WILL POWER REPORT: SAVE THE U.S. POSTAL SERVICE

Nothing but the truth!

September 4, 2011 (San Diego)--Since Ben Franklin organized the U.S. Postal Service, the mailman has been a fixture in U.S. culture. But now the internet and private delivery service has forced the U.S. mail into a deficit. Thousands of small Post Offices are closed, and many rural communities are losing their common connecter of culture.

ON THE SILVER SCREEN: "BELLFLOWER" POWER

By Brian Lafferty

September 2, 2011 (San Diego) – Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali. David Lynch’s Eraserhead. Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead. Kevin Smith’s Clerks. What does Evan Glodell’s Bellflower have in common with all these films? They are all great movies shot on shoestring budgets.

MARKETING MATTERS: BUSINESS PLANNING—MORE CRITICAL THAN EVER

Tips and tricks for business success and growth

by Rama Beerfas

August 27, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) –  As I write this, the stock market is up.... sorry it's down... oops, I mean up.... no, it's down..... Yup, we are once again on that wacky roller coaster ride called, "The Economy."
While many businesses see this rock 'n' roll economy as a reason to cut back or eliminate marketing, I contend that is a knee-jerk response which will probably cause more problems than add to the bottom line.

HOME VIDEO HERALD: RIO

By Brian Lafferty

August 24, 2011 (San Diego) – The story is formulaic. The voice acting is rarely expressive. The musical numbers are largely forgettable except for one that will play on a loop in your head for a few days after you watch it. But nevermind. I sat in amazement while watching the Blu-Ray of Rio, not wanting to blink lest I miss a single frame of the animation.

HOME VIDEO HERALD: THE WOMAN ON THE BEACH

By Brian Lafferty

August 24, 2011 (San Diego) – The first five minutes of The Woman on the Beach are ominous, spellbinding and foreboding. Hanns Eisler’s booming and menacing score accompany the opening credits. The frame is backdropped with shots of the alluring beach and its forceful, foamy, and frothy tide. It’s a simple sequence of shots, but they’re chilling.

ON THE SILVER SCREEN: IN THE "DARK"

By Brian Lafferty

August 26, 2011 (San Diego) – The trouble with Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark isn’t so much that it’s not scary but that it’s boring. It ranks right up there with the original Amityville Horror (1979) as one of the dullest haunted house movies I’ve seen.

What are the latest actions and shenanigans by local politicians? Which Congressional members constituents are hosting an “empty chair” forum to substitute for a representative who isn’t coming home for town hall meetings? You’ve got questions, we’ve rustled up the answers!

WILL POWER REPORT: SOLAR JOBS

Nothing but the truth!

By Will Power

August 22, 2011 (San Diego)--How could the US put five million unskilled workers on the job in three months without raising taxes?  Simple- invest in a self-payout revolving fund which would underwrite putting solar panels on residential roofs all over America. Much of this labor is pretty much unskilled labor. You certainly don't need a college degree to haul solar panels onto a roof and screw them down.

WILL POWER REPORT: POVERTY IS NOT HEREDITARY

Nothing but the truth!

By Will Power

August 20, 2011 (San Diego)--In Eighteenth Century England, not only was poverty illegal but a few pounds of unpaid debt could get you sent to Australia or prison.  In those days, people actually thought poverty was hereditary, and that bad genes made you poor.

By Nancy Clement

August 18, 2011 (La Mesa) - Marli is about to start a new life adventure, pre-school, and she wanted some pretty, new clothes to wear. I was looking for a model for this column so we decided to team up. Since Marli is only 3½ years old, she needed some help to select clothes so we invited her Mom, Laura, to join us.

HOME VIDEO HERALD: THE DOUBLE MAN

By Brian Lafferty

August 17, 2011 (San Diego) – As a kid I remember watching The Parent Trap (1961). That was the Disney movie that starred Hayley Mills as two separated-at-birth twins. It was the film that probably didn’t invent it, but it certainly perfected the split screen technique that enabled the same actor to appear as separate characters in the same scene.

LIFE ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM: GREAT EXCITATIONS

By Brian Lafferty

August 17, 2011 (San Diego) -- I’m sure many of you are wondering about the absence of columns. I feel it’s required of me to explain.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I lost my mother last November from aggressive and invasive breast cancer. It was so aggressive that doctors believed that by the time she discovered something was wrong it was already too late.

ON THE SILVER SCREEN: WHISTLEBLOWIN' IN THE WIND

By Brian Lafferty

August 15, 2011 (San Diego) – The subject of sex trafficking is a serious one. Here in San Diego, teenage girls are taken by gangs and forced to become sex slaves. This subject deserves a better exploration and treatment than that seen in The Whistleblower, a film that is nothing more than 35-millimeter TV.

Nothing but the truth!

By Will Power

August 8, 2011 (San Diego)--The downgrading of the U.S. credit rating by Standard and Poor was thrown into limbo when a $2 trillion dollar math error was found in their calculations. I wish my bank would make the at kind of mistake on my bank account!

ON THE SILVER SCREEN: GOING APE

By Brian Lafferty

August 5, 2011 (San Diego) – The original Planet of the Apes was a thoughtful, intelligent commentary on the human race. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is an ambitious but mostly mindless prequel that is yet another entry in the “changing things that aren’t meant to be changed” genre.

  • Which liberal school board member may be living outside her San Diego district, making her potentially ineligible to serve?
