This biologically diverse 3,541 acre preserve also supports 23 butterfly species, 21 reptile species, six types of amphibians, 37 mammals, over 100 types of birds, and 408 plant species. You can visit on your own, or join a docent-led guided excursion.

COYOTE WITH HEAD STUCK IN BUCKET IS RESCUED FROM FLOODED FIELD

January 24, 2024 (San Diego) -- A not-so-wily coyote is recovering at San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center after being rescued from a flooded field full of debris with a bucket stuck on his head.

December 29, 2021 (Ramona) – Scott Lagace snapped a series of images of a coyote pouncing on a gopher mound in the Ramona Grasslands Preserve this week, but the prey eluded capture, much to the coyote’s consternation.

The wily coyote earlier camouflaged itself among a herd of cattle – apparently oblivious to the “no trespassing” sign posted.

August 5, 2019 (Jamul) - This was the breeding male of a Jamul coyote pack. The first image was taken before he ingested most likely a poisoned rodent, based on his symptoms. He had already recovered from mange, also most likely due to rodenticide poisoning. The second is a picture of him the afternoon before he died, and one of his last attempts at standing.

But recent coyote sightings are often due to things that we, as residents of the surrounding communities, are doing to attract them into our neighborhoods – like leaving dog food and cat food outside.

January 17, 2017 (Lakeside) -- Not all coyotes are a nuisance, in fact where there is open land they can thrive without ever setting paw in your yard. If a habitat has all the right elements--grasses, mice, gopher, rabbits and a few other rodent types--the coyote has all it needs to live long and bear young.

CONNECTING CHILDREN WITH NATURE: EXPLORE MISSION TRAILS DAY MAY 19

 
May 15, 2012 (San Diego) -- The 10th annual Explore Mission Trails Day, a celebration highlighting everything Mission Trails Regional Park has to offer, will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2012. Most activities will be between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Visitor and Interpretive Center and the Equestrian Staging Area. The 2012 event, Connecting Children with Nature, will feature free guided nature walks, talks and programs throughout the park, including live animals, and special programs for children.

COYOTE ATTACKS 12-YEAR-OLD IN SPRING VALLEY

 

Recent coyote attacks on large dogs in East County also reported; area residents suggest packs are becoming more aggressive

June 28, 2010 (Spring Valley) – A coyote attacked a 12-year-old girl shortly before 9:30 this evening at 9119 Jamacha Road in Spring Valley, just one block from the Spring Valley Library and La Presa Middle School, Heartland Dispatch and the San Diego Sheriff's office have confirmed.
