September 10, 2013 (La Mesa) – The La Mesa Historical Society will continue it free History Roundtable Series for 2013 with a presentation on the architectural heritage of La Mesa titled “Emmor Brooke Weaver: Pioneer Architect”.  The presentation featuring Alexander D. Bevil, a historian with California State Parks, will be held on September 28 at 10 a.m. at Grossmont Healthcare District Auditorium, 9001 Wakarusa Drive, La Mesa.

August 28, 2013 (Lemon Grove) – The Lemon Grove Historical Society hosts its Big Lee House Hawaiian Luau on September 14 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. under the stars and twinkling lights of the Gazebo Courtyard at the H. Lee House, 3205 Olive, Lemon Grove.  The festivities will include island music, feasting, hula dancing and the dramatic spectacle of the Polynesian Fire Dance.  The no host Grass Shack Bar and a 50-50 drawing will round out the evening.

OPEN HOUSE AT JULIAN FIRE STATION SEPT. 28

 

August 17, 2013 (Julian) -- Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District invites the public to an open house at the Julian Fire Station on Saturday, September 28 from 10-4 p.m.  The station is located on Farmers Road (which becomes Main Street) just east of Julian's historic downtown district.

Guests can enjoy games, firefighters' competitions, food, music in the park, demonstrations, as well as tours of the station, trucks, ambulance and helicopter.  The event also offers home fire prevention supplies, injury simulation ocmplete with makeup and "treatment" by paramedics, and chance to win four raffle packages.

BATTLE OF THE BANDS – ELVIS V. THE BEATLES SEPT. 7

August 12, 2013 (Alpine) – San Diegans will be able to revisit the sixties this fall at “60’s Rockin’ Mania – the ultimate battle of the bands” being held at Lions Tigers & Bears, September 7 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.  The concert showdown will feature Elvis impersonator James Kruk v. The Beatles “The Concert Experience.”

Guest will also be able to visit with the big cats and bears from 2 – 3 p.m., bid on door prizes and participate in opportunity drawings.  Food and drink will be available for purchase.  Guests are invited to bring blankets or low chairs.

SELL-OUT CROWD SAVORED OUR BBQ AND WILD WEST FEST IN DESCANSO

August 29, 2013 (Descanso) – More than 150 people turned out for East County Magazine’s BBQ and Wild West Fest at the Descanso Town Hall earlier this month.   

In addition to delicious barbecue-grilled tri-tip and chicken served up by Descanso Junction, guests enjoyed lively entertainment by the Pine Creek Posse Band, Western reenactors Gaskill Brothers Gunfighters and the Hole in the Wall Gang, as well as music by Wind Wind Spirit Drum, winners of the national Native American Music Awards.

“We’re delighted at the success and hope to hold a similar event at this historic setting in the future,” said ECM editor and founder Miriam Raftery.  The benefit raised funds to support wildfire reporting to supplement the Viejas Wildfire & Emergency Alerts provided by East County Magazine via e-mail, Twitter, and on KNSJ 89.1 FM radio.

LAUGHING MATTERS: PROMINENT COMICS AT COMEDY DEBUT IN LA MESA AUGUST 29

August 28, 2013 (La Mesa) – “For my first show, I want to start off with a bang!” Eric Knowles told ECM.  Knowles is launching a comedy show at the Regal Bar in La Mesa the last Thursday in each month at 8:30 p.m., starting August 29.

The opening program will feature nationally renown actor/comedian Tommy Chunn as well as is Brian Simpson, a regular at Mad House Comedy Club who helps produce the famed Comedy Juice shows.

6TH ANNUAL PALA POWWOW CELEBRATION AUG. 23 – 25

August 21, 2013 (Pala) -- The Pala Band of Mission Indians will hold its sixth annual “Honoring Traditions” Powwow August 23-25 at the Pala Rey Youth Camp, 10779 Highway 76, Pala. The Grand Entry will take place 8 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. This event is free and open to the public.

Activities include powwow dance contests, bird singing, an exhibition of “shinny” - a traditional Native American ball game, a homemade bow and arrow contest and a peon tournament. All ages are welcome to participate and the prizes range from $50 to $1,000. Eight invited performers will also compete in a drum contest for a grand prize of $12,000.

CAMPO GUNFIGHT REENACTMENT AT GOLDEN ACORN AUGUST 24

August 16, 2013 (Campo) – The “Gaskill Brothers Gunfighters” will be putting on a reenactment of the Campo Gunfight at Golden Acorn Casino as part of the casino’s BBQ Cook-off.  The cook-off is a free event and runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The skit’s director and producer, Bryon Harrington will narrate the show. He has authored the novel “Campo the Forgotten Gunfight” and will be signing copies of his book after the show.

August 8, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – San Diego State University is set for Aztec Fan Fest, formerly known as Aztec Family Day, which is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17 at Qualcomm Stadium.

The event features Tailgate Town, a Fan Fest scrimmage and a Meet the Team autograph session.

Gates open at 3:30 p.m. and admission is free. The event begins with Tailgate Town, which includes appearances by SDSU players, coaches and sponsors, as well as the SDSU Marching Aztecs and Cheer team.

August 8, 2013 (Lemon Grove) – The 36th season of the "History Alive" lecture series, sponsored by the Lemon Grove Historical Society, will begin on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. in the H. Lee House Cultural Center, 3205 Olive, Lemon Grove with "A Fireside Chat with Donna Beckley Adams," announced Estelle Lauer, vice president for Programs.

Adams is a veritable "Founding Mother" of Lemon Grove having worked for civic incorporation and spearheaded the "Family Town Meeting" workshops in April 1977 that led to the establishment of urban planning and management practices in the fledgling city.

COOL TIMES AFTER DARK: NIGHT FISHING AT LAKE JENNINGS

 

August 1, 2013 (Lakeside) – Summertime, and the living is easy. Fish are jumpin’, as the song goes.  Now you can try your hand at some summertime fishing after dark at Lake Jennings. The park is open for night fishing every Friday and Saturday night now through Labor Day at the end of August.

The largest fish caught at the lake is a whopping 68-pound catfish back in October2004.  The record Largemouth Bass weighed in at 17 pounds, 2 ounches, caught at Siesta Point in 2005.

With temperatures soaring to triple digits this summer, night fishing offers a cool option for anglers of all ages.  The lake also has picnicking, hiking, boating and camping.

Your ticket ($15 at early-bird rates, $20 at the door) includes a delicious tri-tip and chicken barbecue feast,  Wild West show, live music, dancing, and a chance to win thousands of dollars in prizes.The Hole in the Wall Gang and  Gaskill Brothers Gunfighters will provide live western reenactments with a full half-hour wild west show. Author Bryon Harrington will be there with his book, Campo, the Forgotten Gunfight. Plus we'll have a Doc Holliday reenactor. Pine Creek Posse Band will provide live music- so bring your dancing shoes (or your cowboy boots!)

WATERMELON DAYS AT THE OASIS CAMEL DAIRY JULY 27-28

 

July 25, 2013 (Ramona) –The Oasis Camel Dairy in Ramona invites the public to one of East County’s most unique events, Watermelon Days on July 27 and 28 from 3-6 p.m.

The fun begins with an exotic bird show at 3 p.m., followed by a camel show at 4 p.m.  After that, you can feed watermelons to the camels, enjoy camel rides, and shop at the Camel Dairy store for gift items such as camel milk soaps and lotions.
