We just changed our smoke detector batteries with daylight savings this weekend for fire preventive measures. Flu season is among us and like fire prevention, it’s important to take cold/flu preventive measures. Emergency rooms become saturated this time of year due to those with the flu. Unfortunately this may delay those that have significant health/medical issues or injuries from getting treatment quickly according to Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna.

November 15, 2012 (Santee) – On October 29, Sportsplex USA will made a donation to the Santee School District Foundation in the amount of $1410.00.  Sportsplex USA and the Santee School District Foundation (SSDF) have partnered with the goal of offering affordable recreational youth indoor soccer programs to all parents and children in Santee.  Since the partnership with the SSDF began in January, 2012, Sportsplex USA has donated $4,510 to the Foundation after three successful youth recreational soccer seasons. 

November 15, 2012 (Alpine) -- The Alpine Woman’s Club will hold its eighth annual “Christmas in Alpine” Holiday Home Tour on Sunday, December 9th from 10a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be an opportunity to stroll through five stunning country estates and view one of Alpine’s beautiful churches, which will be decorated for the season. The historic town hall will also be open from 1:30 on for ticket holders.  Refreshments will be served.  The tour tickets are $30.00.

IRRI to be the hub of regeneration research on heart disease in the San Diego region.

November 14, 2012 (San Diego) -- The emerging field tissue regeneration, which harnesses the power and healing potential of stem cells, is an area that scientists around the world are turning their attention to. One of the foremost leaders in this area, Mark Sussman from San Diego State University, today announced the opening of SDSU’s new Integrated Regenerative Research Institute (IRRI) to help advance this area of research in San Diego.

November 14, 2012 (San Diego) – The Pomerado Brass Quintet will perform at Mission Trails Regional Park, One Father Junipero Serra Drive, on December 16 from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m.  The free concert will feature music selected for the Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations presented in a variety of styles that will be certain to appeal to all who attend.

As in Ocotillo, where a wind project has anguished tribal members and residents with destruction of cultural and environmental resources, the community of Boulevard now faces an onslaught of massive "green" energy projects on public, tribal and private lands.

November 13, 2012 (San Diego) – In Colorado and Washington, voters decided it's high time to legalize recreational marijuana use. But locally, voters in Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach and Solana Beach defeated initiatives that would have allowed medical marijuana dispensaries.

Labor scored a win in Escondido, where a charter city ballot proposition was defeated by a 47.29% to 42.71% margin. Meanwhile in In Santee, a bastion of conservatism, voters approved raising transient occupancy taxes for hotel guests and campers from 6% to 10%, a move expected to generate $239,000 in revenues.

November 11, 2012 (San Diego) – Veterans Day is a day to remember and honor all American men and women who served our country. But this year, it's also a day to reflect on just what impact last week's election will have on America's 22 million veterans.

In his stirring victory speech late Tuesday night, President Obama passionately reminded the nation how important it is to support our warriors and their families. He reiterated that support today in a speech at the Arlington Memorial Cemetery's Memorial Amphitheater, saying, "No one who fights for this country overseas should ever have to fight for a job, or a roof over their head, or the care that they have earned when they come home."
