February 16, 2024 (San Diego) – When a flood control channel next to Donna Ferguson’s townhome on Bonillo Drive in San Diego’s Rolando community,  water  surged through the ground floor, sweeping away everything in its path including furniture, appliances and clothes, also destroying the electric scooter chair that she relies on for mobility.

February 27, 2023 (Roland) -- A rare hailstorm pelted much of San Diego County on Saturday night.  Pat Bennett of Rolando sent in these photos, stating, "I have lived in San Diego for 55 years and have never seen more than a few hailstones fall. Tonight, my garden, deck, patio furniture and roof were covered with it!"

TWO EL CAJON STRONG-ARM ROBBERY SUSPECTS STILL AT LARGE, ONE ARRESTED IN ROLANDO

June 27, 2019 (El Cajon) – Two suspects masked with black bandanas demanded merchandise from customers at a T-Mobile store at 354 N. Second Street in El Cajon at 11:05 a.m. yesterday. A customer was assaulted, suffering minor injuries before the two robbers fled in a dark Chrysler four-door sedan along with a third suspect.

Two of the suspects were described as black male adult wearing jeans.  One wore a black hooded sweatshirt and is around 6 ft. tall, weighing 200 pounds. The other is approximately 5 ft. 7 inches tall and weighs 170 pounds.  A third suspect is of unknown description.

GUNMAN INJURES 2 POLICE OFFICERS IN ROLANDO STANDOFF

June 24, 2018 (San Diego) – Two San Diego Police officers who responded to a call in the Rolando area near San Diego State University last night were shot by a suspect wearing body armor.  Both officers are listed in stable condition, one with serious injuries, though Police Chief David Nisleit says both are expected to survive.

MASKED ROBBER FIRES SHOTS IN ROLANDO FOOD 4 LESS

March 5, 2018 (Rolando) -- A masked gunman opened fire in the Food 4 Less store in the 6500 block of University Avenue in the Rolando area shortly before midnight Sunday, after demanding money from employees and chasing the manager, who locked himself into a back room. The robber then fired at least two shots at the door, according to San Diego Police.

The gunman, who wore a hooded sweatshirt as well as a mask, fled the scene without getting any money, and he remains at large.

November 12, 2015 (Rolando) – San Diego Police seek public help to locate Vicent “Chente” Garza Salas, 22.  He is suspected of murdering 43-year-old Vincente Carrera with a machete on Nov. 5 at 10 p.m. at a home in the 6800 block of Waite Drive in the Rolando area, just west of La Mesa.

POLICE INVESTIGATE FATAL SHOOTING IN ROLANDO

 

December 1, 2013 (Rolando)--San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the death of a man in the Rolando area.

On Saturday, November 30th at approximately 11:27 p.m., patrol officers responded to a 911 call of a shooting in the 7100 block of El Cajon Boulevard. Arriving officers located a man in his thirties lying on the ground in a parking lot. He was bleeding from the torso and appeared to have suffered at least one gunshot wound.

SUSPECT SOUGHT IN ROLANDO STORE ROBBERY

 

April 23, 2012 (San Diego) -- On April 21, Sun Beauty Supply in the 6300 block of El Cajon Blvd. in Rolando was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money.  A male suspect entered the store at approximately 3:14 p.m. and pointed a knife at the owner, demanding money.  He left with the money and was last seen south bound on Art Street, according to San Diego Police.

February 11, 2011 (Rolando) – San Diego Police report that around 3:26 a.m., two suspects broke the front glass doors at Change U Beauty 6463 University Ave and entered, then stole numerous human hair extensions value at about $10,000 and an undisclosed amount of money.

2 INJURED IN DRUNK DRIVING-RELATED CRASH IN ROLANDO

 

November 1, 2010 (Rolando) – Halloween Night ended badly for two 18-year-old men, who were both seriously injured after crashing into a parked car in the 4500 block of Revillo Way in Rolando last night. The driver sustained an open fracture to his leg. The passenger sustained facial fractures and a broken hip.
