SAN MIGUEL FIRE HOSTS OPEN HOUSES OCT. 7 IN SPRING VALLEY AND EL CAJON: LEARN HOW TO PREPARE FOR FIRE AND OTHER EMERGENCIES

October 3, 2017 (Spring Valley) -- As the fire season approaches, San Miguel Fire District is kicking off Fire Prevention Week with an Open House on Saturday, October 7 at four of its fire stations in the East County. 

Residents will learn:

* Sidewalk CPR

* How to create Defensible Space around the house

* What to place in an Emergency Kit

* How to develop an Emergency Plan for the family.

Firefighters in each station will be available to answer questions.  Kids will be given Firefighter helmets and fire badge stickers.

Refreshments will be served.

Guests savored special Italian dishes, homemade pasta,Italian and local wines, and  live Italian vocal music  at Tiramisu Trattoria in La Mesa--also winning a wealth of prizes, meeting neighbors and making new friends.

SCOTTY'S SCARE TRAIL PROMISES CREEPY FUN WEEKENDS IN OCTOBER

October 2, 2017 (El Cajon) — Scotty’s Scare Trail, located at the Marshall Scotty’s abandoned amusement park, is rumored to be haunted to old employees and children who never left.  Left in a “scary decrepit state,” the site is “the perfect destination to let our monsters out of their cages to roam free,” the Halloween venue’s webpage states.

A book signing and reception will follow the authors’ presentations, with copies of the books available for purchase.

Herrick Community Health Care Library, a consumer health library at 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, is hosting its current art exhibit featuring 45 paintings by Michael Dayon of La Mesa. The exhibit, ending Sept. 30, features Dayon’s paintings in a variety of media, including alkyd-oil, acrylic, gouache, graphite and mixed media. Also on display is Dayon’s “Fritz the Pearman” series (Fritz is Dayon’s “struggling artist” alter ego).

September 23, 2017 (Oceanside) — Citizens Oversight, an El Cajon-based watchdog group, will be announcing formation of a settlement oversight panel to monitor efforts to move nuclear waste from San Onofre to a safer place pursuant to a settlement agreement with Southern California Edison and the California Coastal Commission.  In addition, founder Ray Lutz will unveil a “1,000-year dry storage challenge” that aims to find a long-term solution to the nation’s lack of storage for nuclear wastes.

GARDEN PARTY AND POP-UP ART SHOW OCT. 1 IN SAN CARLOS

September 24, 2017 (San Carlos) -- On Sunday, October 1 from 12-4 p.m., the On the Edge Art Collective is hosting a garden party and pop-up art show at 6378 Lake Athabaska Place, San Diego, CA 92119.  The Collective, which has ties with the On the Edge Art Gallery in La Mesa, is a group of local artists who gather to paint together, challenge each other, and put on pop-up art shows to display and sell their works.  This event will be the second annual held at this location, the private residence of one of their members, Bebe Brookman.  Her home and garden will be the backdrop for affordable art by over 11 local artists.  They are also offering light refreshments and acoustic music.  For more information, call 619-733-4786.

September 24, 2017 (Julian) -- "Backcountry Strong!"  That's what the Julian Cuyamaca Fire Protection District is, and wants you to know it!  The Julian Volunteer Fire Company Association and the Julian Fire Plugs will be holding a spaghetti dinner fundraiser Saturday, September 30 at 5 p.m. at Station 56, located at 3407 Hwy 79 in Julian.  They will be accepting donations and offering spaghetti, garlic bread, salad and drinks.  They even have vegetarian options available.  There will be speakers and entertainment.

The panelists will discuss the founding of Republic of South Sudan (ROSS), concerns over ballooning populations of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs), as well as the responses by international, national, and local entities.  Confirmed panelists include former Governor of Western Equatoria, Honorable Bangasi Joseph Bakosoro and the Chairman and CEO of an international development firm, Dr. David S. Bassiouni.

Special menu:  Bruschetta, choice of soup or salad and choice of entrée:  Ravioli Ricotta, Spinaci or Zucca, Melanzana Alla Parmigiana, Pollo Marsala or Picata, Fettucine Bolognsee, Rigotoni Alla Norcina, Cavatelli di Ricotta, and delicious dessert: Tiramisu (plain or strawberry)
