January 30, 2018 (San Diego) - San Diego State’s Ashley Henderson has been named the Mountain West Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Henderson has won the weekly award twice in two tries this year (also Jan. 16), two indoor awards for her career and five MW athlete-of-the-week awards overall (also three outdoor accolades).

January 30, 2018 (Tucson) - The San Diego State men's golf team finished in a tie for 10th place at the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday after shooting a combined 6-over-par 290 during the final round at Sewailo Golf Club. With their score, the Aztecs completed their opening event of the spring with a 54-hole total of 46-over 898 on the par-71, 7,292-yard course layout.

January 30, 2018 (San Diego) - Former Padres general manager Kevin Towers has passed away at the age of 56.  Towers, who is most known for putting together the 1998 Padres team who won the National League championship, passed from a rare form of thyroid cancer that he was diagnosed with in December of 2016.

The Flash improved to 15-0, while the Sockers dropped to 12-3 on the season. The win gives Monterrey the advantage in the playoffs, if the two teams meet again the game will be played in Mexico. January 27, 2018 (San Diego) - San Diego State seniors Geena Gomez and Khalia Lark scored 17 points apiece on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough as visiting UNLV roared back from an 18-point deficit to hand the Aztec women’s basketball team a disappointing 75-64 defeat in front of 4,568 fans at Steve Fisher Court on Girls and Women in Sports Day.

January 24, 2018 (San Diego) - The third time was charmed. Trevor Hoffman has been hurled into Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

The legendary San Diego Padres closer, who retired in 2010 after two years with the Milwaukee Brewers, was elected by the Baseball Writers Association of America in a vote announced Wednesday.

January 23, 2018 (Spring Valley) - ECM traveled to Granite Hills on Tuesday night for a clash between the lady Eagles and the lady Wolf Pack on the court.  Granite Hills has started their season a little lackluster, going 7-10 overall and 1-1 in league.  The Wolf Pack sport the same 7-10 record, but are undefeated so far in league, going 2-0.

January 23, 2018 (El Cajon) - At Monday’s Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) Board Meeting, recognition was given to top sports teams for their victories and their “sportsmanlike” conduct.

Helix Charter, Monte Vista and Steele Canyon high schools all won CIF-SDS 2017 Champions, and West Hills Gymnasium is named in honor of David C. Hunter after a GUHSD vote, while the Steele Canyon 2017 SoCal Regional Football Champions and “West Hills Way” were accoladed as being “sportsmanlike.”

The Aztecs finish the 2017-18 dual meet schedule with an 11-1 record and now look towards the 2018 Mountain West Championships on Feb. 14-16 in San Antonio, Texas.

January 17, 2018 (Spring Valley) - For the first high school coverage of the new year, ECM traveled to Spring Valley, where the Vaqueros of El Capitan saw the Monte Vista Monarchs in the pool.  The lady Monarchs have a rough start to the season, going 2-4 overall and winless in league (0-2).  The Vaqueros are doing a little better; 6-5 overall but also winless (0-2) in league.

Dylan Strome scored two goals and added an assist (2-1-3) for Tucson while Adin Hill stopped 31-of-33 shots in the victory. Despite the loss, San Diego has wins in four of their last five games (4-1-0-0), and has won 10 of their last 13 contests (10-3-0-0) and 12 of their last 16 (12-4-0-0).
