June 13, 2024 (La Mesa) -- The third annual La Mesa Juneteenth and Friends celebration is being held this Sunday, June 16 at MacArthur Park, 4975 Memorial Drive in La Mesa. The La Mesa Juneteenth and Friends celebration is a grassroots community effort that brings the rich heritage, culture, and fun of a Juneteenth Jubilee to La Mesa, East County and the wider San Diego region.

JULY 4TH FIREWORKS AND FESTIVITIES IN EAST COUNTY

June 17, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) – In celebration of Independence Day on July 4, there are many Fourth of July festivities in San Diego's East County to choose from including the Lake Murray Fireworks and Music Fest, El Cajon’s fireworks and family fun activities, a family picnic and fireworks in Ramona, Santee Salutes with carnival games, music and fireworks, parades in Julian, Deerhorn Valley and Crest, Poway’s old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration complete with vintage train rides and more.

A RENAISSANCE EXPERIENCE IN SANTEE JUNE 15

June 4, 2024 (Santee) -- Step back in time at the Santee Renaissance Experience on June 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event, held at 9000 Edgemoor Drive in Santee, will feature real Medieval style battles, multiple guilds to entertain and educate you, plus pirates, fairies, mermaids and a Madrigal choir.

You can also try your hand at archery, shop for crafts and wares, enjoy exotic food vendors and a beer garden.

RUTH STERLING TO SERVE AS GRAND MARSHAL AT LA MESA FLAG DAY PARADE JUNE 8

June 3, 2024 (La Mesa) – La Mesa salutes Old Glory at the annual Flag Day Parade this Saturday. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and travels west through the La Mesa Village, along La Mesa Blvd. Former City Councilwoman Ruth Sterling will serve as Grand Marshal of the parade.

"Ruth's tireless dedication, from spearheading the parade's committee to establishing the Flag Day Parade endowment, exemplifies the essence of our celebration," the city's press release states.

Free ice cream will be provided by the La Mesa Community Relations and Veterans Commission at the Lookout in Legacy Park at the corner of La Mesa Blvd, 4th St. and Allison Ave.

VIEW THE COSMOS AT A STAR PARTY IN JULIAN ON JUNE 8

June 3, 2024 (Julian) – The Julian Dark Sky Network invites you to a star party this Saturday, June 8 starting at 8 p.m. at the Desert View Park/Inspiration Point (423 Inspiration Point Rd., Julian, two miles south of  Julian off Highway 79).  Bring binoculars and cameras, or use telescopes provided for people of all ages to view the cosmos,including deep nebulae, star clusters in the Milky Way, and a crescent moon.

Be sure to dress warm for this event, which is free to the public.

If so, you’ll savor the Chili Cook-Off event hosted by the Lemon Grove Lions Club and Lemon Grove Forward Club on Saturday, June 29 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will feature a chili tasting contest, where you get to help pick the best chili in Lemon Grove, music, cash bar, raffle and silent auction.

COUNTY’S FREE SUMMER MOVIES IN THE PARK SEASON STARTS FRIDAY AT WATERFRONT PARK; MANY SHOWINGS IN EAST COUNTY

May 21, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) -- The County of San Diego’s free “2024 Summer Movies in the Park” season starts at 6 p.m., Friday, May 24 with an event and sunset showing of the Oscar-winning blockbuster “Barbie” at the Waterfront Park downtown.  The full season includes more than 100 movies at dozens of parks countywide, including many in East County.

To celebrate the opening, there will be a variety of features and free fun for kids and families, including music, games, bounce houses, themed crafts, and other free activities. Although the movie starts at dusk, about 15 minutes past sunset, a host of free activities are expected to begin at 6 p.m. Make sure to bring a chair and blankets to cozy up for a night under the stars.

The first  East County showing will be on June 8, with “The Little Mermaid” 8 at Sweetwater Place Park Spring Valley and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” at Dos Picos County Park in Ramona.

East County and inland San Diego locations for future movies now through August include Campo, El Cajon, Escondido, Flinn Springs, Julian, La Mesa, Lakeside, Lemon Grove, Pine Valley, Potrero, Poway, Ramona, Rancho Bernardo, Rolando, San Carlos, Skyline, and Spring Valley.

OPEN RANCH AT HAZARD ALPACAS

April 4, 2024 (Jamul) -- Celebrate Springtime by visiting the alpacas. Open Ranch at Hazard Alpacas is Saturday and Sunday April 13 and 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 20781 Deerhorn Valley Road in Jamul, CA 91935.
 
Alpacas resemble llamas, but they are smaller in size. Alpacas were domesticated by the Andean people around 6,000 years ago. These animals served various purposes for their human companions, including providing wool, food, and fuel. Alpacas are part of a group called ungulates, which includes other hooved mammals like sheep and giraffes.

DESTINATION EAST COUNTY: EASTER EVENTS, WILDFLOWER WALKS AND MORE SPECIAL SPRING HAPPENINGS

March 17, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) – It’s a beautiful season to get outside and enjoy beautiful East County. This week’s Destination East County includes desert wildflower walks, Easter egg hunts in El Cajon and at Lake Jennings, Daffodil Days in Julian, a star party at Mission Trails, La Mesa’s Earth Day Fair, Cajon Classic Cruises, the Ramona Open Studios art tour, and a Lyle Lovett concert at the Magnolia.

EARTH DAY 2024 FAIR IN LA MESA

March 16, 2024 (La Mesa) -- The City of La Mesa is inviting residents, visitors, sponsors and vendors to join its family-friendly Earth Day Fair on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at MacArthur Park, 4900 Memorial Drive, La Mesa CA 91942. The festival is a celebration of the city’s commitment to environmental stewardship and a showcase of local businesses that offer eco-friendly products and services.
