convictions for theft, possession of controlled substances, driving under the influence and false identification to a peace officer.

MOOSE NO LONGER ON THE LOOSE: STOLEN RAMONA STATUE RECOVERED

 

April 4, 2011 (Ramona) -- A stolen bronze moose statue from Ramona was recovered in a vacant field on March 30, about a mile from the 2800 block of Willow Oak Drive where it was stolen sometime between February 15 and 23. The area is located at the intersection of Dye Road and Southern Oak Road and is frequently used by people who ride and train horses.

 

A watchful citizen made the discovery and contacted the Sheriff’s Department after reading  media articles about the theft of several statues in our region.

POLICE CHIEF DESCRIBES DEADLY SHOOTOUT AT OTAY MALL

 

Swift action by Police and Border Patrol  canine patrol led to capture of two suspects; Robbery may be part of a series of storefront “smash and grabs”


Update 7:15 p.m.:  The two suspects arrested have been identified as Johnny Chenda, 25, and Melissa Ortiz, 21.  Both are charged with commercial burglary and conspiracy. The third suspect, who died, has not yet been identified.  The security guard has been identified as Jose Jimenez, 58, with Security Industry Specialists in Culver City.

 

April 4, 2011 (Otay Mesa) – Chula Police Chief David Bejarano has provided an interview with East County Magazine moments after returning from the scene of a fatal shooting at Otay Ranch Town Center shopping mall. He disclosed chilling details of a brazen robbery attempt that ended with one suspect dead following a hail of bullets and a massive response by law enforcement to seal off and search the neighborhood.

ROBBERY SUSPECT KILLED IN SHOOT-OUT AT MALL IN OTAY; 2 OTHERS ARRESTED

April 4, 2011 (Otay Mesa)—Schools near the Otay Ranch Town Center were placed in lockdown briefly following a shooting at the mall. According to multiple sources, three people smashed a window at the Apple Store shortly before 6:45 a.m.

 

Chula Vista Police report that 40 rounds were fired in a shootout between a security guard and the suspects.

SHOTS FIRED AT LA MESA HOME

 

April 3, 2011 (La Mesa) -- At 8:05 a.m. La Mesa Police Department responded to multiple 911 calls of shots being fired in the 3900 block of Charles Street, La Mesa, near La Mesa Dale Elementary School.  (View map) When officers arrived they discovered approximately seven shots had been fired into a house. The targeted house was occupied, but no one was injured.

 

The suspect reportedly fled the scene driving a motorcycle.The unknown suspect was wearing a dark jacket and a blue helmet.

MAN STABBED OVER PET PEEVE

 

April 2, 2011 (San Diego) – A 74-year-old man assaulted his 64-year-old neighbor at 246 Euclid Street, San Diego over allegations that the victim’s dog was bothering the suspect’s kittens. According to San Diego Police Officer David Stafford, the suspect struck the victim in the face with a broomstick, then went home to retrieve a knife, returned and stabbed the victim in the stomach.

March 26, 2011 (Lyons Valley) – A teacher reports that she was approached by the driver of a bright yellow pick-up truck on Friday, March 25th at 9:30 a.m. while she was walking near the Lyons Valley Trading Post. She said the driver backed up and stopped, then asked “What color panties are you wearing?”

FATHER ARRESTED FOR SOLICITING MURDER OF DAUGHTER’S BOYFRIEND, A CONVICTED SEX OFFENDER

 

March 25, 2011 (La Mesa) La Mesa Police Department today arrested Domingos Oliveira, 50, of Spring Valley for soliciting the murder of his 19 year-old daughter’s boyfriend. Police were notified by the suspect’s daughter and boyfriend, after several posters had been placed on the campus of Grossmont College within the past two weeks.

March 22, 2011 (La Mesa)--At 2:35 p.m., three masked suspects smashed the I-Pod liosk display counter at Grossmont Center and stole  electronic items. The suspects are described as either black or Hispanic males.

POLICE SEEK SUSPECTS IN MAROON ULTIMA WHO ROBBED 95-YEAR-OLD WOMAN IN LA MESA

 

March 22, 2011 (La Mesa) – A witness who saw a 95-year-old woman knocked to the ground in a robbery this evening chased two suspects, La Mesa Police report. Police are seeking two suspects in a maroon 2000-2004 Nissan Ultima 4-door vehicle.

JAMUL RANCH HAND, A "FREQUENT BORDER CROSSER," ARRAIGNED IN VIOLENT DEATH OF WOMAN

March 18, 2011 (Jamul) -- Jamul resident Miguel Medina Sanchez, age 32, was arraigned yesterday afternoon in the murder of Maria Irma Palos De Rubio, who is also believed by officials to be a resident of Jamul.  Deputy District Attorney Claudia Grosso, the prosecutor assigned to the case, said  charges include a special circumstances charge of using a knife, which would add a year to Sanchez’ sentence if he is convicted.

