October 7, 2024 (Santee) -- Bob Schulze, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother, passed away peacefully in his sleep from a heart attack on August 30, 2024. Born June 23, 1966 in Huntington, Long Island, New York, Bob moved to California at the age of three, living in Garden Grove and spending most of his adult life in Santee.
Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1984 to 1987 and dedicated over 30 years to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, from which he recently retired. He was passionate about keeping his country safe and prosperous, serving both at home and abroad.
Bob’s true passions extended beyond his professional career. He was a gifted singer and actor, with a love for the stage and making people laugh. Bob was the co-founder of Off Broadway Live musical theater in Santee, where his larger-than-life personality, joy for entertaining, and bringing smiles to others was a gift he shared with all.

They addressed issues including housing and homelessness, restoring remote public comments, policing and public safety, district elections and campaign finance reform, and infrastructure to protect against extreme storms such as January’s floods.

October 6, 2024 (Lakeside) -- Lionel’s Legacy, a non-profit in Lakeside that rescues senior pets, and its founder, Laura Oliver, were recognized by the Red Cross at the Real Heroes Award ceremony held on the Midway on September 27. Oliver was honored for all the work her organization does to help senior dogs in need. She was given the Animal Welfare Hero Award for Lionel’s Legacy. Furthermore, the Red Cross acknowledged her for co-founding the San Diego Rescue Coalition, a collaboration of animal welfare agencies working together to improve animal rescue efforts in San Diego.
Lionel’s Legacy, an organization that rescues and finds homes for senior dogs, was founded in 2012 by Laura Oliver, and her family. Lionel was a 15-year-old pit bull that the Olivers adopted. He inspired them to start an organization that specializes in fostering and finding good homes for senior pets.

A medical team that provides in-home follow-up care to patients who were recently hospitalized at Sharp Grossmont Hospital is helping them avoid unplanned returns to the emergency room. The County, Grossmont Healthcare District, and Sharp Grossmont Hospital partnered to pilot this program in June 2023 and are extending the mobile service for another year. Plans are underway to expand it.

September 30, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) – Cal Fire Captain and Public Information Officer Mike Cornette, in an interview aired on the East County Magazine Radio Show on KNSJ, offered an outlook on peak wildfire season, information on new Zone Zero defensible space requirements around homes, as well as tips to prepare for wildfires and keep your household safe.
On the fall outlook for wildfires, he notes that fire season is now year-round. “We’ve seen large fires anywhere from January to December in every different part of the state, every different part of the county.” Now that peak fire season approaches, there is heavy grass from last winter’s heavy rains, “so we’re still expecting potential for large wildland fires through December.”
Recent major fires in Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange and San Bernadino Counties should be a "wakeup call" for residents across California to be prepared for wildfires by creating defensible space around homes and being ready to evacuated if needed.
Captain Cornette urges people to maintain defensible space from 0 to 100 feet around your home—thinning fuels in the morning, with high humidity and lower temperatures, “to make it more survivable.”

The forum will take place on Monday, September 30 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the New Seasons Church,2300 Brancroft Drive in Spring Valley.
Both candidates, LaShae Sharp-Collins, PhD, and Colin Parent have confirmed their attendance. Sharp-Collins is the County Office of Education’s community engagement specialist and an adjunct professor at San Diego State University. Parent is a La Mesa City Councilman, attorney, and general counsel for the nonprofit Circulate San Diego.
They will give opening statements and take questions from the audience. Take this opportunity to hear the candidates and learn where they stand on issues important to you.

The tour will showcase homes in Grossmont/ Mt Helix.
During the pre-sale, La Mesa History Center members can purchase tickets for $30, and non-members can buy them for $40. The deadline to purchase pre-sale tickets is October 30th. On the day of the event, tickets will be $35 for members and $45 for non-members.

Senate Bill 1061 will ban almost all medical debt from showing up on people's credit reports.

September 25, 2024 (Sacramento, CA) -- Gov. Gavin Newsom signed tighter rat poison restrictions into law today, expanding an existing moratorium to include all blood-thinning rat poisons, known as anticoagulant rodenticides. The Poison-Free Wildlife Act, orAssembly Bill 2552, offers the strongest protections in the country against these toxic rat poisons, which unintentionally harm and kill wildlife.
