October 13, 2011 (San Diego) -Today, The California Endowment announced the first six ‘Health Happens Heroes’ award recipients honoring school food and nutrition directors from across the state who are pioneers in making healthier school meals that kids want to eat. The awards coincide with National School Lunch Week (Oct 10-14), a time to raise awareness about how healthy school meals contribute to the well-being and academic achievement of children.
The California Endowment praised the work ofGARY PETILL, Nutrition Services Director for the San Diego Unified School District, for working to improve healthy eating habits by offering more fruits and vegetables and implementing lunchroom salad bars featuring local and organic produce in every K-12 school in the district.

October 11, 2011 (Poway) – Chaparral Elementary School in Poway has sent a warning letter to parents advising that the Sheriff’s Department reported that a mountain lion, also known as a cougar, had been seen in the neighborhood this morning.

Parent Association honored as statewide winner in 2011 Spotlight Awards
October 9, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Last week, the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Executive Director, Kenny Rogers visited Northmont Elementary School in La Mesa to honor Northmont Elementary PTA for their efforts helping children get physically active and healthy.
Rogers presented the school with a check for $10,000 in honor of the PTA, which is the Gold Medal winner in the Parent Association of the Year category of the Council’s 2011 Spotlight Awards presented by the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation.

October 9, 2011 (San Diego) -- San Diego State University (SDSU) has received a joint grant of $1.67 million for its Jobs Accelerator program from the Economic Development Administration (EDA), the Small Business Administration and the Employment Training Administration (ETA).
“Our number one priority is job creation,” said Congressman Bob Filner (D-San Diego), in announcing the award. “Our region has been in dire need of this type of investment in our economy and our students. In a time when school and local budgets are being cut to the bone, this grant will go a long way to creating the good paying jobs we need, training the workforce, and help us move into a new green energy economy.”

October 8, 2011 (San Diego) -- Trauma Intervention Programs (TIP) of San Diego County, Inc. is a non-profit organization that partners with emergency responders to assist residents in crisis following a personal tragedy, such as the sudden death of a loved one. TIP is currently seeking volunteers to respond to the East County and National City areas to offer support services to residents.
Volunteers are called to the scene by police, fire, and sheriff and are trained to help fellow citizens who are in distress as a result of a traumatic event. Volunteers respond within their community. The first few hours after a traumatic event has occurred are very confusing for everyone involved and the TIP volunteers are trained to provide the necessary emotional first aid and other temporary support until the persons involved in the crisis are able to depend on family, friends, and others.

September 6, 2011 (El Cajon)--Grossmont College students and President Sunny Cooke (far left) remembered the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks by planting an olive tree on campus. Before the tree was planted, students wrote their thoughts and feelings on small cards and then tied the cards with ribbon to the branches of the tree. The students wrote about such topics as bravery, resilience, faith and freedom inspired by the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and Flight 93.

The Foundation for Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges continues the work of the two separate foundations at Grossmont College and Cuyamaca College to raise money for scholarships, facilities and college programs.

September 4, 2011 (San Diego County) -- It’s that time of year again when moms, dads and school kids are looking to stock up on school and office supplies at a bargain price. Shoppers should be alert when paying for these bargains to make sure they are actually getting the lowest advertised prices.
From July 2010 to June 2011, inspectors from the County’s Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures (AMW) scanned more than 26,000 items at 1,600 retail stores and found 25 percent of the stores had pricing errors. Inspections showed that overcharges variedwith the type of store.

The tree planting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 at a lawn area adjacent to building #53.
