December 27, 2016 (San Diego) – Each year, over 300 aspiring writers from around the world attend the San Diego State University Writers’ Conference. This year, the conference will be held January 20th through 22nd at the San Diego Marriott in Mission Valley.   The conference was the first to pioneer one-on-one appointments for writers with editors, agents and other top-tier publishing professionals who can provide direct feedback on your writing.

ANZA-BORREGO DESERT STATE PARK HOSTS TWO FIRST DAY HIKES ON NEW YEAR’S DAY

December 27, 2016 (La Mesa) – Unite San Diego, a coalition of pastors, elected officials, business owners and community leaders, will host a New Year’s Day “Prayer Summit” from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Sunday, January, 1, at the Mount Helix Park Amphitheater, 4901 Mt. Helix Dr., La Mesa. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free. The program will include music, worship and prayers. A prelude to worship will begin at 1 p.m. Several hundred people are expected to attend, said Michael Griffiths of Unite San Diego.

FREE CHRISTMAS TREE GIVEAWAY FOR EL CAJON RESIDENTS DEC. 23

December 21, 2016 (El Cajon) --Newly elected El Cajon City Councilmember Steve Goble and the El Cajon Police Department are hosting a “Free Christmas Tree” giveaway this Friday, December 23rd.

These free Christmas trees will be given out from 7:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at Cartwright Pest Control, located at 1376 Broadway in El Cajon.   There will be 150 trees, up to 8’ tall and some will include flocking.  The trees will be given out first come, first serve, while supplies last.

KOGO's Cliff Albert, LaDona Harvey, Ted Garcia and Cal Walker will help collect donations benefiting the Salvation Army El Cajon Corps and East County families.

HEAR OUR INTERVIEW: KATIE HALVIN SHARES DETAILS ON LA MESA'S HOLIDAY IN THE VILLAGE EVENT THIS SATURDAY

 

 

December 9, 2016 (La Mesa)-- The new Holiday in the Village event will be bringing back some of La Mesa's most cherished holiday traditions--including chestnuts roasting on open fires,  holiday music and carnival rides for kids,  plus creating some new memories for all including booths with over 80 artisans.  Santa Claus will also be at the event slated for this Saturday,  December10th from 10 a.m.to 10 p.m. There's also a holiday card drive to brighten the holidays for U.S. troops overseas.

This is the first year that the new  La MesaVillage Association has been in charge of the event.  East County Magazine interviewed  Katie Halvin,  an organizer of the event,  on our radio show originally aired on KNSJ 89.1  FM.

CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL KICKS OFF ITS ANNUAL “CHIPS FOR KIDS” HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE

December 6, 2016 (San Diego) - The California Highway Patrol has launched its 2016 CHiPs for Kids toy drive in San Diego County.  CHiPs for Kids is a Community Outreach program that has been in existence for 28 years in other areas of the state.  Friday December 16th.  There will be several collection and distribution events in the county, including Friday,  December 16th from  2 to 6 p.m. at the Walgreens Store in Lakeside(9728 Winter Gardens Boulevard 92040 here in East County.)  You can also drop off a new, unwrapped toy at any CHP office, Red Robin Restaurant, Waste Management, or Walgreens location between now and December 23rd.

November 29, 2016 (La Mesa) - The La Mesa Village Association's new event, Holiday in the Village, will be held on December 10th from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., following a long history of Christmas in the Village events.

“As it is a new association sponsoring the event and the city is working to be more inclusive of all the holiday festivities at this time of year we have changed the name to reflect that,” the LMVA website states. Rest assured we will still have fire pits, caroling, lots of events for kids, and craft vendors to get everyone in the mood of the season!"

Their fight for justice and their sacrifices created a legacy of better working conditions for future generations.
