MAN KILLED BY TROLLEY IN LA MESA

July 4, 2011 (La Mesa) – Christopher Sanchez, 22, of Paradise Hills was struck and killed last night by an eastbound Green Line San Diego Trolley approximately 200 yards east of the Grossmont Center trolley stop in Mesa, according to the County Medical Examiner. La Mesa Police and Fire personnel confirmed death at the scene due to obvious fatal trauma.

MOTORIST DRIVES HOME WITH VICTIM'S BODY IN FRONT SEAT AFTER HORRIFIC ACCIDENT ON HWY 125

 

July 3, 2011 (Lemon Grove) – Lon Scully, 74, was struck and killed around 2 a.m. Friday morning while attempting to cross the southbound lanes of State Route 125 north of Spring Street in La Mesa when he was struck by a silver Hyundai sedan, the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office reports.

 

The accident severed the victim’s legs and hurled his torso through the windshield, where it became lodged in the front seat, CHP spokesman Brian Pennings said, La Mesa’s Patch.com reported.

2 ARRESTS MADE IN SHOOTING OF TEEN IN LA MESA

July 1, 2011 (La Mesa) – Two alleged gang members have been arrested and charged with attempted murder of a 16-year-old boy who was shot in the head while riding his skateboard in La Mesa. The youth, who was from Arizona, was robbed and shot around 1:49 a.m. on June 27 outside a motel where he was staying with his family.

FATHER WHO THREATENED WIFE AND SON ARRESTED AFTER SWAT STANDOFF IN LA MESA

 

June 29, 2011 (La Mesa)--William Warnock, 59, is under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon and felony criminal threats after an eight hour standoff with police. La Mesa Police responded to a call at 6100 Blain Place, La Mesa, around 10 p.m. last night after Warnock's wife reported that her husband had threatened to hurt her and also threatened to kill their 20-year-old son with a large screwdriver.

TEEN SHOT IN HEAD DURING LA MESA ROBBERY

 

June 27, 2011 (La Mesa)  A 16-year-old boy was shot in the head early this morning at 1:49 a.m. after being robbed in front of 7366 El Cajon Boulevard. The victim is from Paradise Valley, Arizona, and was staying at a local La Mesa motel with his family.

 

The boy was riding his skateboard when the robbery and shooting occurred. The suspects took a personal item and a small amount of cash during the robbery.

At the June 14, 2011 La Mesa City Council meeting Mayor Art Madrid moved to remove the city from the East County Economic Development Council and rather use the $5,000 annual membership fee to allow city officials to do more travel to defend city financing at state and federal levels. Time will tell how worthwhile this plan will be.

FBI MOST WANTED SUSPECT ARRESTED IN LA MESA, THANKS TO A CITIZEN TIPSTER

June 16, 2011 (La Mesa) – Kimberly Dawn Roehr of La Mesa has been arrested on four counts of burglary and one count of receiving stolen property, thanks to a tip from a local citizen who recognized her from the “San Diego’s Most Wanted-The FBI Files” television program.

 

The suspect had been recorded on video stealing hundreds of dollars of electronic merchandise at the Target store in Grossmont Center in January and February, according to the FBI.

JEWEL THIEF ROBS ZALES IN GROSSMONT CENTER AT GUNPOINT

June 14, 2011 (La Mesa) -- La Mesa Police Department responded to a call of a robbery at the Zales Jewelry Store in Grossmont Center shopping mall at 8:17 p.m.  The store’s manager advised that he had just closed the business and was locking the doors, with one customer still in the store. The customer pulled out a black semi-auto handgun and pointed it at the manager, ordering the manager and another employee to get on the ground.

LA MESA IS READING IN THE PARK JUNE 18

June 11, 2011 (La Mesa) -- The City of La Mesa, in partnership with the La Mesa Park and Recreation Foundation, San Diego County La Mesa Branch Library, Readers Inc., and Friends of the La Mesa Library, will co-host Reading in the Park on Sat., June 18 from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at CollierPark, 4401 Palm Avenue, La Mesa.  

