March 8, 2009 (La Mesa) — Luau foods, seashell leis, and other touches of the tropics greeted guests at the grand opening of Coconuts Salon & Day Spa in La Mesa this weekend. Located behind the Brigantine Restaurant at 9340 Fuerte Drive, the salon formerly known as Transformations has been transformed into a tropical-themed motif by new owners Bob Lyon and Joey Atkins. "My wife, Deedee, and I came up with the name," said Lyon, sporting a Hawaiian shirt. "In the spirit of Hawaii, we created a waterfall and a whole Hawaiian motif."

will appear as a panelist at a Feb. 27 conference at Thomas Jefferson School
of Law titled "Confronting Domestic Violence Head-On." (Click

of serious injury to women in the U.S. According to the American Psychiatric
Association, one in five women has been raped by an intimate partner. Even
more have suffered emotional abuse. Men can also be domestic abuse
victims, though such cases are less common. Below is Hedlun's story,
along with a list of warning signs for abuse--and where to get help.

February 10, 2009 (San Diego's East County) — When
people ask how my husband and I met, they are generally surprised to
learn that we met on the Internet. Some people are even shocked. I am
not sure why.
When my marriage of 22 years ended in divorce and I was in my early 50s
my first thought was that my life was over--NOT! I realized soon that it
had only just begun in many ways. I decided I would no longer be afraid
of life, but I would embrace it and enjoy it. The first thing I did was
get a pedicure--I know, rather mundane, but I had never had one before.
The second thing I did was change my hair color-- just a few streaks nothing
too dramatic--after all I was a principal of an elementary school! The
third thing I did was sign up for an Internet dating service. I had fun
each day exploring the biographies of men and getting excited when someone
wrote to me. It was a bit scary at first, yet it was also exhilarating
and liberating. I would enjoy my friends, but I was going to get right
back into the saddle with men--so to speak!
A Man’s Perspective
By Terry Walsh
Searching, and finding, a mate on the Internet can be a rewarding and
successful activity. Once the initial learning process is completed
and comfort is achieved with the Internet's modern form of communication,
one can get right at finding the right mate. Outdated methods of visiting
bars, joining clubs and mining work, school and church provide only a
limited universe from which to meet and develop relationships. The
Internet is the answer for today's climate of not only a fast- paced
life, but one with desired quality as well.

To commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2009, President-elect Obama has created a national day of service and is calling on all Americans to renew America together.
This call to service is extended to every American across the country, regardless of political party affiliation, to reignite our national spirit of volunteerism and community service not only on a single day - January 19, 2009 - but continuing commitment to our local communities throughout the year. Renew America Together is not just about stepping up to serve for a single day, but about a continued commitment to our communities.

January 1, 2009 (San Diego's East County)--For better or worse, these are the East County people who made headlines in 2008. Some are famous--elected officials and sports stars. Others are unsung heroes and ordinary citizens who found themselves in extraordinary situations, battling foes ranging from cancer to large-scale developments in their communities. Some have aspired to amazing feats, such as a young paraplegic athlete striving to join an Antarctic expedition. We've included heroes with heartwarming tales--and a few local leaders who made headlines for less-than-heroic deeds.

December 15, 2008 (La Mesa) — It was a leap
of faith to host a VIP holiday party as the upstart publisher in town. Being
a big believer in the "if you build it, they will come" philosophy, however,

More than 70 VIP guests attended our holiday soiree, where dozens of

now, a party guest list that reads like a Who's Who of East County!
