BOOK REVIEW: MURDERING THE MOM—A SOUL-SEARCHING MEMOIR

Murdering The Mom: A Memoir, by Duff Brenna (Wordcraft of Oregon, LLC., La Grande, Oregon, 2012, 217 pages).

Book Review by Dennis Moore

July 9, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)--Duff Brenna, a long-time East County resident and graduate of San Diego State, where he also taught and garnered several faculty awards, has written a candid and somewhat disturbing memoir of growing up in a dysfunctional family. Murdering The Mom: A Memoir resonates with me, for there are some aspects of this brilliantly written and insightful book that are eerily reminiscent of my mother and how she had to raise 10 of us – basically by herself.

Story by Ron Logan

Update November 1, 2013:   Ron Logan e-mailed ECM to inform us that Sara Kruzan has been freed after 19 years in prison and is now living in a halfway house.

July 7, 2012 (San Diego) – This Independence Day promised the usual smell of barbecued burgers and dogs, the taste of chilled drinks, the glisten of suntan lotion, the sound of children playing, and the smoke, the lights and the crackle of pyrotechnics. Across the nation, families celebrated their independence, partied with friends, and enjoyed the freedoms that we far too often take for granted.

But this Independence Day meant much more for Sara Kruzan – a woman who has never known independence, has never enjoyed freedom, and has fallen through the cracks of our society.

 By Miriam Raftery

July 5, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) –Among the least understood aspects of the Affordable Care Act are the benefits that it offers to nonprofit organizations.  Smaller nonprofits have potential to reap benefits, along with their employees—without the potential penalties facing some for-profit employers.

East County Magazine contacted the new Health Law Guide for businesses site to ask how the law will impact nonprofit organizations.  Here is the response that we received:
