March 7, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State senior guard Dakarai Allen has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year by the league’s head coaches, the conference announced today. Allen also landed on the all-defensive team, while Trey Kell was a third-team pick and Jeremy Hemsley was an honorable mention selection.

MEXICO OFFERS IMMIGRANTS HELP AT U.S. CONSULATES

March 6, 2017 (San Diego) – The Mexican government has announced that it is creating a network of help centers for Mexican immigrants at all consulates in the U.S.

The action aims to help Mexican citizens amid “fear and uncertainty” over President Donald Trump’s executive orders ramping up deportation and construction of a border wall, says Consul General Marcela Celorio in San Diego.

RACISM CAN NULLIFY JURY VERDICTS, SUPREME COURT RULES

March 6, 2017 (Washington D.C.) – By a 5 to 3 vote, the Supreme Court has ruled that a verdict can be voided and a new trial ordered if a juror showed racial bias.

The case involved a Colorado racetrack employee convicted of sexual battery after a juror stated during deliberations that the defendant must be guilty because “he’s Mexican, and Mexican men take whatever they want.”

March 6, 2017 (La Mesa) – Helix Water District’s board will hold a special meeting on March 8 at 6 p.m. to consider a proposal by newly elected board member Dan McMillan to lower water rates. 

But a staff report (see agenda) advises against a rate reduction at this time, citing insufficient reserves. Instead, staff recommends that the district continue to look at opportunities to reduce rates as fiscal year 2016-17 concludes, after results of winter and spring rainfall are measured and the fiscal year 2017-18 budget is developed.

March 5, 2017 (San Diego) — President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to rescind Clean Water Rule protections for small streams and replace it with a new rule allowing more pollution.  That action threatens drinking water supplies for millions of Americans – including 679,769 residents in San Diego County, according to data obtained from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

WET WEATHER HELPS FILL LOCAL RESERVOIRS

March 5, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) – Torrential rains during this wet winter have raised levels dramatically at local reservoirs, with a new storm possibly bringing even more rain this weekend. 

The Lower Otay reached 100% capacity, so a spillway was opened for the overflow.  Lake Poway came within inches of overflowing, closing hiking trails at the lake.

The preserve’s trails run along a granite-ribbed ridgeline, which has stunning views of both the ocean and mountains. It can easily take up to six hours to complete this 12-mile out-and-back trek.

March 5, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State men’s tennis team returned to the win-column Sunday with a 4-1 triumph over Boise State in the Mountain West opener for both squads at Aztec Tennis Center.  The Aztecs (5-5, 1-0 MW) captured a thrilling doubles point, before reeling off three victories in singles play to level their record on the year, while the Broncos (2-13, 0-1 MW dropped their seventh straight.

March 5, 2017 (San Diego) - Senior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift San Diego State to a 5-4 win over UC Davis on the final day of the San Diego Classic I Sunday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium. It was the third straight win for the Aztecs (11-7), who are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls.

March 4, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State dug itself out of an early three-run deficit, scoring six times over the opening three innings, to defeat Cal Poly, 6-4, Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The win was the fourth in a row for the Aztecs, who improved to 7-4 on the season.

March 4, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego State women's tennis team returned to the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday where the University of Hawai’i edged the Aztecs, 4-3.

The day began with close doubles competition, as Petra Melounova and Roxanne Resma claimed the first doubles victory against Jana Buth and Paola Diaz, 6-4. A close contest between duo Olivia Larsson and Alli Valk, and Marina Hruba and Alzbeta Houbova, ended in an Aztec victory, 7-6 (4). In a tight second seeded doubles match, Kennedy Davis and Mia Smith ultimately fell to Cindy Nguyen and Klara Pribylova, 7-6 (5), and Hawai’i claimed the doubles point.
