VALENTINES WEEKEND KUMEYAAY LAKES POETRY CAMPOUT AT MISSION TRAILS FEB. 13-15

 

 

February 3, 2015 (San Diego)--San Diego's Mission Trails Regional Park announces a three-day Kumeyaay Lakes Poetry Campout  in February with Poet Jim Moreno--complete with love-themed workshops for romantics at heart.

The Valentines Day Weekend (Feb. 13-15) will blend writing time for beginning to seasoned poets in four structured writing workshops. Star gazing with the San Diego Astronomy Association, a guided nature walk, and a Saturday sunset open mic for camping poets and community at the Kumeyaay Lake amphitheater will be blended with Valentine theme poetry events.

SANTEE COMMUNITY CHORUS IN CONCERT JAN. 18 AT MISSION TRAILS

 

December 20, 2014 (Santee) -- The Santee Community Chorus returns to the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitors Center Auditorium on Sunday, Jan 18, 2015 at 3 p.m.  The chorus is a volunteer, non-religious chorus that is open to all.

COWLES MTN. WINTER SOLSTICE WALKS DEC. 20-22

 

December 15, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) - The Mission Trails Regional Park Trail Guides will lead pre-dawn hikes to the area of the solstice observatory on Cowles Mountain on the 20th and 22nd of December. The Canyoneers of the San Diego Natural History Museum will lead the hike on the 21st.

Even if you’ve seen these birds many times before, you can’t wait to see another one. The Spotted Towhee’s jet-black head with contrasting white and brown and red eyes will immediately catch your attention.

ART IN THE PARK AT MISSION TRAILS OCT. 11 TO FEATURE AWARD-WINNING ARTWORK, CRAFT BREWS, WINE, MUSIC AND STARGAZING

 

October 4, 2014 (Mission Trails) – Artworks by over 43 award-winning artists depicting nature will be on display at Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation’s annual Art in the Park event on October 11th from 6-9 p.m., including 125 works for sale.  Art aficionados can also savor craft beers and premium wines, as well as hors d’hoeuvres, Rita’s Italian Ice and Xocai chocolates. In addition, guests can enjoy  San Diego Native American flute music and Circa and Musa’s vibrational tones,.as well as astronomy viewing with telescopes provided by the San Diego Astronomy Association.

KUMEYAAY LAKE POETRY CAMPOUT OCT. 10-12 AT MISSION TRAILS

 

September 29, 2014 (San Diego) –Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation President  Jay Wilson announces the Kumeyaay Lake Poetry Campout, a three day, family-friendly poetry workshop weekend at Mission Trails Regional Park's Kumeyaay Lake Campgrounds (Two Father Junipero Serra Trail, San Diego, CA, 92119). The event is open to for 12 participants (ages 10 years old to adult, three camp sites can be reserved), Friday, October 10, Saturday, October 11, and Sunday, October 12, 2014, with check in time Friday, October 11, 2014, at 5:00 p.m.

QUAIL BRUSH POWER PLANT APPLICATION WITHDRAWN

September 12, 2014 (San Diego) – There won’t be a gas-fired power plant built next to Mission Trails Regional Park. Plans for the controversial project have been withdrawn at the request of a letter sent by Quail Brush GENCO LLC, the project applicant, to the California Energy Commission on September 12.

The project had faced strong opposition including city councils of both Santee and San Diego, the Santee School District, environmental groups and residents.

NOTED GUITARIST FRED BENEDETTI PERFORMS FREE CONCERT AT MISSION TRAILS ON AUGUST 17

 

July 31, 2014 (San Diego)--Flamenco, jazz, classical and popular music will be performed in free a guitar concert by noted musician Fred Benedetti on Saturday, August 17 at 3 p.m. in the Mission Trails Regional Park visitor center theater.   This acclaimed entertainer plays with several local bands. He is also a full-time music professor at Grossmont College, where he heads up the guitar studies program, and serves as chair of the guitar program at San Diego State University.  He has toured in the U.S. Europe, Canada, Mexico and Taiwan. Locally, Benedetti has performed with the San Diego Symphony, the San Diego Opera, Starlight Opera, American Ballet Company,  and the Old Globe Theatre, plus he has shared the stage with such musical luminaries as opera star Luciano Pavarotti and jazz artist Dave Brubeck.

