Second transient beating in a week raises questions in this rural town

May 9, 2012 (Ramona) – Sheriff’s deputies have arrested Tanner Hendee, 19, for the severe beating of a homeless man found unconscious yesterday morning.

This full moon shot was taken off Highway 79, between Santa Ysabel and Ramona, casting a golden halo as it rose.

Update:  May 4, 2012 -- The Sheriff’s Department announced on Wednesday night that a suspect had been arrested in the death of a 94-year-old Ramona woman.

Gary Allen Thomas, 63, a resident of the mobile home park where the victim lived, was arrested Wednesday afternoon, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Larry Nesbit said at a news conference at department headquarters.
 

February 27, 2012 (Ramona) – San Nicolas Island is best known as the setting for the novel Island of the Blue Dolphin.  But the isle in California’s Channel Islands was also used by the Navy—and a colony of wild cats believe to be descended from pets of naval personnel  were hunting wild birds and lizards, endangering native species including foxes. 

The Navy was prepared to kill all of the feral cats—until the Humane Society and the Fund for Animals stepped in. 

February 1, 2012 (Ramona) – The California Department of Fish and Game announced today that its wardens have arrested Jacob Thogmartin, 26, of Ramona on suspicion of setting a fire in a wildlife area filled with hunters early Saturday morning. The blaze, which extended into the night, charred 650 acres.

December 4, 2011 (Ramona) – A child who died Tuesday at his adoptive parents’ home in Ramona has been found to be a victim of homicide. The Medical Examiner’s office has ruled that 6-year-old Samuel Isaiah Dahlke died from complications of a head injury inflicted by his father at age two months.

County Reports 379 Pertussis Cases for Region

October 7, 2011 (Ramona)--An East County elementary school student was diagnosed with pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency officials said today. The 9-year-old, who was up-to-date with immunizations, attends Mt. Woodson Elementary School in the Ramona Unified School District.

August 27, 2011 (Ramona) 12:05 p.m. – A two-alarm fire is burning at the Craftstones company building at 505 Elm Street in Ramona. Incident Page Network reports chemical explosions have occurred and an evacuation of the area has just been ordered.

July 28, 2011 (Ramona) – It’s opening day at the Ramona Country Fair, where admission is free! This four-day event includes live entertainment including musical bands and the Ramona Idol contest, animals, livestock auction, crafts, food, and carnival rides.
