May 26, 2015 (San Diego’s East County)--This week’s Destination East County includes a classical guitar concert, a living legends art and photo exhibit, a Flag Day Parade, a fiddle picking contest, women’s health fair and more. Plus we’ll also have a preview of coming attractions including the Taste of La Mesa, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, and the Julian Dance and Back Country Barbecue.  So stay tuned for all of these events and much, much more!

February 3, 2015 (San Diego)--San Diego's Mission Trails Regional Park announces a three-day Kumeyaay Lakes Poetry Campout  in February with Poet Jim Moreno--complete with love-themed workshops for romantics at heart.

The Valentines Day Weekend (Feb. 13-15) will blend writing time for beginning to seasoned poets in four structured writing workshops. Star gazing with the San Diego Astronomy Association, a guided nature walk, and a Saturday sunset open mic for camping poets and community at the Kumeyaay Lake amphitheater will be blended with Valentine theme poetry events.

January 20, 2015 (San Diego’s East County)--This week’s Destination East County has events ranging from a Sock Monkeys concert at a winetasting room in La Mesa to an art show and family nature walk at Mission Trails Regional Park. Plus we’ll have a preview of coming attractions including Cupids and Canines pet adoption event at Grossmont Center to Circus Vargas bringing its big-top show to El Cajon. December 15, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) - The Mission Trails Regional Park Trail Guides will lead pre-dawn hikes to the area of the solstice observatory on Cowles Mountain on the 20th and 22nd of December. The Canyoneers of the San Diego Natural History Museum will lead the hike on the 21st.

October 4, 2014 (Mission Trails) – Artworks by over 43 award-winning artists depicting nature will be on display at Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation’s annual Art in the Park event on October 11^th from 6-9 p.m., including 125 works for sale.  Art aficionados can also savor craft beers and premium wines, as well as hors d’hoeuvres, Rita’s Italian Ice and Xocai chocolates. In addition, guests can enjoy  San Diego Native American flute music and Circa and Musa’s vibrational tones,.as well as astronomy viewing with telescopes provided by the San Diego Astronomy Association.

September 12, 2014 (San Diego) – There won’t be a gas-fired power plant built next to Mission Trails Regional Park. Plans for the controversial project have been withdrawn at the request of a letter sent by Quail Brush GENCO LLC, the project applicant, to the California Energy Commission on September 12.

The project had faced strong opposition including city councils of both Santee and San Diego, the Santee School District, environmental groups and residents. 

Preserve Wild Santee posted the following message on its Facebook page upon hearing the news:

July 31, 2014 (San Diego)--Flamenco, jazz, classical and popular music will be performed in free a guitar concert by noted musician Fred Benedetti on Saturday, August 17 at 3 p.m. in the Mission Trails Regional Park visitor center theater.   This acclaimed entertainer plays with several local bands. He is also a full-time music professor at Grossmont College, where he heads up the guitar studies program, and serves as chair of the guitar program at San Diego State University.  He has toured in the U.S. Europe, Canada, Mexico and Taiwan. Locally, Benedetti has performed with the San Diego Symphony, the San Diego Opera, Starlight Opera, American Ballet Company,  and the Old Globe Theatre, plus he has shared the stage with such musical luminaries as opera star Luciano Pavarotti and jazz artist Dave Brubeck.

June 26, 2014 (Mission Trails)—You’re invited to join Mission Trails Regional Park guides this summer for free Saturday evening guided walks in the park to learn about changes that occur as the sun goes down.  These walks last approximately an hour and a half and start from the parking lot across from Kumeyaay Campground on July 19 at 7:15 p.m.,  August 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 20 at 6 p.m.

On Saturday July 5^th, KNSJ invites you to our community radio station’s first anniversary from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the beautiful Mission Trails Regional Park visitors center.

Come mix and mingle with our radio hosts and celebrity guests in a spectacular natural setting, enjoy live music, Native American flute players, delicious food and drinks, stargazing, museum, no host bar, two stages with comedy acts and musical entertainment.

April 23, 2014 (San Diego’s East County) – Last week, we reported that applicants for the controversial gas-fired Quail Brush Power plant proposal asked the California Energy Commission to extend a suspension for another year and keep alive the potential to revive the project proposed next to Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diegio and schools in Santee.

March 14, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - The MRC Company "Smart Technology Solutions" is the largest technology and services company specializing in workflow solutions and office systems. They are currently running a contest to provide the winning 501 I(3) nonprofit corporation with up to a $15,000 technology upgrade for their office. The winner will be decided by the number of votes cast on-line through March 17.

January 14, 2014 (San Diego) – State Route Highway 52 travels through Mission Gorge and Santee, offering motorists views of the San Diego River and Mission Trails Regional Park.  Now the City of San Diego is applying for Scenic Highway designation from the state for  the section of  State Route 52 from Santo Road to Mast Boulevard, through Mission Trails Regional Park.

The measure passed unanimously.  Van Collinsworth at Preserve Wild Santee urges the public to send letters of support for recognizing the scenic value of these resources. Letters should be received by February 28 and may be sent to:

December 28, 2013 (San Diego) - The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation (MTRP) is pleased to present an exhibition featuring seven award winning artists who work in various mediums.  The exhibit will be on display in the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center Art Gallery from January 4 - 31, 2014.  The public is cordially invited to a reception in honor of the artists on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

November 18, 2013 (San Diego) – The Mission Trails Regional Park Foundation (MTRP) is pleased to present an exhibition featuring three award winning photographers: Debbie Beals, Darci Hook, and Janice Roudebush.

This photography exhibit, "Elements: Three Perspectives on Nature," will be on display in the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center Art Gallery November 16 through December 13, 2013. The public is cordially invited to a reception in honor of the artists on Sunday, November 24, 2013 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm.

October 16, 2013 (San Diego's East County ) -- The Third Annual Family Friendly Halloween Spooktacular will be presented by renowned storytellers Cynthia Griffin and Mary Holma from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Mission Trails Regional Park Amphitheater. Children are encouraged to come in costume, and each child will receive a bag of Halloween treats.
