SAN DIEGO JEWISH ACADEMY ATTEMPTS TO BREAK A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD WHILE SUPPORTING THE SAN DIEGO HOMELESS COMMUNITY

March 26, 2019 (San Diego) -- Students, faculty and parents from the San Diego Jewish Academy will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most sandwiches assembled in three minutes on April 1, and will donate the assembled sandwiches to San Diego’s Alpha Project, an organization dedicated to helping the homeless change their lives and achieve self-sufficiency.

12.7% OF COUNTY’S HOMELESS ARE IN EAST COUNTY, WHERE MOST REMAIN UNSHELTERED

May 21, 2018 (San Diego’s East County) – The 2018 Point in Time “We All Count” report on homelessness in our region reveals that 12.7% of San Diego County’s homeless population is in East County.  While El Cajon has made progress toward sheltering its homeless people, no such progress has been made in the unincorporated areas or most East County cities.

HOMELESS COUNT FINDS 6 PERCENT DROP REGIONWIDE

May 17, 2018 (San Diego) --The number of homeless people in San Diego County dropped by 6 percent from last year, according to the 2018 Point-in-Time Count.  The number of homeless who are unsheltered fell even further, dropping 11 percent.

PUBLIC COMMENTS NEEDED BY SEPT. 23 TO HELP SAN DIEGO GET MORE FEDERAL FUNDS FOR HOMELESS

August 29, 2016 (San Diego) - On August 10, 2016, Congressman Scott Peters (D-San Diego), along with city and county officials, met to discuss the issue of homelessness in San Diego.  The key question is how funding by the U.S. Department of Housing and Development (HUD) can be updated so that San Diego gets its fair share of money each year.  A recent Voice of San Diego report found that despite having the nation’s third largest homeless population, San Diego gets less than many other cities with fewer homeless people.

June 21, 2016 (San Diego) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors today accepted the Project One for All implementation plan that will provide people who are homeless and have serious mental illness access to a coordinated range of services, including housing and health care.

EL CAJON POLICE PARTNERING WITH EAST COUNTY AGENCIES TO HELP REDUCE HOMELESSNESS

June 18, 2016 (El Cajon) -- During Tuesday’s City Council meeting, El Cajon Police Chief Jeff Davis addressed the City Council to make them aware of the police department’s new partnership with other East County agencies for a homeless outreach program. The actions come after the County Grand Jury issued a report recommending East County cities take actions to improve help for the homeless, as ECM reported earlier this week.

GRAND JURY REPORT SLAMS EAST COUNTY CITIES' “LACK OF RESPONSE TO HOMELESSNESS”

June 13, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) – The San Diego County Grand Jury has issued a report critical of four cities in East County for failing to provide adequately for the needs of homeless people, including failing to apply for federal funds available for that purpose. The Grand Jury report, titled “East County Cities’ Lack of Response to Homelessness,” also made recommendations to improve the situation.
