February 12, 2019 (La Mesa) – “Toby is on the hunt for a Valentine date. The rumor is that he has his eye on a cute velociraptor,” says Jeff Phair, developer of La Mesa Summit Estates.

Phair and his wife purchased the whimsical sculptor last August and installed it at the site of the future residential project in September. Since then, Toby the T-Rex has been spotted garbed in a variety of holiday wear, also attracting artwork created by local children.

January 22, 2019 (San Diego) — Kumeyaay women were among the groups participating in the 2019 San Diego Women’s March and program at Waterfront Park.

Virginia Christman, Kumeyaay elder and cultural educator from Viejas, offered a traditional blessing and bird song at the start of the program. Christman has also served over a decade on the Viejas Tribal Council, including a term as Vice Chairperson.

November 1, 2018 (El Cajon) - El Cajon's Trunk Or Treat on Halloween night made a solid return this year, with large crowds of people attending and happy kids collecting lots of candy.

Many styles of costumes were evident, worn by children and adults alike. From cute to scary, with many showing very creative skills in how they were designed and put together.

October 31, 2018 (Mount Laguna) – After putting out water for birds,  Mount Laguna resident Dave Hogan spotted an unexpected sight:  a bobcat hunting birds.  He sent these photos, and this message: “Please help protect our wild animal neighbors by not using rodent poison, keeping vulnerable pets indoors and livestock in secure pens, and not using the Wildlife Services agency to kill predators like this lovely bobcat.

October 18, 2018 (El Cajon) -- Anyone missing a tortoise? Heartland Paramedics from American Medical Response (AM) came across a rather interesting patient “slowly” traveling down the sidewalks of El Cajon near Emerald and Washington Streets earlier today. Possibly suffering from a little "shell shock," it was transported to El Cajon Animal Shelter to be checked out and held until the owner can stop by and claim it.

Shelter hours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  All in a day’s work!

He writes, “Many people in the East County have noticed this beautiful flag flying in our night sky.  I see it from my backyard (1st picture) and had to go see where it was coming from.  I took my dog for a walk and we tracked it down to Mauzy Heating, Air & Solar on Bond Ave (2nd picture) in El Cajon.  It fills my heart with pride when I see it and thought you might want to share it and give Mauzy a shout out.  I put a thank you note on their door and posted both pictures on Facebook.

July 29, 2018 (Santee) - The Santee Fire Department posted this photo of a red diamondback on Facebook, with a timely message:  “ Santee Fire Department is an “all hazards” fire department, which means we wrangle snakes from time to time! This little fella is one of the bigger snakes we’ve captured. Don’t put your hands or feet where you can’t see, and always look before stepping over doorsteps, snakes like to crawl along the sides of buildings.”

May 20, 2018 (Jamul) – At the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge in Jamul, talented wildlife photographer Debbie Ekhaml has been documenting a nest with four Great Horned Owls fledglings.

“Four is really amazing,” she says, adding that the species normally has two or three offspring at a time.

These large, nocturnal birds are found across our regional and can be identified by the tufts of feathers resembling horns. You may hear their distinctive “Hoo -H-Hoo” call after dark.

April 13, 2018 (San Diego’s East County) – Greg Dunne, our Bird Talk columnist, sent us this photo of an Osprey nest at Lake Murray.  He says he’s taken hundreds of photos of this nest and Ospreys in it over the past ten years.

“It's about 50' up in the air and you pass right under it on the walking path, so you can never see the chicks inside until they are grown,” he adds. “But this last Tuesday I got this little guy.”

January 22, 2018 (Lake Jennings) – I went to Lake Jennings today hoping to see bald eagles recently spotted there. Instead, I found an osprey perched atop a eucalyptus tree. Nearby, a migratory white pelican in the lake was quickly joined by another pelican swooping in for a landing; I later saw several more.

January 7, 2018 (Spring Valley) – San Miguel Fire Department captured this dramatic photo of a firefighter battling a trash truck fire in the 3500 block of Sweetwater Spring Boulevard in Spring Valley on January 3rd.

The truck dumped its load in a parking lot to save the truck from burning.

October 3, 2017 (El Cajon) – This beautiful sculpture, with its gracefully flowing curves, sits unassumingly yet boldly in front of the San Diego County courthouse entry area in El Cajon at 250 East Main street.

Created from stainless steel with a highly polished, reflecting surface, one can certainly be mesmerized by looking skyward as it towers 31 feet above the viewer.

July 11, 2017 (Flinn Springs) – “I watched this whole fire play out, since we live so close,” Renee Owens wrote in an email to ECM. “It’s not the first fire I have ever witnessed, but this one got so hot and moved so quickly at first it was downright scary. You could hear the trees pop and explode, the fire reached 60 foot flames on some of the steep slopes, and stopped right at the I-8 just a couple hundred feet from a huge propane storage tank. It traveled frighteningly fast at first, but once the air tankers and helicopters showed up - combined with hitting some steep and sparsely vegetated cliff faces - they managed to tamp it down pretty quickly despite the heat and wind. It came within a couple hundred feet of houses near Dunbar lane. Watching it go from enormously hot and fast to under control was seriously impressive, and we owe some major thanks to the pilots on this one.”

As of 10 p.m. tonight, the fire is 10% contained and has burned over 400 acres.  All roads have been reopened.
