December 7, 2010 (San Diego) – Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) aims to load up ten buses with 8,000 pounds of food for hungry families this Saturday, December 11, at ten Vons stores across San Diego County.

“So many hard-working San Diegans, many of whom are members of our military, are struggling...Let’s all pitch in and share in the true holiday spirit,” said Councilwoman Marti Emerald at a kick-off for Metropolitan Transit System’s “Stuff the Bus” campaign today. “The need this year is unprecedented. Within the City of San Diego alone, requests for meals have increased by 72% over the past two years, with equally stunning numbers from other cities in San Diego County."

The economy, unemployment, and cost of living increases all contribute to the challenges facing families, said Emerald,  a long-time supporter of the San Diego Food Bank, helping families who are working to make ends meet. Last week, Emerald and her staff volunteered at the Food Bank’s warehouse, sorting canned and dry food items, checking closely for expiration dates and package conditions to make certain donated foods were safe to distribute.

MTS and San Diego Food Bank encourage the public to bring non-perishalbe foods in paper or canned packaging (no glass)

SD Food Bank Stuff a Bus

I worked the Rancho San Diego Von's Grocery. The people who shopped at this store were amazing. They asked what the program was, then went in to shop. Some came out with the 'bag' Von's already had made up for the food bank. Others purchased beans, rice, soup, canned veggies and fruit. People were donating at least one item, or more...which was wonderful..imagine if EVERYONE donated one item. Others, purchased bags of food and 'carts' of food, some gave cash. The holiday feeling was definitely alive at the Von's in Rancho San Diego.