 

Hear children’s book authors give theatrical readings of their works and explain how their stories are created. Visit the craft table where kids can decorate a bookmark to take home. The City of La Mesa invites you to the annual patriotic event

June 2, 2011 (La Mesa) --On Saturday, June 4th beginning at 9:00 a.m., downtown La Mesa will dress up in red, white and blue for the 14th Annual La Mesa Flag Day Parade,” A Salute to Old Glory! “ 

The parade begins at 10:00 a.m. and marches through downtown La Mesa Village. Spectators will enjoy over 75 entries, including marching bands led by the Third Marine Aircraft Wing Band. The 2011 Grand Marshalls are the 1961 Little League World Champions from La Mesa. Floats, military vehicles, active and retired war heroes, equestrian units, service clubs and youth groups will celebrate civic pride and our national symbol, along with a 20-foot wide ‘living flag’ carried by community volunteers.

EAST COUNTY STUDENTS ADVANCE TO NATIONAL HISTORY DAY FINALS

 

May 23, 2011 (La Mesa) – A team of seventh graders from Day-McKellar Preparatory School in La Mesa will advance to the finals for the National History Day Competition in June 12-16 in Maryland. “Next year we’re expanding to host the Taste of the Century,” promised La Mesa Chamber of Commerce president Mary England. Held at the La Mesa Community Center, the savory event will expand across the hall --with room to double the size during La Mesa's centennial celebration in 2012.

This year’s Taste of La Mesa featured some new vendors as well as familiar favorites.

ALLISON AVENUE GRAND OPENING

 

May 21, 2011 (La Mesa)--On Tuesday, May 24, 2011, the City of La Mesa will host the Grand Opening of the Allison Avenue streetscape improvement project. The event will take place in front of and just east of the La Mesa Library (8074 Allison Avenue) at 4:30 pm.


Allison Avenue is located in the heart of La Mesa’s downtown and Civic Center providing access to shopping, the Trolley Station, bus stops, Civic Center, the Library and Post Office.


The award winning Allison Avenue project includes many new urban smart growth design concepts; including enhanced crosswalks with inlayed flashing pavement markers, decorative streetlights, walkability features, street trees,  landscaping, diagonal parking and improved bus shelters.

PURSE SNATCH AT GROSSMONT CENTER

 

 

 

 

On May 19, 2011, at about 1:15 PM, a man knocked a woman down and took her deposit bag near the Target Store in Grossmont Center. The suspect was described as a black male, 20 years old, muscular build wearing a white “do” rag, a white tee shirt and jeans. He was driven from the scene in a white Nissan X-Terra by a heavyset black female with long hair. 

The victim was a 49 year old female who sustained several abrasions as a result of the robbery. She was taken to Grossmont Hospital for evaluation. The loss was the deposit bag and its contents.

May 18, 2011 (La Mesa) – Ashley Charlton, a junior and AP student at West Hills High School, has been named the grand prize winner for her entry in the 3rd Annual Golden Artistry Jewelry Design Competition.

 

Other top entrants for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place were Cassandra Kingsbury from El Capitan, Scott Holcomb and Noraa Reeder from Santana.

MOTHER, RUN OVER BY SUV WITH CHILDREN INSIDE, DIES AT HOSPITAL

 

May 5, 2011 (La Mesa) – Heidi Durfey, 24, has died after her sports utility vehicle (SUV) with her three young children inside rolled backward 60 feet and ran over her.  The tragedy occurerd on the driveway of her home in the 8700 block of Glenira Avene in La Mesa around 9:20 a.m. 

 

She became caught under the SUV as it rolled and was dragged beneath the vehicle. “It came to rest in the street with the front end of the vehicle on top of the victim’s head and chest,” said Sonny Saghera with Heartland Fire & Rescue.

GUHSD STUDENTS DIVE INTO JEWELRY DESIGN: GOLDEN ARTISTRY WINNERS TO BE HONORED MAY 5 AT EVENT TO BENEFIT EAST COUNTY ARTS

 

May 5, 2011 (La Mesa)--Approximately 300 students from the Grossmont Union High School District plunged into designing water-themed jewelry in the 3rd Annual Golden Artistry Jewelry Design Competition. The twenty-two finalists will be honored this Thursday evening, May 5th from 5-9 p.m., at La Mesa’s Community Center.

 

This FREE event is a fundraiser for the arts, with funds distributed by Friends of East County Arts, Inc. The evening will have FREE food from Tiramisu Trattoria and El Cajon Applebys.  Wine and beer will be available for purchase. The evening also includes a live auction and opportunity drawing prizes. The event is open to all who want to support the arts.