July 20, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – The next musical performance at Mission Trails Regional Park will feature vocalist and recording artist Lillian Palmer on August 3 from 3 to 4 p.m.  Palmer performed in nightclubs and cabarets in Italy before returning home to Southern California.

SUMMER TWILIGHT WALKS AT MISSION TRAILS

 

June 26, 2014 (Mission Trails)—You’re invited to join Mission Trails Regional Park guides this summer for free Saturday evening guided walks in the park to learn about changes that occur as the sun goes down.  These walks last approximately an hour and a half and start from the parking lot across from Kumeyaay Campground on July 19 at 7:15 p.m.August 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.

June 20, 2014 (San Diego)--Rady Children’s Hospital is staging a “Safe Kids Day” program on Saturday, June 21, at the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center from 9:30 to 2:00.  The emphasis is to keep children safe while exploring and enjoying the outdoors.  All activities will take place at the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center.

ENERGY COMMISSION EXTENDS QUAIL BRUSH SUSPENSION UNTIL 2015

April 27, 2014 (San Diego)--The California Energy Commission has granted a request from Cogentrix for a second one-year suspension of an application for the controversial Quail Brush gas-fired power plant proposed near Mission Trails Regional Park. That means the proposal remains alive, despite overwhelming community opposition.

Opponents of the project had urged the Commission to let the proposal die by denying Cogentrix’s request to extend the original suspension that expired in April.  Despite a barrage of protest comments, the Commission decided to extend the suspension until April 15, 2015.

February 6, 2014 (San Diego)--The Native American Flute Players will present an event at Mission Trails Regional Park at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 9.

The San Diego Native American Flute Players honor Native American music, and on the second Sunday of each month (except in June), they hold a "Flute Circle" in the Visitor Center's outdoor amphitheater from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

CITY APPLIES FOR SCENIC HIGHWAY DESIGNATION FOR STATE ROUTE 52

January 14, 2014 (San Diego) – State Route Highway 52 travels through Mission Gorge and Santee, offering motorists views of the San Diego River and Mission Trails Regional Park.  Now the City of San Diego is applying for Scenic Highway designation from the state for  the section of  State Route 52 from Santo Road to Mast Boulevard, through Mission Trails Regional Park.

The measure passed unanimously.  Van Collinsworth at Preserve Wild Santee urges the public to send letters of support for recognizing the scenic value of these resources. Letters should be received by February 28 and may be sent to:

ORION RISING, ANDROMEDA GALAZY ON HIGH: STAR PARTY AT MISSION TRAILS JANUARY 11

The Moon is past First Quarter and waxing. Jupiter will be rising in the Eastern sky. Up for viewing are The Pleiades (Seven Sisters), the Double Cluster in Perseus, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) high overhead as well as the great Orion Nebula rising in the East.

STAR PARTY AT MISSION TRAILS NOVEMBER 16

 

November 14, 2013 (San Diego) -- Join Mission Trails Regional Park's resident stargazer, George Vargas, for a "star party" on Saturday November 16 from 5 to 8 p.m.  Meet at the far end of the Kumeyaay Campground day use parking lot, where a telescope will be available to veiw the nighttime sky. 

The moon will be one day short of being Full so it will contribute to light pollution. The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) and its companion M32 are well in position for viewing. Light from these two objects takes about 2.5 – 2.9 million years to reach Earth. The Double Cluster in Perseus will also be visible be in the northeastern sky.

October 16, 2013 (San Diego's East County ) -- The Third Annual Family Friendly Halloween Spooktacular will be presented by renowned storytellers Cynthia Griffin and Mary Holma from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Mission Trails Regional Park Amphitheater. Children are encouraged to come in costume, and each child will receive a bag of Halloween treats.

ASTRONOMY EXPERT SPEAKS AT MISSION TRAILS SEPT. 18

 

September 18, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – The San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA) Program Meeting will be held at the Mission Trails Regional Park today. The Program meeting begins at 7:00 PM.

Dennis Mammana will be lecturing on the The Seven Wonders of Our Universe. For more than three decades, Dennis Mammana has delivered the wonder and mystery of the cosmos to stargazers the world over. The lecture will run an hour, and is accompanied by the photography of noted astro photographers and astronomers.
