GROCERY STRIKE AVERTED

August 9, 2016 (San Diego) – Grocery workers voted Monday to accept the latest contract proposal affecting employees at Ralphs, Vons, Albertsons, Pavilions and Safeway supermarkets across southern California.

GROCERY WORKERS VOTE “OVERWHELMINGLY” TO STRIKE

June 23, 2016 (San Diego) – Members of the United Food & Commercial Workers Union voted “overwhelmingly” for a strike Monday night, UFCW president Mickey Kasperian announced Tuesday.  No date for the strike has been set as yet by the union, which represents about 47,000 grocery workers across Southern California. 

If a settlement is not reached, the strike could affect Ralphs,Albertson’s, Vons, Safeway and Pavilion stores.

The grocery chains have sought to cut holiday pay, reduce corporate contributions to pension funds, and make new employees work longer before getting raises.

HAGGEN FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY TO REORGANIZE AROUND FEWER STORES, PROFITABLE LOCATIONS

September 14, 2015 (San Diego’s East County)—Haggen, a major West Coast regional grocer, has announced plans to reorganize around its core profitable stores by filing voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company has received commitments for up to $215 million in debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing from its existing lenders to maintain operations and the flow of merchandise to its stores during the sale process.

PEANUT AND ALMOND BUTTERS RECALLED DUE TO SALMONELLA

August 20, 2014 (San Diego’s East County)--Before you pack up a peanut butter sandwich for your children’s school lunches, check the labels.

There is a recall of several brands of peanut butters and almond butters sold at Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Safeway which own Vons, Kroger’s which owns Ralph and Food 4 Less, and others.

EAST COUNTY VONS STORE NAMED TOP FUNDRAISER BY EASTER SEALS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

 Santee Store Yields Top Total in Charity Campaign for People with Disabilities 

 

June 28, 2011 (Santee) -- The Santee Vons store was named a top fundraising store by Easter Seals during Safeway Inc.’s charity campaign to benefit people with disabilities in April.  The Santee store achieved the highest fundraising total in its district.
