HOMELESS WOMAN WANTED FOR STARTING FIRE THAT BURNED GARAGES IN EL CAJON

January 16, 2024 (El Cajon) – Authorities are asking for public help to locate Mavis Williams, 43.  She is suspected of setting a fire that burned 14 garages in the 400 block of East Bradley Avenue in unincorporated El Cajon last night.  A warrant has been issued and a $1,000 reward is offered for information leading to her arrest.

WATER UTILITY SCAM ALERT: IMPOSTERS SEEK ACCESS TO HOMES



January 16, 2024 – Residents countywide are warned to be vigilant for imposter water agency “workers” knocking on doors and requesting entry to homes to test water quality or making sales pitches, the San Diego Coiunty Water Authority warns.

Similar scams pop up every few years. A spate of incidents has been reported by several water agencies across the region in recent weeks, including in the City of San Diego, South County and East County.

HEARING FEB. 9 ON PROPOSED RELEASE OF SEXUALLY VIOLENT PREDATOR IN CAMPO

January 14, 2024  (Campo) -- San Diego Superior Court has ordered the conditional release of Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) Alan Earl James. The California Department of State Hospitals (DSH) has recommended placement of Alan James at 1138 Custer Road, Campo, CA 91906. He was convicted of sexual assaults with three minors dating back to 1981 and 1985, and kidnapping a child for sexual molestation.

January 11, 2024 (La Mesa) – La Mesa police seeks public help to solve the murder of 22-year-old Corneilius Donte Brown.  His family is offering a $9,000 reward, in addition to a $1,000 Crimestoppers award, for information leading to the identification and arrest of suspects in his murder, which occurred on April 24, 2021 around 12:26 a.m.

PARENTS IDENITIFED IN APPARENT MURDER-SUICIDE

January 7, 2023 (El Cajon)—The parents of three children are dead of in an apparent murder-suicide at their home in the 1600 block of Hilton Head Court in unincorporated El Cajon. The deceased have been identified as Jose Benjamin Lopez Valle, 41, and his wife, Brenda Valle, 38.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call reporting an assault with a deadly weapon and gunshots. Inside the residence, they found the victims with a firearm nearby. Deputies and paramedics provided medical care but could not save the couple. 

“It appears that Jose’s injuries were self-inflicted,” says Lieutenant Joseph Jarjura with the Sheriff’s homicide unit.

They were parents to three children, ages 18, 16 and 11.

BODY OF ELDERLY WOMAN FOUND IN FREEZER AT ALLIED GARDENS HOME WAS FORMER KAISER WORKER

January 5, 2024 (San Diego) – The body of an elderly woman found Dec. 22 in a chest freezer at an Allied Gardens home has been identified as Mary Margaret Haxby-Jones, who formerly lived there. According to Lt. Jud Campbell with San Diego Police, she may have been missing or  dead for as long as nine years and would have been 81 years old if she had survived.

DONALD SANTINI, AKA WELLMAN SIMMONDS, PLEADS GUILTY TO MURDER OF FLORIDA WOMAN

December 28, 2023 (Lake Morena, CA) – A Florida judge has sentenced Donald Santini to 50 years in prison, with 15 years parole, after he pleaded guilty to the 1984 strangulation murder of Cynthia Wood, the mother of three young children, the Tampa Bay Times reported in November. A fugitive for 40 years, Santini 65, lived under the alias  Wellman Simmonds in Campo’s Lake Morena community and even held public office. He served on the Campo-Lake Morena Community Planning Group and as president of the Lake Morena Views Mutual Water Company.

His arrest in June by federal marshals for the murder of a Florida woman decades ago since shockwaves through the Lake Morena Community, as ECM reported.

$20,000 REWARD OFFERED FOR TIPS TO SOLVE STRING OF NEIGHBORHOOD MARKET ROBBERIES

December 22, 2023 (San Diego)—The Neighborhood Market Association (NMA) held a press conference on Dec. 18 outside the Emerald Convenience Store in La Mesa to announce that it is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects in a series of armed robberies.

“A dangerous gang of gun-wielding criminals is terrorizing local small businesses in a series of armed `take-over’ style robberies at more than a dozen locations in the city and county of San Diego. Police have expressed concerns that these violent robberies could cause serious injury or death to innocent store employees,” a press release from the NMA states.

Last week, at least 13 convenience stores across  San Diego County were robbed; new surveillance video shows thieves yanking out cash registers and fleeing with the cash.

BURGLARY SUSPECT ARRESTED IN LA MESA AFTER FIVE-HOUR STANDOFF

December 11, 2023 (La Mesa) – After La Mesa Police responded to a call reporting a burglary in a vacant apartment in the 8500 block of Chloe Avenue, the suspect barricaded the door and claimed to have a hostage inside.

“The suspect was known to officers and was known to have an outstanding felony arrest warrant for a theft-related charge,” says Lieutenant Katy Lynch.

Residents of adjacent apartments were evacuated and additional resources were requested, including the La Mesa Police Department’s Special Response Team, the San Diego Sheriff Department’s Crisis Negotiation Team, and a K9 from the San Diego Police Department.

