GROCERY WORKERS VOTE OVERWHELMINGLY TO AUTHORIZE STRIKES AT RALPHS, ALBERTSONS, VONS AND PAVILIONS

March 27, 2022 (San Diego) -- United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Locals throughout California, together representing over 47,000 frontline food workers at Ralphs, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions, have announced an overwhelming membership vote to authorize union leadership to call for Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strikes should that become necessary. But it’s not yet inevitable that a strike will occur.

KAISER HEALTHCARE STRIKE TO START DEC. 16

December 4, 2019 (San Diego) - Kaiser Permanente’s 4,000 psychologists, therapists, social workers and other healthcare professionals are going on strike for five days starting Monday, Dec. 16 at more than 100 medical facilities across California.

80,000 WORKERS REACH TENTATIVE CONTRACT SETTLEMENT WITH KAISER, AVOIDING STRIKE

September 25, 2019 (San Diego) -- Kaiser Permanente and more than 80,000 union workers reached a tentative contract settlement early today.  If ratified by workers in the coming weeks, the four-year agreement between Kaiser and seven unions in six states plus the District of Columbia would avert a nationwide strike that was scheduled to begin on October 14th.

KAISER HEALTHCARE WORKERS LOCALLY VOTE TO JOIN NATIONWIDE STRIKE STARTING OCT. 14

September 23, 2019 (San Diego) -- Over 4,200 healthcare workers at Kaiser Permanente in San Diego, including 480 East County workers in El Cajon and La Mesa, will be joining a nationwide strike starting October 14th.  An overwhelming 98 percent of those members at Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Local 30 voted in support of the action.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RITE AID WORKERS VOTE TO AUTHORIZE STRIKE

July 31, 2018 (San Diego) – Union employees of Southern California Rite Aid pharmacy stores voted overwhelmingly yesterday to reject the company’s contract offer and authorize United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) to call a strike if union leaders deem it necessary.

SEIU ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT THAT AVERTS STRIKE AGAINST SAN DIEGO COUNTY

September 10, 2017 (San Diego) -- The union representing 10,000 San Diego County employees announced Saturday it has reached agreement on a new contract that will avert a potential strike.

“We now have an agreement that helps to close the wage gap for critical public servants like nurses and social workers which is an essential step in alleviating chronic staff turnover and significant short staffing of services to vulnerable residents of San Diego,” said David Garcias, president of the Service Employees International Union local 221.

SEIU COUNTY WORKERS CALL STRIKE FOR SEPT. 12-13

August 30, 2017 (San Diego) – Last night, Service Employees International Union Local 221 workers voted to hold a strike on September 12 and 13 over what the union contends are unfair labor practices. The union represents over 10,000 county employees in San Diego and Imperial Counties including public workers in county and city governments as well as school districts. Those workers include public health nurses, social services employees, librarians, clerical staff and more.

NURSES VOTE FOR STRIKE AT SHARP HEALTHCARE

November 15, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) – Nurses may soon be going out on strike at Sharp Healthcare facilities, including Grossmont Hospital here in East County.

The union, Sharp Professional Nurses Network, overwhelmingly approved a strike, with over 98% voting to strike unless wages are raised more than the 16 to 26 percent that Sharp has proposed over the next three years.

STRIKE, BOYCOTT ORGANIZED TO HELP BAJA FARMWORKERS

May 15, 2015 (San Quintin, Baja Mexico) – About 220 miles south of Tecate near the Pacific Coast is the rich agricultural region known as San Quintin.  Strawberry fields stretch as far as the eye can see.  Tomatoes, blackberries and raspberries bound for American grocery stores like Whole Foods and Vons are grown in this fertile valley.  The work is backbreaking, the weather is scorching and the workers work from sunup to sundown.  They earn around $5 per day – about the cost of a basket of strawberries at Whole Foods.

MENTAL HEALTHCARE WORKERS STRIKE AT KAISER, CITE DELAYS IN PATIENT CARE

January 12, 2015 (San Diego) – Mental healthcare clinicians marched in protest outside the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center on Zion Avenue in San Diego today, claiming Kaiser’s rules are unfair to them and their patients. It’s part of a statewide,week-long strike at over 65 locations --the largest walk-out of mental health workers in the nation, 10 News reports.
