December 30, 2020 (San Diego’s East County) -- They include the famous and infamous-- community and business leaders, a sports star, a youth sports coach, a wildlife expert, a hiking leader, foster parent advocate, loving parents and children, a civil rights leader and a notorious racist who once ran for Congress. They died of causes ranging from COVID-19 to other illnesses, accidents and  murder.  These are the people with strong ties in San Diego’s inland region, who passed on in 2020.

PASSAGES: MTS CHIEF BILL BURKE PASSES AWAY

 

June 28, 2015 (San Diego)--Bill Burke, the chief of police for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), passed away today of unknown causes. He was 68 years old. Burke started with MTS in 2001, was promoted to director of security in 2004 and became its first chief of police in 2011. Prior to working with MTS, Burke was the chief of police for the Cook County Sheriff’s Department in Chicago, Ill.

TROLLEY AND BUS RIDERSHIP BREAKS A RECORD

 

August 19, 2014 (San Diego) - More than 95 million trips were taken on local trolleys and busses over the past year, the Metropolitan Transit System, or MTS, has announced. That’s an 11.5 percent increase from the 85 million riders in fiscal year 2013.

MTS DEDICATES SDSU TROLLEY STATION TO LEON WILLIAMS

MTS Board Chair Emeritus and SDSU Alum was critical in bringing Trolley to San Diego State

 
 
July 2, 2011 (San Diego) -- With more than 100 friends, family, and elected officials looking on, the Metropolitan Transit System dedicated the San Diego State University Trolley Station to Leon Williams on Wednesday, June 29, 2011. The dedication honors Leon Williams for his tireless support of public transit and more than 30 years of public service.