December 8, 2023 (Ramona) – Angel Jauregui, 35, of  Ramona has been identified as the victim of a deadly shooting that occurred on December 5th. Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call around 11:24 p.m. reporting gunshots and found Jauregui  at the intersection of State Route 78 and Haverford Road in Ramona.

LA MESA TO ROLL OUT LICENSE PLATE READERS

December 8, 2023 (La Mesa) – The La Mesa City Council voted on Nov.28 to join 15 San Diego County cities and agencies in installing 20 automated license plate readers (ALPR) in high traffic areas throughout the city at a cost of $124,500 for a two-year period. 

 

The vote passed 4-1, with Vice Mayor Laura Lothian casting the only dissenting vote.

December 5, 2023 (La Mesa) --  A representative from District Attorney Summer Stephan's office and the La Mesa Police Dept. invite community members to a hate crimes forum with Q&A session on Dec.14 at 5:30 p.m. at the La Mesa Police Dept., 8085  University Ave., La Mesa.

The forum comes on the heels of anti-Semitic flyers repeatedly disseminated in La Mesa and the nearby San Diego communities of Del Cerro,  San Carlos and Allied Gardens in recent months, among other neighborhoods targeted. Some flyers blamed Jews for 9-11 attacks, among other false claims.

November 30, 2023 (Lakeside) – A Lakeside man who suffered permanent injuries from being shot 16 times has filed a lawsuit against San Diego County and two Sheriff’s deputies who opened fire. 

The civil lawsuit filed by Erik Talavera alleges that deputies David Lovejoy and Jonathan Young gave conflicting commands and used excessive force and negligence during the incident in El Cajon on Feb.16, 2022. The deputies were cleared of criminal wrongdoing following an investigation by the District Attorney.

WOMAN, 21, ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING OF INFANT IN SANTEE

November 21, 2023 (Santee) -- A woman has been arrested in connection with the attempted kidnapping of a child in Santee.

On Monday, November 20 just before 6 p.m., a woman tried to remove a one-year-old child from a shopping cart in the 100 block of Town Center Parkway. The suspect was not successful, since the child was secured in the cart with a lap belt. She then took off on foot heading south toward Mission Gorge Road. Despite a thorough search of the area by Sheriff's Deputies and a Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter, the suspect was not located.

Detectives from the Santee Sheriff's Station immediately began investigating the incident. On Tuesday, November 21 around 7:30 p.m., detectives arrested Isela Ortega, 21,  in the 400 block of Orsett Street in Chula Vista.

ATTEMPTED INFANT KIDNAPPING IN SANTEE: SHERIFF SEEKS TIPS TO FIND FEMALE SUSPECT

November 21, 2023 (Santee) -- The Santee Sheriff's Station is investigating the attempted kidnapping of a child  on Monday, November 20 shortly before 6:00 p.m. in the 100 block of Town Center Parkwayin Santee. The parents of a one-year-old called 9-1-1 to report that a woman tried to remove their child from their shopping cart as they were walking to their car. The suspect attempted to take the child from the cart several times, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department.
 
However, the child was safely secured with a lap belt. The suspect fled the scene on foot when the parents called 9-1-1. The child was not hurt. Deputies from the Santee Sheriff's Station and a Sheriff's ASTREA helicopter immediately responded to the scene. They searched the area for the suspect, but she was not located.

ARMED SUSPECT SHOT BY SDPD OFFICER IN CITY HEIGHTS DIES IN HOSPITAL

November 21, 2023 (San Diego) – Imanol Aparicio, suspected of injuring a woman in City Heights on November 13, has died in a hospital after being shot by San Diego Police officers.

SDPD officers responded to a report of a shooting around 11 p.m. in the 4500 block of Polk Avenue and found a woman with a minor wound to her forehead. The suspect had fled the scene, but was located nearby in the 4000 block of Wightman Street.

“Officers identified themselves and gave the suspect multiple commands, including to take his hands out of his pockets. The suspect said, `Go for it’ and ran while reaching in his waistband. Officers told him to stop but he did not comply,”says Lieutenant Joseph Janjura with the Sheriff’s homicide unit.  According to Lt. Janjura,  the suspect turned towards the officers while continuing to reach and manipulate something in his waistband. Officers gave the suspect multiple warnings and commands.

FLOCK LICENSE PLATE READER LEADS TO ARRESTS FOR DOUBLE MURDER AT HOUSE PARTY IN EL CAJON

November 21, 2023 (El Cajon) – Two suspects have been arrested for the fatal shootings of two teens on October 28 at a house party in the 700 block of Mahogany Drive in El Cajon. Thanks to the city’s new Flock Safety automated license plate readers, El Cajon Police detectives were able to identify the getaway vehicle used in the crime, according to Lieutenent. Will Guerin.

ECPD officers responded to a series of 911 calls reporting a loud house party and multiple gunshots shortly before midnight on Oct. 28.  Arriving officers saw numerous people fleeing the area and found two male shooting victims, ages 16 and 18. Both were critically wounded.  Despite swift medical attention, both victims died of their injuries after being transported to local trauma hospitals.

