SPRING CARNIVAL AT LAKE JENNINGS APRIL 8

March 25, 2017 (Lakeside) – Thousands of eggs and 1,700 pounds of trout are among the attractions at the Spring Carnival Lake Jennings slated for Saturday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.   The event will also feature free paddle boating for the whole family, a Kid’s Pond for children under age 10, rainbow trout fishing and of course, an egg hunt.

ARMED ROBBERY SUSPECT TURNS SELF IN

March 21, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) -- A man suspected of robbing several East County businesses has turned himself in this afternoon and is now in custody, the Sheriff’s Department advises. The suspect is Randall Lee, 22, of Lakeside.

March 21, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) – Public help is sought to locate a suspect who robbed a Best Buy in La Mesa and Walmart stores in Santee and El Cajon. The suspect fire shots from a BB gun at store employees in two locations and threatened another employee with a hatchet before fleeing in a brown, four-door Buick.  County Crime Stoppers is offer a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of this suspected wanted for multiple robberies and assaults with a deadly weapon.

March 19, 2017 (San Diego's East County)--An estimated 900,000 gallon sewage spill was identified Friday, March 17th at Los Coches Creek near East Sierra Alta Way in unincorporated El Cajon, the County announced today. The sewage entered the creek after an underground sewer pipe became exposed and significantly damaged during the February 27th storms.

LAKESIDE'S RIVER PARK CONSERVANCY'S SAN DIEGO RIVER RUN 5K SET FOR MAY 6

March 13, 2017 (Lakeside)  - Lakeside's River Park Conservancy will hold the 10th annual San Diego River Run 5k on Saturday, May 6 from  8 a.m. to 11 a.m.at the Lakeside River Park trail.

The San Diego River Run 5k will be held in the morning this year, with on-site registration beginning at 7:00 am and the race starting at 8:00 am. The event will take place at Lakeside's River Park located at 10398 Channel Road, Lakeside.

STATE ROUTE 67 CLOSURES

March 13, 2017 (El Cajon/Lakeside) -- Caltrans construction crews will close one lane on northbound State Route 67 between Interstate 8 in El Cajon and Mapleview Street in Lakeside on Monday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The closure is needed to apply a fog seal – a protective pavement coating. The same closure will take place Tuesday if needed to complete the work.

March 5, 2017 (Lakeside) -- The hike at El Capitan County Preserve is considered one of the most rugged and physically challenging in San Diego County. The preserve’s trails run along a granite-ribbed ridgeline, which has stunning views of both the ocean and mountains. It can easily take up to six hours to complete this 12-mile out-and-back trek.

SANTEE CHICK-FIL-A HOSTING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ON MONDAY, MARCH 6TH

March 5, 2017 (Santee) – The Santee Chick-fil-A restaurant, 9418 Mission Gorge Road, Santee, will celebrate the start of its fifth year of serving customers on Monday evening, March 6. The public is invited to attend the celebration to be held between 5 and 8 p.m. Chick-fil-A officials said the celebration will recreate the experience when the store opened in late February 2013.

March 4, 2017 (San Diego) — Andy Parr has been appointed to serve as the County’s new Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Administrator.  Parr is best known in East County as the former Fire Chief of the Lakeside Fire Protection District, where he served for 37 years including during the Cedar and Witch Creek wildfires. Most recently he served as EMS/Fire Liaison for the County Health and Human Services Agency.

February 24, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) — A tow truck driver assisting a disabled vehicle on the right-hand shoulder of State Route 52 eastbound was hit by a Ford Explorer yesterday at 5:08 p.m.  and died at the scene.

Update February 25, 2017 :  The victim has been identified as Santee resident Andrea Daves, 33. Cause and manner of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

February 23, 2017 (Lakeside) – Sheriff’s deputies responded to a vehicle fire on a cul-de-sac in the 11200 block of Mast Boulevard in Lakeside last night shortly after 11 p.m.  They found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

February 16, 2017 (Lakeside) - The County cut the ribbon Thursday for the new Helix Flume Trail in Lakeside, and a group took an inaugural hike on the 0.8-mile path. It may be short in distance, but it’s long on history, with signs that share the story of early water transportation in San Diego. It also feature spectacular views of Lake Jennings and El Cajon Mountains.

The trailhead is located at 14003-14023 El Monte Road in Lakeside.

Crash raises concerns from flight school neighbors

February 14, 2017 (Ramona) – A Cessna registered to the American Aviation Academy and flying out of Gillespie Field as an instructor/student flight on Sunday crashed onto a mountainside in Ramona, killing Shaira Noor, 21, of Bangladesh. She had been training at the academy for nine months. Noor was in the backseat of the Cessna and was impaled by a tree on impact, which killed her instantly.

Two other occupants survived, climbing to an elevated area and using cell phones to call for help, the Sheriff’s department reports.