 

Sanchez pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail pending appointment of a public defender, Sanchez said. The charges carry a possible sentence of 25 years to life in prison.

LT. BRUGOS, HEAD OF SHERIFF'S HOMICIDE UNIT, TO RETIRE MARCH 30

 

March 18, 2011 (San Diego) -- His phone rings in the middle of the night. He works around the clock tracking down killers. Now after 29 years on the job, Lt. Dennis Brugos is trading in his badge for the laid-back lifestyle of a retiree. His last day is on March 30th.

 

Lt. Brugos came face-to-face with many horrendous crimes during his time on the force. His work is difficult, but he says nothing is more gratifying than bringing a killer to justice and closure to families who have lost loved ones.

SWAT STANDOFF IN SANTEE & POSSIBLE EXPLOSIVE DEVICE IN LAKESIDE

 Update 11 a.m. - The SWAT situation has been resolved and one suspect has been taken into custody, Lt.  Walker has confirmed. No further information on the possible explosive device is yet available.

 

Update 3:15 p.m.  The suspect has been identified as Sean Arevalo, 31.

March 16, 2011 (Santee) A SWAT team is at the scene of a home on Chantilly Court a few blocks east of Woodside, where a caller said a man threatened violence. He has since barricaded himself in a back bedroom with his girlfriend, the Union-Tribune reports.

SHERIFF’S BULLETIN: MURDER SUSPECT “ARMED AND DANGEROUS”

 Update 6:30 p.m. - The suspect has been arrested after homicide investigators learned that he checked into Grossmont Hospital under an assumed name, Lorenzo Marcario.  He has been charged with murder.
 

March 14, 2011 (Jamul) – The San Diego Sheriff’s office has issued a special bulletin seeking public help to locate Miguel Medina Sanchez, 32, also known as Macario Lopez Merino.

He is wanted for the murder of Maria “Irma” Palos De Rubio, 44 at 15677 Lyons Valley Road on Saturday, March 12th.

CARJACKED VEHICLE FOUND IN LA MESA

 

March 13, 2011 (La Mesa) –A vehicle stolen in a violent carjacking in the Skyline area of San Diego last was recovered in La Mesa, San Diego Police report. The victim was invited to a party at a home on Shorewood Drive, but arrived to find no party. Instead, three black men in their early 20s approached the victim and one struck him in the back of the head with a handgun.

SAN DIEGO POLICE OFFICER ARRESTED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT OF MOTORIST AFTER MARDI GRAS PARTY

March 11, 2011 (San Diego) – San Diego Police Officer Anthony Arevalos has been arrested by the department’s sex crimes unit for sexual battery, false imprisonment and assault under the color of authority, San Diego Police announced today.

 

According to police, Arevelos stopped a female motorist, 32, as she was driving out of downtown after Tuesday night’s Mardi Gras revelry. She was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and the officer is accused of sexually battering the woman during the traffic stop.

PURSE-SNATCHER ZAPPED BY PASSERBY

March 11, 2011 (Rancho Penasquitos) – A would-be thief opened the car door and stole a purse from a woman, 53, in a parking lot outside Union Bank at 13200 Black Mountain Road yesterday, San Diego Police report. A witness armed with a taser chased the suspect and zapped him with the taser at Paseo Montalban and Twin Trails Drive.

THREE STABBED AT BAR IN LEMON GROVE

March 10, 2011 (Lemon Grove) –Three people were stabbed at the Sportsman’s Pub in Lemon Grove last night at 11:22 p.m. According to Sgt. William Hout with the San Diego Sheriff’s substation in Lemon Grove, two are in critical condition and the third victim is in serious condition.

March 7, 2011 (Lakeside) – Stanley Virgil Lloyd Jr. has been arrested in connection with the murder of Christopher Carioscia (Younghusband). San Diego Sheriff announces that Lloyd was taken into custody on March 4 at his residence at 1211 Quincy Canyon Road in Lakeside and has been booked into the San Diego Central Jail.

ROBBER FORCES EMPLOYEES INTO CLOSET IN YOGURT STORE HOLD-UP

 

March 7, 2011 (La Mesa) – A lone gunman made off with cold cash stolen from the Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt Store at 5640 Lake Murray Blvd. last night around 9:25. The suspect displayed a handgun and ordered two employees to empty the safe, then deposit the money in a paper bag. He then forced the employees into a closet and blocked the closet door with chairs.