Two suspects, 21-year-old Bruce Luu and 24-year-old Dan Nalab, both city of San Diego residents, were identified. Nalab was taken into custody on Nov.19 by the Chula Vista Police Department for an unrelated firearm charge.  On Nov.20, with the assistance of the US Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force and the East County Regional Gang Task Force, El Cajon Police officers and detectives apprehended Bruce Luu in San Diego.

MAN ARRESTED FOR MURDERING HIS MOTHER IN BORREGO SPRINGS

Update November 21, 2023: The victim has been identified as Leona Guevara, 63.

November 19, 2023 (Borrego Springs) – Jacob Guevara, 41, is under arrest for the murder of his mother.

The victim’s daughter had requested a welfare check on her mother, 63, due to living conditions in  her residence, according to the Lieutenant Joseph Jarjura with the San Diego County Sheriff’s department.

November 19, 2023 (Spring Valley)—Detectives with the Rancho San Diego Sheriff's Station are asking for public help to identify the suspect or suspects responsible for shooting and injuring five people last night,including one in serious conditoin.  

Witnesses told deputies that a birthday party was being held at a home in the 9000 block of Ildica Street around 8 p.m. when they suddenly heard gunshots.Deputies from the Rancho San Diego, Santee and Alpine Sheriff's Stations, as well as Lemon Grove, Lakeside and Imperial Beach Sheriff's Substations responded and found a frantic scene.

MASS SHOOTING IN SPRING VALLEY

November 19, 2023 (Spring Valley) – Five people were taken to a hospital last night with gunshot injuries after being shot in the backyard of a home in the  9000 block of Ildica Street in Spring Valley.  Two children were also injured, suffering burns that authorities believe were caused by the shooter throwing fireworks to mask the sounds of gunshots.

The dead-end street was cordoned off last night while authorities searched for a male suspect, who remains at large. No description was provided by authorities; scanner traffic indicated the suspect was wearing black clothing.

November 14, 2023 (San Diego’s East County) -- San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the San Diego Fugitive Task Force seek public help to track down a kidnapping and auto theft suspect. David Edward Wallace, 30, is wanted on a felony warrant and is known to frequent Spring Valley and Bonita, as well as Imperial Beach.

A $1,000 reward is offered to information leading to his arrest. Wallace is 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds, and has brown hair and blue eyes.

BORDER PATROL ARRESTS SEX OFFENDER, A FORMER POLICE OFFICER, FOR SMUGGLING PEOPLE IN CAMPO

November 12, 2023 (Campo, CA) – A former Los Angeles Police Department officer convicted of rape was arrested by Border Patrol agents on November 6 in Campo for human smuggling. The convicted felon was also in possession of a ghost gun.

A local resident reported seeing human smuggling near the border involving an older model SUV. A agent responded and found a vehicle matching the description. The driver told the agent that he was an LAPD lieutenant and presented what appeared to be an LAPD badge, according to a press release from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Department’s San Diego sector.

The agent saw four people in the back seat of the SUV and conducted an immigration inspection. The individuals, three women and a man, told the agent that they had recently crossed the U.S./ Mexico border illegally. The agent placed the driver and passengers under arrest and transported them to a nearby Border Patrol station.

ARREST MADE IN RAMONA SHOOTING DEATH

November 5, 2023 (Ramona) – Sean Hawksworth of Ramona, 24, has been arrested for the murder of Eduardo Aguilar Alba, 26. Alba was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head on October 20, inside his Ramona home in the 400 block of 16th Street.

Deputies responded to a call reporting the death. The Medical Examiner concluded the  manner of death was homicide.

After homicide detectives determined that Hawksworth was the suspect, the Sheriff’s department obtained a search warrant of his home. On November 3 at 2:30 a.m.,  Hawksworth was arrested.  He has been charged with murder and has been booked into San Diego Central Jail, says Lieutenant Joseph Janjura.

BORDER PATROL SEIZES NEARLY $10 MILLION IN NARCOTICS

November 4, 2023 (San Diego) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers from the San Diego Field Office this past weekend seized nearly $10 million worth of dangerous drugs including fentanyl at the San Ysidro, Tecate and Otay Mesa ports of entry.

TWO DEAD IN SUSPECTED GANG SHOOTING AFTER PARTY IN EL CAJON

October 29, 2023 (El Cajon) – Two teens have died after being shot by an assailant outside a house party in El Cajon last night.

Shortly before midnight,  El Cajon Police officers responded to a series of 9-1-1 calls reporting a loud house party and multiple gunshots in the 700 block of Mahogany Drive.

“Upon arrival, officers saw numerous people fleeing from the area.  Tragically, two victims, a 16-year-old male, and an 18-year-old male were found critically wounded, one in the street and the other in the front yard of a residence,” says Lieutenant Will Guerin.  “Despite swift medical attention, both victims succumbed to their injuries after being transported to local trauma hospitals.”
