SUSPECTED DUI DRIVER KILLED IN ROLLOVER CRASH IN JACUMBA

December 27, 2023 (Jacumba Hot Springs) – The driver of a red Ford Edge sustained fatal injuries in a solo-vehicle accident yesterday around 4:35 p.m.,  The crash also injured a passenger.  

The driver, a 52-year-old woman from  Wilmington, California, veered off I-8 westbound just east of McCain Valley Road in Jacumba Hot springs.  The vehicle rolled over multiple times, tumbling down an embankment.

Update: The victim has been identified as Monterro Friend, 34, of San Diego.
 
June 2, 2019 (San Diego’s East County) – The California Highway Patrol seeks public help to identity the driver of a blue Toyota Tundra killed shortly before 4 a.m. after his vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed, struck a guardrail and went airborne over the side at Crestwood Road in rural East County.  The vehicle vaulted over traffic on Crestwood and hit the I-8 westbound bridge.

PURSUIT OF DUI SUSPECT IN LA MESA ENDS IN CRASH ON I-8

July 1, 2017 (La Mesa) – A suspected drunk driver crashed into a semi-truck on Interstate 8 near State Route 125 on Wednesday, following a pursuit by La Mesa police and California Highway Patrol early Wednesday morning.

MOTORCYCLYST KILLED IN HIGH SPEED CRASH ON I-8

January 9, 2014 (San Diego) Updated January 10, 2014 – A motorcyclist who witnesses reported was speeding at up to 100 miles per hour and weaving across lanes struck a Hyundai sedan on I-8 eastbound west of Texas Street in Mission Valley around 4 p.m. today.  Both vehicles burst into flames.

Passerbys stopped and tried to douse flames with a fire extinguisher, also performing CPR on the motorcyclist, 22, from San Diego before firefighters and paramedics arrived, but he was declared dead at the scene.  He was driving a dark 2008 sport-type Suzuki motorcycle, according to CHP.

The Hyundai driver, a 53-year-old Chula Vista woman, escaped without injuries.

DUI DRIVER SENDS FAMILY OF 4 TO HOSPITAL

December 4, 2011 (San Diego) –The driver of a Land Rover has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after causing a crash that sent a family of four to the hospital. The accident occurred about 10 a.m. on eastbound I-8 near Waring Road.

The Land Rover was traveling 80-90 mph when it struck two vehicles, including a Lexus SUV that spun out and crossed the center divide, then plummeted 120-150 feet down an embankment.
